Since it is the silly season, after all the hoopla about the Big 12 getting left out of the playoff, should they be left out again for the next two seasons, and the move to four 16 team super conferences emerges...I took a crack at what my version would look like. Interested in the ideas of others.

There are 64 teams in the power five conferences. Interestingly only five of these teams are outside the top 64 in attendance, Vandy(65), BC(71), WSU(76), Wake(78), and Duke(80). The five that replace them are, Notre Dame(16), BYU(28), East Carolina(54), UCF(58), and Fresno(64). I decided to drop ECU, UCF, Fresno, Wake, and Duke from my top 64.

This then becomes, unsurprisingly, a two part process, 1) undo bad realignment that's already happened and 2) reassign the teams in the Big 12.

I sought to balance conference history, geography, and time zones, first, and competitive balance second. there is so much talent in the deep south that anything else results in national conferences. This means that Texas and Florida are split and that the SOUTH conference is a beast. Here is the result summarized first by existing conference.

Pac 12 - All teams become part of WEST conference.
ACC - All teams become part of EAST conference.
Big Ten - All teams become part of MIDWEST conference except for Penn State, Rutgers, and Maryland who move to the EAST conference.
SEC - All teams become part of the SOUTH conference except for Missouri who joins the MIDWEST conference
BYU - Joins the WEST conference
Notre Dame - Joins the MIDWEST conference
Big 12 - West Virginia joins the EAST, Iowa State, Kansas, and Kansas State join the MIDWEST, Texas, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State join the SOUTH, and Texas Tech, Baylor, and TCU join the WEST conference.

Here is the full list. Have at it!!

One simple tweak in favor of geography and rivalries that I left out, swap South Carolina and Ga. Tech. This would reverse a historical move by each team (Ga. Tech was SEC, SC was ACC), and would make an OOC rivalry game a divisional game freeing up the schedules.

What you are saying: All conferences are to disbanded and 4 new "conferences" are to be made just so we can have a 4 team playoff at the end of the year.
NO THANKS!!!

Yep, that is the proposal. I'm not a huge fan of it, but it is interesting.

i fear this day is coming, and i think the list in the op is pretty spot on, at least as it relates to the midwest.

It's logical, if you extend it to 8 team divisions, 7 division games, 3 crossover and 2 OOC games. You would have a conference championship game then the 4 team playoff. The problem is that logic doesn't leave room for egos which means there is little chance that it would come about.

So uhhhh. What happens to the other teams in the non power 5? Only way this happens is if you expand the playoff to 12 teams (major conferences will bitch that their top 2 deserve to be in, especially the south, because they're conference is the best and they'd beat all the other conferences best).
If you only went to 8, there isn't room for the non power 5.
I actually kind of like this format if you go to 12. Each of the power 4 gets it's top 2 teams in based on whatever criteria they choose to have. Conference champ from power 4 gets a bye and are ranked 1-4. the other 4 and the next 4 best teams as selected by a selection committee (enables the non power 4 to actually play for the prize) are seeded 1-8 (or 5-12 if you please). They play their "play in" game at home sites to reduce travel burden. Then we have 8 teams left over 3 weeks with the opening round at home sites then the final 2 rounds played at your major bowl sites as is done now.

The non power 5 have their own system. The top 64 may very well leave the NCAA. Which means Duke is in for basketball reasons.

How long till they expand it to 65, and later play-in teams.?

Sorry, couldn't resist.:cool02:

if all the conferences coordinate to the extent that it would take to make that happen it would be a pretty clear case of collusion to me.
