Can you see a stealth bomber? I'd say tell everyone that there was one no matter what...maybe two flew over...

Didn't someone post on here some time ago that it was going to be F-16's or something along those lines? Has the fly-over been confirmed officially by the U of MN, I don't recall it has?

Uggggg I know we are all very excited about the new Stadium and everything that comes with it, but these kinds of questions are really starting to get annoying. Just relax take a deep breath, it will get here soon enough. Who cares what kinds of jet's they use, have you ever been to a fly over that was not awesome?

Worse then my kid at Christmas. . . .

I feel the exact opposite, Gopher4life15. I can't get enough information or read enough discussions about the stadium in general, and espeically 9-12-09. I think the excitement about what's happening with the stadium and the team and program is great and its the main reason I read this board many times per day. We've waited a long, long time for this much excitement and are the only team in the country that is opening a brand new facility that is this impressive.

I guess in a lot of ways I and many other Gopher fans are like your kid at Christmas. Except it's the biggest and best September Christmas Gopher football fans have had so far in this lifetime!

I guess if you don't like reading about the stadium and game day details I'd avoid reading Gopher Hole for the next month!

I believe the message that someone linked said there will be 4-F16's and a B52. I could be wrong on the B52 but I know there was a second type of aircraft planned.

I'd edit this before the spelling and grammar police track you down.

I think the aircraft in the fly-over will be...

...Navy F/A-18F's flown by real aviators (that would be Naval aviators for you civilians)! :D

I'd put the most likely candidates as F-16s (out of Duluth or there was a rumor of the Thunderbirds).

I would assume they will be Air Force planes - the AFA would probably not be all that happy with a flyover from the Navy - might even be considered insulting.

We are having a fly over in our own stadium when we are playing AIR FORCE . . . Irony can be pretty Ironic.

One air to ground missile and our new stadium looks like Stalingrad all over again.

Two flyovers. F-16s will be piloted by all Minnesota pilots. They won't get confirmation on a bomber until about two weeks out.

After the flyover the F-16 pilots will land at MSP then be driven to the game. They will be introduced to the crowd during halftime.

That someone was me. I don't know if its accurate or not, but that's what posters told me on the AFA Scout football forum.

I, too, was hoping for a B-52 or something truly special. It sounded like it is pretty typical for there to be a flyover for AFA road games.

It has been nice not having to look at that guy's ugly mug since the inauguration. Let's keep it that way, please.

I was stationed at Castle AFB in California in the 80's. It was then a training base for B-52 pilots. I've had plenty of B-52 flyovers. :) Those things don't look like they should be able to fly, <s>even when</s> especially when the are flying. It was kind of disconcerting to be on the runway when the training pilots were landing. I had an apartment 8 miles off the base but in the flight path, when the B-52's came in, you couldn't hear anything else, they are loud and take a long time to gain height. They don't call them the Big Ugly Fat "Fellows" for nothing. :)

Just guessing, but I think these are the guys who are going to do the fly-over:

179th Fighter Squadron Wins Raytheon Trophy ---------

04/15/2009 - DULUTH, Minn. -- Chief of Staff of the Air Force, General Norton Schwartz recently announced that the 179th Fighter Squadron is the recipient of the 2008 Raytheon Trophy for its accomplishments in Fiscal Year 2008. The 179th Fighter Squadron is attached to the 148th Fighter Wing; a Minnesota-based Air National Guard Wing.

The Raytheon Trophy, formerly known as the Hughes Trophy is awarded for outstanding performance to an Air Force or Air National Guard fighter unit with a mission in air defense or air superiority. Units are judged on performance in the air defense or air superiority mission, exercise participation, inspection results, squadron and/or individual accomplishments.

In addition to an "Excellent" Phase II Operational Readiness Inspection and "Mission Ready" Alert Force Evaluation rating, the 148th deployed in support of Operation NOBLE EAGLE and IRAQI FREEDOM. After the Air Force grounded its F-15 fleet, the 148th quickly deployed jets and personnel to Hickam Air Force Base to perform Air Sovereignty Alert for nearly three months. A week after returning from Hickam, the 148th deployed jets and personnel to Elmendorf Air Force Base to perform Alert for another five-weeks. While at Elmendorf, the 148th was the first F-16 unit to intercept a Russian "Bear" Bomber off the coast of Alaska. The 148th performed Alert from both Minneapolis and Duluth during the Republican National Convention where they executed two active scrambles, three air patrols and prosecuted five temporary flight restriction violations. The 148th completed the year by deploying to Joint Base Balad, Iraq for a third time since 2005.

This is only the fourth time an Air National Guard unit has received the award and only the second time an F-16 unit has received the award since its inception in 1953. 179th Fighter Squadron Commander, Lt. Col Eric Chandler said "It's awesome for the Bulldogs to get recognition for the hard work they did in 2008. All our people make it look easy, but it isn't. They deserve this kind of award."

148th Fighter Wing Commander, Col. Frank Stokes stated that "This award is especially important to our Wing because it validates the intense effort we have put forth over the last several years: the many times we have answered calls from ANG, ACC, and the Air Force; packed up and deployed on short notice; and accomplished the mission in a professional, efficient manner. We have answered those calls repeatedly, and often returned to take an inspection or deploy to the AEF, and then immediately fulfilled another short notice request. We have done all this without complaining, and in a manner that often left the operation in better shape than when we came. The Bulldogs should feel good that our efforts were not lost on our Nation's Leadership - they have now rewarded us for them."

I'm pretty sure he was joking.....

I love it when people miss really obvious jokes.... it is part of the fun of this board seeing how some people can miss really good satire....

I heard that the airport was just going to redirect all flights over the stadium for five minutes...

I'm in agreement with UpNorth. I listed all the active F-16 wings in the last post on this and the other wings besides Duluth that are nearby are based in Madison, Des Moines (named the Badgers/Hawkeyes), and Souix Falls. I think it's safe to say the Wisky/Iowa pilots/wings won't be used. =)

best flyover i ever experieced was a low level B-1 going supersonic, or whatever you call it. even though we expected it, it was still a surprise and amazing. also experienced flyovers by the thunderbirds a couple of times - pretty dang cool.

the low levels are the best, but highly unlikely at TCF.

Any flyover will be awesome and I will really be pumped for this one. I spoke to a member of the athletic dept who said the flyover would be so amazing "It will be like an air show". I can hardly wait.

If we had instead scheduled Army, would there have been a "march through" instead of a flyover?

If it were playing Navy, they would have a flotilla down the Mississippi. Or they could fill the stadium with water like the did with the Roman Colloseum in ancient days.

From what I have heard, there will be a B2 bomber and other military planes. The B2 bomber cannot land anywhere around here so it will fly up from Missouri, go over the stadium, then head right back to Missouri.
