I had the pleasure to talk to the Coordinating producer of BTN Originals, Bill Friedman, this evening. He is the mastermind behind the Big Ten Network's, The Journey, and if you are one of the rare Gopher fans that hasn't seen this show, you are missing out. I really think it's one of the best shows on TV, if not the best. This week they are doing a piece on the relationship between Jerry Kill and Ra'Shede Hageman. Here's a preview: http://btn.com/2013/11/26/journey-details-hageman-kill-bond/
NB: You just featured Ra'Shede Hageman on The Journey a few weeks ago, why did you decide to do another piece?
BF: One of the things we like to do on The Journey is have characters that make multiple appearances, because then you really get to know their story and see them grow. When we went out and did the stuff on Ra'Shede, we found him to be a compelling character. Here's someone that is a really engaging young man, with a unique background. We went up again this weekend for senior day, and his parents were a big part of the 1st story we did. Coach Kill is such a big part of his story as well , he helped alter Ra'Shede's attitude and he's is extremely candid and told some great stories about Coach Kill.
NB : What kind of things did Ra'Shede tell you about Jerry Kill?
BF: There's a great anecdote in the show about how one dayRa'Shede was tired and didn't feel like going to study hall and went home, and sure enough there was a knock on his door and it was Coach Kill. He was worried if he apartment was clean enough for Coach, and Kill told him he wasn't staying and brought him back to study hall. Coach understood his past, and that that's always going to be there for him. He's been with a few different families growing up. There was a great moment in our 1st show, the locker room celebration with Coach Kill and Ra'Shede after the Nebraska win. It was one of my favorite shots that we got all season, not only that they won the game, but made a difference in each other's lives.
NB: What did Jerry Kill tell you about Ra'Shede?
BF: Ra'Shede is a guy that's had to make some changes. You'll hear that he says you're not judged on your wins and losses, but you're judged on what you do with kids and he feels a sense of accomplishment on Ra'Shede's development.
Be sure to set your DVR's or watch The Journey tomorrow night (Wednesday) at 6pm CST, it will also re-air that night at 8:30pm, and on Thursday at 8:30am and 12:30pm.
The Basketball Journey is right around the corner too - will start on January 12th!
