There are 6 or 7 QBs in the NSIC who are better overall QBs than Leidner and we are trying to win B1G games with him at the helm. Every week it's an uphill battle he just has to be able to make big throws and he struggles at same. But for a Questionable personal foul call last week he would have been the goat for missing Maxx late last week. This week it came home to roost. It'll be a long two and a half years if he keeps the reigns.

Mitch is our best option and I've seen enough evidence in his progress to be optimistic he is capable of delivering a B1G championship. Is he ready to carry the team on his back consistently when the rest of the team doesn't have it's best effort? Not yet. I'm confident, if he continues to improve, along with the rest of the team, that those who gave up on him will realize their mistakes. I forgive you in advance.

Absurd. Everyone is blaming the quarterback because it's easy. Leidner did not have a great game. His value to this team at this point in the program is not bring us back from 14 point deficits. He will get better but what really needs to garner blame is our defense which should have never yielded what they did to a terrible offense. Maybe some guys could quit dropping passes, stay on their feet after a catch and then securing the ball deep in your own territory with a lead....Leidner did not play the biggest part in losing this game.

You posted similar things after TCU. Then you went away. I assume we can expect the same after every loss.

I'll make it simple for you... Doesn't matter if every high school QB in the world is better - ML7 is the best option we have for the 2014 Gophers. You might not know this, but we can't make trades or pick up free agents.

I am so sick of the backup QB lovers. The ones that have flat out stated they can tell after 1 game if a QB is good enough. The ones that already know who can and can't improve. The ones that would have played and benched every one on our roster by now.

The Gophers played bad and lost. Mitch was part of the reason, yep. So were some others. Time to bench Santoso and the sun as well I guess.

Speaking of sun. Does anyone know why Fruechte doesn't wear eye black?

Complete BS. To blame Leidner for this loss is idiotic. The O line and D line was completely out played. Leidner shows flashes at times when you think he can become a very solid QB. He's a freaking sophomore!!

Discouraging loss for sure, but there is enough blame to go around.

Agreed

@B1Gfootball: 3 #B1G QBs surpassed 200 passing yards, led by Mitch Leidner of @GopherFootball with 240 yards at Illinois.

It's true -- plenty of blame to go around. There were many problems yesterday, the offensive line among them. But the QB was also one of them. Unfortunately, the QB is an important piece.

Every piece is an important one. If the offensive line plays halfway decent we win. If Cobb doesn't fumble a ball that Illinois takes back for six.......we have a good shot to win the game. If Santoso makes that 40 yard field goal.......we have a good shot to kick a game winning field goal at the end.

Plenty of blame to go around.

Agreed. Leidner, the offensive line, the coaches, the defense, Santoso, a couple of receivers, and even Cobb can all share some of the responsibility. Only Damian Wilson might be immune from criticism.

Leidner isn't as good as he needs to be yet, but if he doesn't make some of those big plays yesterday, Minnesota doesn't take the lead. He better get used to having to deliver more often because Illinois laid the blueprint yesterday for the rest of the season. Shut down Cobb early and Leidner (and the receivers) have to be the guys to step up and do it quickly before the team falls two touchdowns behind. Considering where he started from and that he's only a sophomore, he hasn't done too badly in the Big Ten season. He has to get better and I think he can.

I played in the NSIC and love DII football but it is not even close to the same level as Big Ten football.

Agreed. People who are calling for his head have absolutely zero foresight. The in-game thread was filled with posters saying that we should have put in Streveler around halftime.

I don't think there are 6 or 7, but there are probably 2 or 3

I know just as well as any of you guys the difference between the NSIC and the B1G and actually that's my point exactly. From a talent and thowing ability standard he right now wouldn't be even a honorable metion NSIC QB. Heck the QB at Bethel throws the ball much better than he does. Accuracy is accuracy and Mitch doesn't have it on anywhere near as consistent a level as he needs to be. Don't forget he was by far the second best HS QB in his own hometime his senior year. The QBs at Augustana (Trey Heid who is the aforementioned Lakeville kid), SW State and Winona State would have all hit Maxx in the numbers late against Purdue and would have very likely made nearly all the wide open throws that he missed yesterday.

Agree you can't blame Leidner for the loss (plenty of blame to go around on that one) but it also should be noted that he is a redshirt sophomore who has 3+ years in the system so he is not some fresh kid straight out of high school. He most likely has not reached his ceiling but he also has had quite a bit of time to develop so it is no sure thing that he will get where this team truly needs him to be.

It's amazing how much you think you know about playing QB and how little you really know.

What do you feel is inaccurate about my thoughts: that he was second fiddle in his own town or that we could probably find some QBs right down the road who throw a heck of a lot more accurately than he does? I wish the latter weren't the case, but I think the proof is kinda in the puddin'.

You like his spiral now?

The "puddin" is resting squarely between your ears. NSIC!

Step in the right direction but he could shot put it out there for all I care as long as when he's got protection and an open receiver it is delivered on time and on target.

Try speed of the game and size + speed of the players Indi

No doubt, but just because Leidner had a great passing camp at the U and we took him doesn't mean he was one of the best five or six or ten QBs around back then and it isn't translating to results now. Those kids could come in and adjust to the speed of the game and put many more balls on the numbers than our number 7.

What about the quality of the NSIC suggests that the play of any number of QBs could pay better than our beleaguered signal caller? How NCC leftovers suddenly win championships? The addition of such jaugernauts as U of Mary and Upper Iowa? This is the NSIC after all. Formerly the minor leagues of DII football. It is horrible football.

I beat down Leidner's QB skills plenty but this loss, this loss isn't on him entirely. Gopher fans know how to handle a loss. See you at the Iowa game.

I apologize if this has been written already in this thread. I didn't have time to read all the way to the end.

Mitch is a red shirt Sophomore. yes there is room for improvement but seriously we have to stop using RS freshman and sophs as QB's let this kid grow up a little.

yes he made some bad throws but he has made some good ones and a few great ones too. he is learning on the job and will keep getting better as time goes on.

I feel the coaching staff takes too vanilla of a strategy early in the year. maybe its because we have a RS sophomore starting? maybe next season we will start by establishing the pass against some patsies and we can then turn on the run game?

in this particular game the whole team let a great opportunity go through their fingers. they had a chance to make some people believe in them. now all the negative nancy's are coming out bashing everything.

coaches will need to regroup and refocus and if the Team plays better there is a chance to still get to 8 wins this year

Must be the coaches fault.

I don't necessarily think our quarterback situation is as dire as some do, but whatever the situation is...in year four it is almost 100% a coaches responsibility,

Right now the coaches could have a senior or a redshirt junior who was recruited by and coached by them. Next year the quarterback situation is 100% on the coaching staff.

This year I would put it at at least 80%.

I was pretty sure I had kicked your arse in a past life. I knew it!!
