Andrew Stelter, a junior defensive end from Owatonna (MN) High, attended the Minnesota spring game on Saturday. He received a scholarship offer from Minnesota last year and was the lone non-senior named to the 2012 Associated Press All-State team.
Stelter led the Huskies to a 12-1 mark, losing in the 5A Prep Bowl title game to Totino-Grace 49-21.
GopherHole.com caught up with Stelter Sunday to learn the latest on impressions of the spring game and his college recruitment.
Gopher Hole: What was your impression of the spring game Saturday?
Andrew Stelter: I thought it was really good. You had a good turnout with the fans and they played pretty well, especially the D line. They got quite a few sacks, like five or six. They were playing well. The offense was playing well. Both the quarterbacks looked good. They just looked liked they are improving a lot. It is good to see.
Gopher Hole: What is the latest with your recruitment right now?
Andrew Stelter: I got offered by Harvard and Yale in the last couple of weeks. I am going to head up to Northern Illinois, I think next Monday. I am going to Chicago for a camp that ends Sunday, the Nike Football Training Camp and I will stop at Northern Illinois on the way back. Vanderbilt wants me to call them sometime tonight, I think. Those are the biggest things.
Gopher Hole: Have you had a chance to go to many practices or spring games lately?
Andrew Stelter: I got to the Gopher spring game and practice and the only other practice that I have been to was Iowa State’s.
Gopher Hole: Have you thought about going to summer football camps?
Andrew Stelter: I think that I am going to go to the Iowa one, maybe Iowa State. I think that I am going to go to Notre Dame Challenge. I went to that last year and it was pretty good and I think that I will go again because our 7-on-7 guys are going out there for a tournament like they did last year, so I will head up there with some of those guys. Those are the only ones that I have planned so far right now.
Gopher Hole: Have you even thought about when you are going to try to decide on a college? Have you thought that far yet?
Andrew Stelter: My goal is to have it done before this fall. Before the season starts. To get it done, so I don’t have to think about during the season.
Gopher Hole: Have you thought about what schools that you definitely want to take official visits? Have you thought that far yet?
Andrew Stelter: I haven’t thought a whole lot about it, but the Gophers, for sure. I’d go to Iowa State. Those are the only ones that I know that I would go to for sure right now, based on the offers. We’ll see what happens.
Gopher Hole: It seems like from reading some stories and talking to you in the past, it seems like Minnesota seems to be the favorite. Is that right?
Andrew Stelter: Yes.
Gopher Hole: What makes them the favorite in your eyes?
Andrew Stelter: I just know the program the best and the coaching staff. Where they are going in the future, I think the future looks bright there and I think that it would be fun to be a part of turning that program around.
Gopher Hole: Have you even thought about just committing and getting it over with? Or do you want to check out a few more schools to make sure you are making the right decision?
Andrew Stelter: I’ve thought about it, but I am going to make sure that I am 100% with my choice and what is best for me.
Gopher Hole: Did you get a chance to meet Dimonic McKinzy, a quarterback from Kansas City, who committed Saturday, at the spring game?
Andrew Stelter: Yes. I shook his hand when we were in the recruiting room. I said “hi” and introduced myself to him, but that was about all we talked about.
Gopher Hole: Did you know that he had committed or did you hear about it later?
Andrew Stelter: I knew that.
Gopher Hole: What would it mean to play for the homestate school?
Andrew Stelter: It would mean a lot. Having my family and friends being able to come watch me every Saturday up there. It would be fun, I think.
Gopher Hole: You are doing track and field right now. I know that the weather hasn’t been cooperating much. How has track season been going so far?
Andrew Stelter: It has been going pretty good. We got to throw outside for the first time Friday at the Hamline Elite Meet. I have only been able to throw the shot outside and my best throw so far this year was 55 and ¾ inches, which was inside on the gym floor. I am hoping to get that up to 58, 59 by the end of the year.
Gopher Hole: Has it been frustrating weather-wise because you haven’t been able to get outside?
Andrew Stelter: Oh, yes. We have been in the gym the whole time. I was talking to my coach and we are definitely going to go outside tomorrow. We have to. We have been inside every day throwing.
Gopher Hole: I know that it is hard with track season going on, but what things are you working on to continue to improve yourself as a football player?
Andrew Stelter: I am still lifting three or four times a week. Hitting the weights hard. It is fun doing that with the other throwers, too. That definitely helps and doing other things like keeping my weight up and my speed up. Doing speed workouts and things like that. Watching film and becoming a smarter football player, too.
