Rakeem Buckles, who tried to transfer to Minnesota from Florida International to follow head coach Richard Pitino, is having an outstanding senior season. He leads Conference USA in rebounding with 10.5 boards per game and is fourth in blocked shots (1.7). He is adding 14.3 points per game. Buckles has scored in double figures in 12 of 15 games and has double figure rebounding efforts nine times this season.

Buckles would have been an excellent addition for the Gophers, who are thin in the frontcourt.

I think we can stop with the Buckles updates. We all know he would of been a huge addition. Oh well, that's the NCAA for you.

Not sure what the point of these threads are anymore. They aren't interesting, they're depressing.

Point of this? I find it interesting...by all rights Buckles should be playing here, and I'm curious how his season plays out as well as ours. Also mildly interested in how FIU does in the season after Pitino, although they seem to have gone in the tank after their PG strangely was declared ineligible about 5 or 6 games into the season, for missing the deadline to cancel draft entry 2 years ago (before a redshirt season)!

Buckles update as of today: still leads the team with 9.3 rebounds per game, second on the team in scoring. But struggling in CUSA conference games:

6 pts, 2 rebounds before fouling out in 17 minutes in win vs Rice.
7 pts, 4 rebounds, 0 assists, 5 turnovers in blowout loss to La Tech.
7 pts, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 5 turnovers in loss to Old Dominion.

BTN had a round table discussion about the inconsistency of transfers. It really is an NCAA problem. There is no reason he should not be here based on the criteria for why other players transferred. They need to come up with ONE criteria for transferring and allow anyone who wants to do so. Most of the panel agree, it should just be a one semester sit for any transfer and let them play after Christmas.

King is not a B1G player, it's too bad Pitino took over a team with such lackluster players at the 4 spot and we'll have him on the another 2.5yrs.

King is going to be a great role player off the bench for us. He is most definitely a B1G player. He has proven this many times already.

I agree, but last night he got bitched at by Pitino pretty much every offensive trip up the floor for some mistake he made on defense.

And I agree with Wandering, I am interested in Buckles updates.

He will continue to improve as most players do.

Just look at the game thread about everyone who thought EE would never be a B1G caliber player.

He is getting meaningful minutes as a sophomore. Plenty of time to continue improving and get even better.

King flashes signs once in a while that lead me to believe that he'll be fine the next 2 years, but... he's been horrendous in some of the games. He's gotta start defending the three better. He's given up about 8 threes already this big ten season on defense. He also needs to protect the ball better and get in the weight room. If he works on this, he can be a fine B1G player as an upperclassmen!

The way it should've worked out is that Buckles should be starting, with Oto backing him up and King sitting out the year to get stronger (personally I think all of these medical waivers should have to wait like everyone else, but even if he had the option to play, we wouldn't need him this year if we had Buckles). I think King definitely will be a good player for us as an upperclassman, hopefully as a scoring spark off the bench. Just needs to get stronger and more used to B1G play.

I don't think King would have redshirted with Buckles on board. Pitino knows he'll be recruiting better power forwards than King down the line. Thus there would be no reason to delay his graduation.

Who is coaching our bigs? Something really clicked with Eliason and Oto is much better than expected. Mo is going to come around. I think King is going to be very good down the road when he is familiar/comfortable in Pitino's style of play and puts on some muscle. And what about this new kids coming in? Wowee!!!

That was my point when I said he was not a B1G player, he is not the kind of guy Pitino wants to be bringing in in the future, but under the circumstances it was a great opportunity for King to be a gopher and play in the Big Ten.

I should be more concerned about Buggs, but King's game bothers me.

That in bold, mainly, IMO. Just not strong enough and can be too loose with the ball (perhaps due to physical strength differentials).

Talking about Buggs, what's going on there?

Buckles leads FIU over UAB 78-73

Associated Press

Feb. 6
MIAMI -- Rakeem Buckles had 21 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks to lead Florida International past UAB, 78-73 Thursday night.
FIU snapped a two-game losing skid while winning its third straight at home. Buckles had his 10th double-double of the season.
Down 60-56 with about 5 minutes to play, Buckles' tip sparked a 13-2 run to give the Panthers a 69-62 lead with 2:24 remaining. C.J. Washington hit a 3-poointer to pull UAB to 69-65. Jerome Fink and Tymell Murphy both scored, and FIU made five of six free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
