Hayden Biegel, a 6-foot-6, 243-pound junior offensive tackle from Wisconsin Rapids (WI) Lincoln, recently attended a Gopher spring football practice. He has received three scholarship offers and is getting recruiting interest from Minnesota. GopherHole.com recently caught up with Biegel to learn the latest on his recruitment.

Biegel helped lead the Red Raiders to a 12-2 mark, losing to Kenosha Bradford 7-0 in the WIAA State championship game.

Gopher Hole: What is the latest on your recruitment? I think that you have three offers from Illinois, Wisconsin and North Dakota, right?

Hayden Biegel: Yes.

Gopher Hole: What others schools are you hearing from right now?

Hayden Biegel: I’ve been talking to Iowa State, Northern Illinois and also Minnesota.

Gopher Hole: Have you had a chance to go to many Junior Days or spring practices?

Hayden Biegel: Over spring break, I visited Wisconsin and this is my second visit. It was nice to get down to Minnesota.

Gopher Hole: What are you hearing from the Gophers?

Hayden Biegel: They are interested in me. They haven’t offered me yet.

Gopher Hole: Have you thought about what camps you might attend this summer?

Hayden Biegel: Definitely want to try to get down for a one-day camp this summer.

Gopher Hole: Do you know what other camps you want to attend?

Hayden Biegel: I am going to make the one-day camp in Madison and just stay with my high school team and go through some camps with them too.

Gopher Hole: Do you play any other sports?

Hayden Biegel: No. Right now, I am just doing power lifting and trying to keep my speed, since I am not going out for track.

Gopher Hole: What things are you working on to improve yourself as a player?

Hayden Biegel: Right now, I take a lot of protein shakes and try to gain weight. Also, weight training with the team and the head coach. I’m trying to keep my speed and keep working hard in the classroom and the weight room.

Gopher Hole: What are the expectations for your team next year?

Hayden Biegel: Our offensive line, we are all back on the O line, so that will be good. Our defense will be questionable. We lose just about everybody besides one of our linebackers and our safety.

Gopher Hole: What do you see as your strengths as a player?

Hayden Biegel: Mostly, getting leverage on people. I am trying to gain weight, so we’ll see how that goes.

Gopher Hole: Have you thought much about a possible college major?

Hayden Biegel: Our family is on the business side of things, so somewhere around there.

Gopher Hole: You come from a football family, right?

Hayden Biegel: My brother (Vince) signed with the Badgers (over offers from BYU, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Stanford and Tennessee) and my dad (Rocky) played at BYU.

I'm thinking the Badger offer must not be a commitable offer at this point. Seems a no-brainer that he'd already be a verbal if that were the case.

I'm thinking that myself.. but maybe he really is interested in what Coach Kill is doing here. And if that's the case.. Effin' aye right man!

From what we've heard on Badger recruiting websites, his offer is as a greyshirt, with the possibility of him joining the team with his normal graduating class if our other offers fall through.

His brother took a while to commit as well, in terms of when he was offered, even though it was still relatively early compared to other 2012 recruits. Vince received the majority of his offers before the 2011 class was even signed up, so he was able to go through the recruiting process earlier than most prospects.

I also remember hearing during Vince's recruitment, that his family places a high priority on diligently going through the recruiting process, and that when a commitment is made to a school, that it is a binding oath, and not one they would ever break. I'm sure Hayden will camp at a few schools to try to accumulate some offers, as well as take a few visits before committing to whichever school he chooses. Because his offer would technically have him join the 2014 recruiting class, there is no hurry to commit because our 2013 offers have no bearing on space in his class, so his spot wont be "taken." Furthermore, if he commits to a greyshirt offer, there is no incentive for the staff to offer him a regular scholarship.

Doesn't serve any of his interests to commit early, especially with a brother in a Wisky uniform already. If he wants more offers he'll camp for them and hold off on showing favoritism one way or another. Coaching staffs might shy away if he's seen as a Badger lock.

I understand you need to continually recruit players but it seems to me the Gophers have recruited a boatload of OL in the past 2 years. They have virtually their entire starting OL back next year. Why would an undersized OL want to come here given the circumstances? The Gophers need to use the bulk of next years scholarships on DBs and DLs IMO.

Gray or Redshirt then be ready by junior year. It would be nice if we didn't have to play OL before their redshirt sophmore year.
