Etling started 12 games for the Boilermakers over the last two seasons: seven as a true freshman in 2013 and the first five games of 2014. Junior Austin Appleby finished last season as Purdue's starting quarterback.
At the end of spring practice, Appleby had not separated himself from Etling and the rest of the quarterbacks in the wide-open race for the starting job. Redshirt freshman David Blough and true freshman Elijah Sindelar are still in the competition, though Etling's departure leaves Appleby as the only scholarship player with game experience at the position.

I remember his first game....talked about how big a recruit he was, how he energized the crowd, etc. Didn't play against the Gophers last year. Was a Rivals 4 star....offers from Iowa/Colorado.
