Just pieced together a quick preview and prediction for the MTSU game. Trying to do this again this year for every game on GEGH. Readers or no - its both educational and cathartic (after losses) for me to do game preview and 'What have we learned' bits. Plus I just like writing. If you think it sucks tell me - I have thicker skin than most.

I love what MV on FBT is doing, so I'm trying to be complementary to his terrific hardcore coverage and analysis with a more personal and humorous angle, especially from attending games in person and occasional road games (heck, even the NCAA Tourney for hoops last year). I also like to get as many of my own photos from games out there as I can, so if nothing else the photography will be fresh.

Their mascot is an angry My Little Pony.

There's lots of little things that go together to interpret our mascot. Most MT fans hate it, but it has a cool little story.
1. It's a TN Walking Horse because Murfreesboro is close to the TN Walking Horse capitol of the world and it's Tennessee's horse.
2. It has wings because of our Aerospace Program which is Nationally Ranked and is very impressive.
3. It has lightning out of it's mouth because it represents how fast the school has grown and how Murfreesboro is growing rapidly and expanding.

There's a lot that goes into it but MT fans still want it changed. Plus, I'm not trying to be rude but you guys are the Gophers. That's not too impressive either. I think the worst I've ever heard though is about my 2 best friends' mascot in high school. They were the Beavers and their opponents used to bring signs that said "Shave the Beavers!" Awful...

Well, of course it's a walking horse. The mascot walks around, after all. :D

It does seem a little odd to highlight on particular program. Maybe it could have rainbows for the department of meteorology. And one horn for the ag department. And sparkles for the art department.

3. It has lightning out of it's mouth because it represents how fast the school has grown and how Murfreesboro is growing rapidly and expanding.

You don't want lightning coming out of its mouth, you want laser beams coming out of its eyes. Because that would be cool.

Plus, I'm not trying to be rude but you guys are the Gophers. That's not too impressive either.

Glass houses and all that, huh? Well, if people are going to be throwing stones anyway, why should I refrain from throwing stones? Besides, Goldy Gopher is cool. They tried to make him a mean looking Gopher, but that made him just look like every other mascot.

The Beaver is a pretty common mascot. Bemidji State University's mascot is the Beaver. There used to be a beauty salon called the "Beaver Look Salon". It's sign said that it was a Full Service salon. For some reason, they changed the name.

Then there are the Awesome Blossoms of Blooming Prairie High School...

Correct; you want the lightning bolts to shoot from it's arse!!;)

Nice read on the blog; keep up the good work!

Well shucks - I think that is pretty cool (all the details about the MTSU mascot/logo). Sorry to hear people still want it changed. But does this winged horsey have a name?

Oh, and we're not just the 'Gophers' either - that's GOLDEN GOPHERS to you. Amps up the classiness quotient.

Our nickname has been around longer a good 50 years longer than MTSU, so please a little respect. The history is as follows:
"The Gopher mascot is a tradition as old as the state. Minnesota was tabbed the “Gopher State” in 1857 after a satirizing cartoon, depicting nine Gophers with the heads of local politicians pulling a locomotive, was published.[1] The story was over legislative action for a $5 million railroad proposal in western Minnesota. Later, the University picked up the nickname."

"The “Golden” adjective has not always been a part of the Gopher nickname. During the 1930s, the Gophers wore gold jerseys and pants. Legendary KSTP radio announcer Halsey Hall coined the term “Golden Gophers” in reference to the team’s all-gold attire on the field. From 1932 through 1941, Minnesota compiled an impressive record, losing only 12 games and winning seven Big Ten titles and five national championships—a true “golden” decade of Gopher football."

And please, don't lump us in with Beavers. Gophers and Beavers are VERY different.

The MTSU mascot's name is Lightning. I didn't compare you to Beavers. I just said that the Beaver is the worst mascot, IMO.

I don't know though...I can't believe there is a school with Awesome Blossoms as a mascot. That's unbelievable. I mean, do they just want people to laugh at them???

My sister is a California "Valley Girl", Burbank born and raised. For years now she's lived in Santa Cruz. The University's nickname? The Banana Slugs and yeah, the students chose it and yeah, they want people to laugh at it..

NDSU had a homecoming shirt in the early- to mid-90s saying "We licked the Beavers, now we're going back for Moorhead" (in reference to BSU and MSU).
Best shirt and slogan I have ever seen.

HAHA. Awesome! And to the post before, I've been to Santa Cruz. It's like those people live in another world out there. Definitely different, but it's a gorgeous place to visit!

I think the school's mascot should be the same as the nickname. Stanford nickname is the Cardinal, while their mascot is a Tree. I don't know what Western Kentucky's is supposed to be. It's like a muppet that has been the victim of severe and illegal medical experiements. Penn State's lion reminds me of Snagglepuss.

I can respect the Awesome Blossoms though. It reminds me of Carl Eller, who played for the Gophers and the Minnesota Vikings, and is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame and the NFL Hall of Fame. He had a light red suit. To anyone else it was pink. But no one was going to laugh at him for wearing a pink suit. I respect any school that has the guts to call themselves the Awesome Blossoms. If you can stand up to people and say "We're the Awesom Blossoms, got a problem with that?" people stop laughing.

I didn't say it was the bird, and yes, it's difficult to make a mascot out of a color. But they could have at least pick something that was red.

It was more of a comment than a correction. I agree the tree is strange. Actually Stanford should have taken Western Kentucky's mascot and we'd all be happy. Just call him big Cardinal.

I like Goldy Gopher because the guy is clearly the old fashioned college gent we'd like to be. What with his classy sweater and rakish grin. He knows that even if he loses he's still got more swank than you.

All these charging equines, hostile birds of prey and angry apex predators lack Goldy's sly dignity.

And anyway, did you guys know that a buckeye is a type of flowering tree?

Western Kentucky's mascot is supposed to be "the spirit of WKU." How you get that out of a massive red blob...I have no idea. Plus, WKU's mascot terrifies me. At games, he grabs his big blob belly and shakes it. It's just not right!

Hey Buddy, watch it

Big Red sends me a Birthday card and a Christmas card every year... What has your little horse done for you.

Besides, if you are uncomfortable with Big Red grabbing and shaking his belly, that really says more about you than about him.

Goldy is one of the greatest mascots in the country. Any school can have a carnivorous animal or a generic warrior mascot, but a Gopher is different. Gophers are sly. Goldy will screw around with your head (ask that Penn state 'pl(r?)ayer' from last year) , casually beat you in bocce ball, and when Goldy does his thing on saturdays, I'm always half expecting him to steal someone's gf during time outs.

You think a Wolverine, Hawkeye, or Badger has that kind of charisma? no chance.

Then there's Bucky Beaver, Bemidji State's mascot, who looks amazingly like Bucky Badger. Wisconsin must have ripped them off.

The MTSU players ride in on this in celebration of their mascot.

My horse gave me a scholarship for 4 years, won a few football games, sent me to 2 bowls, and let me have a blast all while doing it. WKU though...I didn't say I don't like the school. Just don't like the mascot. They could have picked something better. And I don't think it really says anything about me that I don't like the way he grabs and shakes his belly. Most opposing fans think that is really odd. To be honest, I'm just hoping WKU wins at least 1 game this year. And it would be great if that win was against Troy.

Dance4.

Do you know if MTSU is scheduled to play UT vols in football in the near future?
