Question with MN vs Iowa

Hey, so I've never been down to Iowa City for the Gophers game vs those creatures they call hawkeyes but I'm finally making the venture down there this year. I was wondering if anyone that has been down there could answer some myths about Iowa City that I've heard and answer questions.
1) I've heard if you're wearing Gopher colors, you'll likely not be allowed into bars following the game.
2) Any suggestions for lots for tailgating (hopefully with more MN fans than Iowa)
3) Places to stay? eat?
 

The Sheraton downtown is probably the best if you want to be around the bars, campus, and the walk to the stadium. But it's always a bit pricey on game days, Coaralville is closer the freeway and more options. You could feasibly walk to the stadium, but it's a bit of a hike.

I've never heard for anyone blocking fans from going into their establishment.
 

We always park at the University golf course; Finkbine (?) where there is ample space. Its about a mile or less walk to Kinnick. Expect some flak from students as you get closer to the stadium. There are usually a good number of Gopher fans who park and gate there.

Some take the train from Coralville which drops you off on the west side of the stadium. We may try that this year.

You sound like you know what is what in regard to traveling to away games. Answer me this please. How would you rank the following away experiences: Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska. Thanks.

A group of us are going for the first time this year and we are staying in Coaralville for the game. Really looking forward to it!

Not Bayfieldgopoher, but having been to all places, I'd rank them:

1. Nebraska
2. Michigan
3. Iowa

I think they're all reasonably good trips - would rank these three slightly above Indiana, above Wisconsin, above Northwestern, and wayyyy above Purdue. I put Iowa third because I feel like Lincoln and Ann Arbor have more going on outside of the game in the way of restaurants and bars, for Friday night/Saturday night fun.

Not really as we have only been to Wisky, Iowa, NU and Nebraska. Never been to Michigan but its on my list.

IMO, Nebraska is hard to beat as the fans there treat visitors very well. Plus the bar scene is near to the stadium which is close to downtown. Iowa is OK and I think the home crowd is better managed than the obnoxious Iowaegians who have frequented the damn dome and now TCF. Wisky has the worst home fans, hands down and Nebraska the best.

Thanks, and thanks to Gopher07, for the info. Trying to figure out which one comes next. I've always heard great things about the Nebraska trip.

Going to Oregon State for the next non-conference game/2017.
 



Iowa fans are rude, boorish, and clueless. Wisconsin fans have recently passed them by. Iowa City has by far been the worst roadtrip.

Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son.

My rankings, among B1G roadies I've made:

1. Nebraska
2. Michigan State
3. Iowa
4. Wisconsin
5. Michigan
6. Northwestern
7. Purdue

Rankings include: gameday atmosphere, stadium, bar scene, liveliness of campus, food options, cost, etc.
 

The crowd thinks there is holding on EVERY play. It's like a cheer in Kinnick. Seats are very cramped.

I've been to Madison twice after going last year. And, I would say that the fans were much more subdued before the game this last year than when I went in college back in 2006 (I think?) where me and my friends got beer thrown at us three times walking to the stadium.

This will be my first Iowa City trip.
 

Love road trips to Iowa City, probably my favorite Big Ten trip but Nebraska is right there too. (Trip to OSU will complete my original Big Ten tour).

Stay in Coralville, the walk to/from the stadium is easy and there are a few bars to stop at along the way. Not sure how that will be impacted with a night game.

Easy to cab downtown if you want to head out in Iowa City for the night.

Ditto this. Always a good time for me. We always have a mixed fan group and have fun there
 

I really hope we can get a great crowd down there for this, I imagine it will depend on how Big Ten play goes. A huge Gopher presence, at least selling out our allotment, would be a lot of fun. Does anyone know if the UMAA has done any type of Big Ten tailgates before?
 

When my bro and I went, we'd leave Buffalo around 3-4am, getting into Iowa City around an hour before the game to park, walk a mile to Kinnick and then watch whatever warmups were left. We left Ia the second the game was over, hitting up a Hardees on the way out of town.

Moral of the story, we spent as little time as practical as we could in Iowa. I suggest that ;)
 

I've been to every Big Ten city except for West Lafayette and Piscataway. Ranked just by how much I enjoyed being there including game, nightlife, etc.

1. Nebraska
2. Ohio State
3. Michigan
4. Indiana
5. Michigan State
6. Illinois
7. Wisconsin
8. Northwestern
9. Iowa
10. Maryland
11. Penn State

For those going to Iowa that like craft beer, Backpocket Brewery in Coralville is fantastic (especially the Pennywhistle Wheat) and is a block from two Coralville hotels, the Marriott and the Homewood Suites.

I've been to IC three times, and only packed Gopher clothing. I've never been declined entrance anywhere in the city. 95% of people are cool to deal with. You might get some friendly razzing, but that's about it. You'll come across your typical jerks, but for the most part we've had a pretty good time. If trying to go without spending a large chuck of cash, I'd second what others have said about Coralville. There are some others that have stayed in Cedar Rapids (about 20 miles away), but then it's tougher to experience the campus nightlife and gameday atmosphere. I'm hoping we can pick up a tailgate pass for one of the lots down there.
