Kollock might have the higher ceiling, but I don’t think that’s clearly the case. I wouldn’t sleep on Merdinger, he had some good offers out of high school, played at a strong high school program, and he did throw for 350 yards in his one start for Liberty.
 


I wonder if we'll start seeing guys like Kollock sometimes go to a lower level for their freshman year to get playing time instead of going to a P4 to almost certainly sit for a year or two. They're talented but aren't the top end guys that can compete for the starting sport right away.

The downfall is you lose a year of eligibility then. But with the change to 9 games for a redshirt, could you see guys even try to go places with an agreement they will only play 9 games to preserve their redshirt year? So a guy like Kollock goes to a place like Campbell to get experience and then transfers to a bigger program after the redshirt year. Seems unlikely but with how things have gone the past few years, you never know.

I think you're pretty close to what could happen. The only thing in your post I'd disagree with would be agreeing to redshirt. If you start out 9-0 and then tell your teammates you're done for the season so you can portal up...I just see that being a mess.

However, I could see playing at a lower school and preserving your redshirt so that if you portal up to a bad situation, you use your redshirt on that season and then you leave again.

It would kinda cement a certain level of A, AA, AAA like you have in minor league baseball. Those "A" teams would get much better high school talent, but they know they'd only be there 1-2 years.

It's already kinda a mess if we're being honest. I'm not suggesting it should happen but would just not be surprised if it did. I'm not sure a good program at a lower level would agree to it to begin with so a 9-0 start or whatever would seem unlikely.

The easy solution is to just get rid of redshirts and make it 5 years regardless of how much or little you play.

I think they’d get less money initially going to a lower level, but of course with a solid performance they’d have the potential to level up quickly.
 




Looks like he went unsigned. Lanier a late addition to Missouri is a bit surprising. Looks like Kollock was the only guy we had on scholarship out of high school that went unsigned in the portal. Seems kind of crazy to me to think no one would want a young QB as highly rated as he was, I have to think he had some options.

I believe yesterday was the deadline to enter the portal. He can still sign somewhere.

Is it possible too many good QBs jumped into the portal thus overshadowing Kollock? I am not up to speed on the portal rules but I assume he can still land somewhere next season. Maybe when teams start looking for backups he ends up somewhere.
 






Maybe he just wants to play football? He took a shot at a B1G program and thought maybe he could be the guy sooner rather than later. He now knows that's not the case. He has more information now than he did as a high schooler. Riding the bench sucks especially for guys not used to it (like just about all D1 athletes). He probably loves football and wants to go to a place where he has a high probability of playing! That's less likely at a B1G program that is almost always recruiting super high level guys in front and behind you...unless you're the best of the best. That's probably not him.

Or, this speaks to our QB evaluation. Maybe teams thought he was overrated.

Or it could speak to how hard it’s going to be for HS QBs to break into college football. It’s highly likely that every program, regardless of division, could take a QB with actual college experience if they wanted.
 

Kid should have stuck it out and strived for backup position this year. As mentioned prior, his ceiling is higher than our 2 and 3. You’re not rated 20th best high school QB in the country for nothin

From afar totally agree. Wonder if he was passed up by someone though?

Agree totally. I don't know where things will ultimately end up for HS QBs in the portal era, but I wonder if some will simply start out at the MAC or similar level, get earlier playing time, and then seek to move up if they perform well.

Maybe....but tough to say without knowing all the details. He can still sign somewhere so could be holding out for a power 4 offer before dropping down to some lower level school if he doesn't get what he is looking for.

Maybe he decides to wait till spring ball is complete and see if some team ends up in the QB market that isn't there now.

Can't even win the starting job here, I wonder what that says about his talents.

Yeah, Fleck doesn't strike me as the type who would try and undercut a kid who decides to transfer. He seems to just quickly move on from guys who decide to leave, no point wasting time on them once they go into the portal.

ZERO chance? I dunno about that. I agree the staff is high character and not likely going out of their way to undercut transfers, but are you telling me if a coach Fleck knows and respects from a lower level calls him up for an evaluation on Kollock he’d essentially lie by blowing smoke IF there were honest red flags? Even things like, “He was #4 on our depth chart” or “He had a harder time picking up the playbook or adjusting to college speed than we anticipated”?

Now, I have ZERO idea if these phone calls are happening…and I agree Fleck & Co likely aren’t proactively making calls. They do seem like the types to just move on.

You think they’d try to help him after he wants to leave? My guess is the staff was quiet and there isn’t enough footage on him. Or his asking price was too high
