Have you ever played or coached any sports?
And if so, what sport and at what level?

Suggestion here, CP...How about asking those questions of the expert criticizers on the GopherHole comment sections?

The problem would be, by being able to remain anonymous, the commenters would lie thru their god damned teeth.

I hope you're not implying they're unqualified to write on sports without playing those sports at a high level. There are a lot of good athletes who are completely uncapable of analyzing the sport and/or coaching.

I'd much rather have quality conversation, technical or non-technical, than limit all writers and posters on this site to people who played.

One of my favorite quotes was given to me at a pickup game "Basketball is a lot like church. A lot of people do it but very people know how to do it."

I don't think Nadine professes to be an expert on the sport, however I think it would be wise for the Star Tribune to actually hire a writer who really knows the sport for analysis. They've mostly hired columnists and journalists and not sport subject matter experts. FBT has the best technical analysis I've seen in sports locally.

Why would I do that? They're not media people.

your theory being if you are in the media but haven't played or coached a sport on any level you are not qualified to talk about it? but if you post on gopherhole and never had played or coached a sport on any level you can talk about it?

must be the reason so many experts on this site.

I by no means think that writers need to have played sports, but when you call out the 3rd assistant who happens to be the head coaches son by saying he is in over his head, you better back it up with something intelligent or you will get ripped. Funny thing is, Saul was doing fine when we had Nolan, but now that he isn't playing, Saul Smith is in over his head?!?!? Get a clue!!!

My bigger beef is about guys like Barreiro and Souhan employed here who don't give a bleep about Gopher athletics or Minnesota sports in general and just want to make it a punchline in their jokes. That's why I have stopped listening and reading to them.

why do you care what the media says about the Gophers or Minnesota sports in general? why does anyone care? it isn't a big deal. you have the right to do what you did and stop reading and listening and they also have the right to say or write what they want. quit crying about it.

nothing but a bunch of whinning on this site about the media in this town. beyond ridiculous.

I'm not crying about anything. I think they are idiots. Why do you care that I think they are idiots? I have the right to say I think they are idiots. Quite whining about the fact I think they are idiots, you're beyond ridiculous!!!

I played basketball and baseball through 9th grade.

Coached 3rd and 4th grade hoops for a year 10 years ago.

Based on the cr=p you write, I'm surprised you have that much experience.

I can vouch for Doogie's skill in basketball. I was an assistant in the league he played in. He could shoot the three very well, and was a decent defender. He had a teammate who was very good in breaking down the defense, and Doogie was very good in taking advantage of the defense getting sucked into the middle.

   Excellent use of sarcasm to help the OP commentor along.

Really? This is your qualifier? Because I know oh so many guys that have played in college and can hardly compose a paragraph analyzing team.

I played basketball all of my life up until my Junior year in High School, I was our best defensive player all through my Optimist Hoops days. I played varsity soccer and tennis all 4 years of high school, was all county-conference in soccer, and our team took 3rd at state in tennis. I too coached 7th and 8th grade hoops as well...and we had a rough season, but it all came together at the end and we took 3rd the Bantam league tourney in Bloomington.

So, go ahead and rip on how unqualified I am to talk about basketball. And when you're finished doing that, please weigh in on what you think the Gopher needed to do to not be 1-7 in the past 8 games...but I'll only listen if you've played in the NBA ;)

GL, excellent explanation. As rrjackIII said to me on another thread: "Illegitimi non carburundum" This is good advice.

Ummm...my original post was actually a legitimate question. In these times when we have so many bloggers and columnists, I think it's not unfair to ask who has done what. My post was not meant as a slam on anyone.

People who think that you have to have played the sport at a high level to discuss it intelligently are far more ignorant than those who attempt to discuss the sport but only have a novice knowledge of it.

Some of the best coaches in the world never played a second of the sport they coach at the collegiate level, or for some of them, even at the high school level.

That is the key. Here on GopherHole several of the posters do not do that, all they do is make stupid name-calling insults, which makes intelligent discussions impossible.

Better than me. I last "played" in 1964 (7th grade) although mostly I sat on the bench. I never coached at any level of anything.

I had a family member who played professional and Olympic basketball from 1996 through 2005 so I was lucky enough to observe the game at the level. But merely observe, nothing else.
