Rankings: 3/4/13

I've been thinking about this as well, and it's hard to say. Obviously beating #1 Indiana should be a huge boost in national perception, at least as far as making the nation aware of us again, but we didn't even receive votes this past week. Teams on the outer edge of the rankings that lost this week that I can think of are #19 Memphis, #20 Butler (by 30 something to VCU), and #21 Notre Dame. I'm pretty sure Wisconsin did not get into the top 25 immediately after their road win at then #2 Indiana, but I think they also lost @ Iowa later that same week. So I'd guess we'll be no higher than #22 or so, and I wouldn't be surprised if we are still unranked. Hopefully we'll at least be on the higher end of the teams receiving votes.

I think we get in. I have nothing to state my case, but I think we are high 20s.

I hope not. I like being unranked, it seems like we play better when we aren't expected to blow out every team we face.

Will get votes, but I'll say no, if we sweep Nebraska and Purdue we will be ranked going into the postseason.

Agree with this as well. I think we'll be close - 26th/27th/28th in votes - but will need to sweep the rest of the way to get in.

They should receive votes, but they had a lot of teams to pass up.

What is interesting is the AP poll usually has a high correlation with seeding for the tournament. If the Gophers do get ranked by NCAA selection time, Gophers would be looking at that #4 - 6 seed.
Gophers stick out like a sore thumb with that high RPI. If they win their last two, their RPI ranking will be right about #13 so that will be hard to ignore in the seeding too long.

Lunardi has Gophers as a #10 seed which I really believe is low. That things that seemed to move teams up higher than expected last year was notable victories (wins over top 25 teams). Gophers have that right now.

I agree with this. I think we'll be toward the top of the "others receiving votes" list, but priority #1 is sweeping the rest of the regular season to get a decent seed in the BTT. Is our upper-bound 6th place?

If we win out (@Nebraska, @Purdue), and Michigan loses out (Michigan State, @Purdue, Indiana), we would be tied for 5th, but would still end up with a 6 seed in the tourney because Michigan is 1-0 against us this year, in fact if Illinois wins out (@Iowa, @Ohio State), we could finish in a three way tie for 5th in the Big Ten, but get a 7 seed in the Big Ten tournament. I'm feeling like a 7 seed means we play Michigan State in the second round, a 6 seed (seems most likely to me) would mean Wisconsin. I could go for another shot at Wisconsin.

Thanks for the info. I definitely like how we match up against Wisconsin much better than MSU.

1st of all, Lunardi is a tool. He purposely makes idiotic projections to get fans riled up and posting criticisms and comments on their discussion boards. Brings in more advertising dollars. Best to ignore the mainstream brackets at ESPN or CBS and instead look at the ones that are not at sites that are advertiser driven.

I'm a stats guy and getting into the Top 25, even if its only #25, long term is another feather in the cap. Everything that like helps in the long term.

In the short term, I also think it helps for us NOT to be in the rankings, give the boys that little something more to strive for, to win and get back into the polls. Although, moving up to say, #22 this week, would give up an advantage if we keep winning and more teams ahead of us lose, maybe we could pull off a #4/5 seed? Honestly, I'd actually rather get a #6 seed. Who wants to face a #1 seed in the Sweet 16 when you can get a #2 seed. Little tougher matchup in the 2nd round maybe, but I'm about dreaming big, Elite 8 or better, vs dreaming little, 2nd round or maybe Sweet 16.

In addition to 6 being the ceiling, I think we should expect to get there. We play two teams in the bottom third of the conference (albeit on the road), so we should be able to get to get to 10-8 (assuming that we show up for every game, I don't think that either Purdue or Nebraska is close to being able to beat the team we put on the floor against Indiana, obviously we can't take it for granted, because either of those teams could beat the team we put on the court against OSU). If we get those, Iowa can't catch us, and Illinois would have to win out (where they would get the tiebreaker), but I don't envision them winning at Iowa and at OSU.

I think we are ranked. The only blemish on our resume is conference record and we are back to .500, not to mention we knocked off the #1 team in the country and blew out Penn State who just beat Michigan. We have a top 15 or so RPI, a lot of top 100 wins, at least 5 or 6 top 50 wins. Put us in! I'd love to end the year in the top 25 for the first time ever in Tubby's tenure.

This. Now add in the facts that voters don't see most games played but can't help but see the highlights of those two victories and how the Gophers are ranked second in the country in strength of schedule rpi. That should get them back in the Top 25. That's if the voters wipe out what happened in the previous two games.

Chalk up Wisconsin as another ranked team losing. Down 13 at home to Purdue, 20 seconds left, Sconny can't hit anything. Lol Purdue outscores Wisconsin 50-24 in last 27:50 of the game, reminds me of our loss at Iowa, Purdue turns a 13 point deficit into a 13 point win.

FWIW Seth Davis tweeted out his top 25 and left the Gophers out, then responded to someone's question saying he has us at 25A. just too many losses for him to rank us. He wonders if the Indiana game was a fluke.

You may be right but we will be ranked tomorrow. I am guessing 24 in Coaches poll and 21 in the AP.

I'll say 27 tomorrow, 23 next week after two more wins.

As mentioned, after not receiving any votes, it's hard to imagine we'd get in there from one good win this week. We'd need some pretty bad losses from the lower ranked teams and a bad week for the teams that were on the bubble.

I think if you beat the number one team, you should automatically replace them in the polls, but that's probably just me.
