The younger Mayes says he'll probably end up where Gopher commit Alex goes.

Connor Mayes, a 6-foot-4, 338-pound 2014 offensive lineman.from Van Alstyne, Texas, is the younger brother of recent Minnesota football commit Alex Mayes. The brothers made their second trip to Minnesota for the Gopher football camp last Sunday. Mayes previously visited the Twin Cities this March as he attended spring practice. GopherHole.com caught up with Mayes at the camp to learn the latest on his recruitment. This interview took place before Alex committed to Minnesota.

Mayes shined at the Gopher Camp last Sunday. Gopher fans are hoping that with Alex Mayes already committed that the Mayes duo will join the Olson and McAvoy brothers on the Minnesota offensive line.

GopherHole: It was a warm day for an offensive lineman to participate in a camp setting. Do you feel when you go to these types of camps and combines that you are able to pick up some skills that are hopefully going to make yourself a better player?

Connor Mayes: Yes, sir. Coach Limegrover is a great teacher and he just knows how to coach kids like me and my brother.

GopherHole: What schools are you hearing from right now?

Connor Mayes: The schools that have offered me. Minnesota, UConn, Colorado, Colorado State and Texas State. .

GopherHole: What other schools are you hearing from besides those schools?

Connor Mayes: Michigan, Baylor and the schools that keep up with Alex.

GopherHole: What camps are you going to try to hit the rest of the summer?

Connor Mayes: We are going to try to make it to K (Kansas) State. We are going to try to make it OSU (Oklahoma State). We went to their camp, but it got rained out, so we want to go there and get some work in. I know that we are probably going to do a couple of more camps. Just don’t know when.

GopherHole: How did you first start hearing from Minnesota?

Connor Mayes: They got in touch with Alex and they heard about ‘baby brother.” They like what they saw when we came up for Alex’s visit and I got an offer.

GopherHole: What would it mean to play together in college?

Connor Mayes: It is a dream to play with Alex. Probably where he ends up going is where I am going to go.

GopherHole: Are most of the schools that are recruiting you and recruiting your brother and visa versa?

Connor Mayes: Yes, sir. We want to be a package deal.

GopherHole: That is a good thing for the school because they know that they are getting two talented players.

Connor Mayes: Yes, sir.

GopherHole: What things are you really working on to continue to improve yourself as a player?

Connor Mayes: Pass blocking and flexibility. Hand placement.

GopherHole: What do you see as your strengths as a football player?

Connor Mayes: I’m mean and I fire up hard.

GopherHole: What are the expectations for your high school team this upcoming season?

Connor Mayes: We are ranked 19th in 2A, so I think that we have a good chance at state.

The more I read from these kids, the more I really like them. Sign them up!!

one of coaches first statements was about building a foundation. we are seeing that foundation being built, its nice to see a team being built the right way.. we must win the battles in the trenches. that is the way you win in this confrence.. i personally would like to see some big men for our defensive line as well... but i am very happy with the progress so far

Ditto. The first thing I noticed is that he answers by saying, "Yes, sir."

More commonly said in Texas and the South in my experiences.

I think "baby brother" would make a nice addition to the U.

This is just all good. Jerry is recruiting well and the program is turning in the right direction.....finally.

I wouldn't say recruiting well, average at best. Once Minnesota stops getting out recruited by multiple non BCS schools. I will then say recruiting is going well. At this point, to early to tell.

I'll say that we are recruiting well if/when we have an 8 win team in the Big 10.

Fair enough and a reasonable criteria to use.

Love that. Play a round of golf with strangers in Texas and everyone will remove their cap before shaking hands on the 18th green. My favorite thing about the south. These guys sound like good kids.

That's not at all reasonable.

Why isn't that reasonable? Are you insinuating that if we are winning a lot of football games but our commit list is still littered with guys with only MAC offers that isn't good enough for you? Or are you insinuating that if we continue winning 3-6 games a year but have commits with multiple BCS offers that that is acceptable?
