Randy Shannon's Story

"...in the behavior contract each University of Miami players sign before the season: no guns.

If you're found with a gun, you're off the team, the contract states. No excuses. No exceptions. No waiting for some trial to conclude months later.

"I'll just say, 'Here's your papers,'" Miami coach Randy Shannon says.

I wonder how that contract will play with some Minnesota kid dressed in blaze orange?

I have to admit I think I kind of like this guy.

Pat Tingelhoff would have probably had trouble playing for him. As I recall, Pat was the avid hunter who was reprimanded (perhaps tossed out) by dorm staff for using his room to skin animals he had hunted. I might be wrong on that, but I think it was Tingelhoff.

While not in my top-5, I would be very supportive of a Shannon hire.

Yep, count me in as Shannon being a positive hire.

Coming from Coker's program, only ONE of Shannon's players was arrested during his tenure and he ranked third in Academic Progress rate in all Division I schools, behind only Air Force and Navy. (That basically means that his student athletes actually graduated. Source: http://hurricanesports.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/080510aal.html)

There was a reason why many coaches declined Miami job after Coker left. Shannon came in and cleaned up a program that was littered with the guys who caused an on-field riot at FAU. They are no longer "Thug U," and that is to be commended. Look at Urban Meyer and Florida - he played a guy this season AFTER he threatened to kill someone. (I believe Meyer has claim to this year's Fullmer Cup.)

Did Shannon bring them all the way back to the top of the BCS? No. But it's hard to do that overnight. As I said earlier, if Miami has a coach like Jon Gruden waiting to come aboard, it's hard to pass that up. But if Miami doesn't already have a top tier guy in mind, they are going to regret giving up on Shannon so easily.

I don't know Minnesota is the place where he proves that he can coach, but I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up a good coach for a BCS program someday. I think he should be a defensive coordinator for someone for a year or two, let the Miami stuff simmer and then grab a good job in the south, where he has contacts and recruiting in-roads.
