Q&A: Andrew Trout on Committing to Home State Gophers: “It’s Truly a Dream Come True.”

Andrew Trout grew up dreaming of playing for the Gophers. The Rocori High School (MN) junior is 6-foot-6, 295-pound, Offensive Tackle who committed to his home state Gophers in his sophomore year. The 4-star Gopher commit is a consensus Top 300 player nationally and one of the top 25 offensive lineman in the Class of 2026.

GopherHole caught up with Andrew to talk about his early commitment and what makes Minnesota unique to him as well as his relationship with fellow Rocori alum and Gopher legend, Eric Decker.

GopherHole: First off congrats on committing to the Gophers! What does it mean to be able to play for your home state?

Andrew Trout: You know, it’s truly a dream come true, growing up in Minnesota I’ve always been a fan of the football team and when I found out I could play for them, it was that-a dream come true.

GopherHole: Is there a certain aspect about Coach Fleck’s coaching style that has drawn you to play for him?

Andrew Trout: Absolutely, yeah, I love his energy, his energy levels. He’s always super energetic in his coaching style, its more than just football, its faith and family, and growing as a man as well.

GopherHole: Have you always known you’ve wanted to play college football?

Andrew Trout: Oh, yeah, definitely. Growing up I’ve always been the bigger kid playing sports, so I knew I could do something with my body, and I have always loved football, so playing in college was definitely a dream.

GopherHole: You know, Minnesota has a few different rivalries including Wisconsin for the Axe, as we took it back this year are you excited to play for this type of Rivalry?

Andrew Trout: Oh yeah, I’m super pumped! Rivalries in college football is what makes college football, college football. It’s the best atmosphere in the whole sports world.

GopherHole: You were the first to commit for the recruiting class of 2026 and committed your sophomore year, was there a reason why you committed so early?

Andrew Trout: Yeah, I had other options, but I knew I wanted to play for Minnesota, so there was really no point in waiting.

GopherHole: You weren’t the first football commit from your high school, have you had a chance to meet Gopher legend Eric Decker?

Andrew Trout: I have yeah, I’ve talked to him a bunch. He’s a great guy and has given me some great pointers, but yeah overall a great guy.

GopherHole: How would you describe yourself as a football player?

Andrew Trout: I would like to describe myself as physical, getting to the point of attack, exploding off the ball. And when I’m on the field I’m a different person.

GopherHole: What has been an important part of your game to be able to play at a top level?

Andrew Trout: You know, just technique really, in high school you can kind of get away with being the bigger and stronger than everyone else, but once it comes to college its more fundamentals and technique and being able to master those skills.

GopherHole: What are you most excited about when playing for the Gophers?

Andrew Trout: Ah, that’s exactly it, playing for the Gophers that’s probably the most excited thing about it. And obviously playing in the bank. It’s an amazing atmosphere and a beautiful stadium.

GopherHole: Is there a certain quote or saying you draw motivation from?

Andrew Trout: Yeah, it’s my favorite bible verse John 1:37, I say it to myself every morning and it’s probably my biggest motivator when it comes to everything I do in life.

Two things jumped out to me...
