Proud of MN and WI players and fans

I used to like to cause chaos and provoke the opposing fans. I am 45 years old now. The kids playing the game are young enough to be my kids. I just wish people could go to the game, cheer for their team, have fun, and through the entire game, laugh, enjoy the banter, and cheer as everyone's just there to watch kids play a game
Absolutely. I saw a clip of a distraught OSU fan claiming yesterday was the worst day of his life. I wish he could heed your advice.

The very definition of first world problems is calling a loss the worst day of your life.

I don’t really get needing to plant it.
But I REALLY don’t get needing to be angry about it
Just all around stupidity from both sides. But my assumption is that conferences will put in some sort of consequence for attempting to plant a flag on an opposing field....just no need for it.

Real problem in the Michigan/OSU one was the jackass from Michigan who grabbed the flag and purposely ran into a crowd of Ohio State players as everything was calming down.

Will be interesting to see what if anything is done to address some of the issues from this year.
-Field Stormings - some of them leading to long delays because the fans couldn't even wait until the game was over.
-Home fans throwing crap on the field because they don't like a call.
-Teams planting the flag on a rivals field.

I do find it interesting that almost every time there is an issue like this in the big ten it involves either;
Michigan foorball
Michigan basketball

At least the last 5 years or so

We have been to Madtown a number of times over the years but due to moving the game to TDay weekend those trips ended. I went Friday with my son and two pre-teen boys who live in Fond du lac and I had some real concerns based on our past experiences. However, the WI crowd was very well mannered as described by others. Almost passive, reserved and respectful. I guess losing does that to WI fans who we have often witnessed as being overly obnoxious and over bearing.

My two 10 and 12 year old grandsons are now Gopher fans, have a true understanding and knowledge of the Axe, its history and the significance of the long standing Gopher/Badger rivalry as do my adult children.
I have always said, the better your team is, the worse the fans are, If WI was 9-2 coming into this game, it may be a different story. MN fans are no different. I have have seen bad behavior towards other fans, but usually when we are doing well.

I never had any issues with Iowa fans, ( been to 2 gopher - Iowa games). never been to WI for football, but have had issues at Gopher - Badger games in Madison for Hockey. Every fan base has their idiot fans

In thinking about the modern state of the game, it is worth recalling why the Floyd of Rosedale trophy exists. Real violence was being threatened that makes flag planting fisticuffs seem pale in comparison.

Maybe Governor Whitmer should bet Governor Dewine a barrel of Vlasic pickles, versus a case of NORKA Soda, for the Pickle-Fizz Trophy?

In Michigan’s defense, in 2 out of the 3 football fights I think you’re referring to, Michigan State pretty clearly instigated.

Michigan did instigate this one but by doing something IMO that did not warrant a reaction.

Iowa and Wisconsin are exact opposite

At Wisconsin the older timer fans are great and the young fans used to be the worst. Possible they’ve become less horrible since they haven’t won as much. I haven’t been to Madison since 2016.

At Iowa, the young fans are fine but the old timer fans are whiny and insulting
Couldn't agree more on the Wisconsin side. I went to the Alabama/Wisconsin game earlier in the year and the old timers were great. Even when I revealed I was a gopher fan who was there to root for Alabama, the banter was friendly and engaging. On the other hand, an elderly Alabama woman walking in front of us on the way into the stadium tripped and fell and was subjected to a solid 30 seconds of "YOU F#CKED UP, YOU F#CKED UP..." from the students waiting to get in. This lady had to be 70 years old and was clearly hurt.

This rivalry sure has changed…seemed like just yesterday we had Gopher fans taking chair legs in the eye sockets from Badger fans.

I was there on Friday with the family and it was fun. The Badger fans that are willing to show up in that cold for a 5-win team are true fans & not clowns. I didn’t see any problems pregame, during or post game.

Some Guy is right. Winning & losing can change a fan base. Nebraska fans sure were nice in ‘11 & ‘12 when they knew they were going to drill us. That tune sure has changed.

Haven’t been to Lincoln since pre pandemic and they were still nice

Is it over?

This was Wisconsin chopping the goalpost down next to the MN student section while the band was playing the school hymn. They did change the way trophy games are conducted in that the trophy has been moved away from the team’s bench to the end zone to avoid potential confrontations.
Not everyone will agree, but the consequences of this sucked.

That kerfuffle ended the awesome tradition of keeping the Axe (and other trophies) behind the holding teams bench.

Rhys Lloyd spiriting over and hurdling the Badger away bench at the Dome in 2003 was epic. There's been a little bit lost these days with the trophy being wandered out to the end zone now.

This has been my experience as well. I saw far worse things (consistently) from Wisconsin and Iowa fans in and around the Metrodome than I ever did at Kinnick, Camp Randall, or at MN after 2009.
This is 100% accurate.

Have been to Madison 9 times and Iowa City 8 times for our game.

The traveling/road fans are WAYYYYY worse when we play them at home vs. when we are playing them on the road.

I've had a couple instances with nasty Hawkeye fans in IC, but honestly never even one with Badger fans in Madison.

I get the headline of this thread but it is embarrassing that you have to congratulate adults for behaving like adults.

I was 0% less happy that we took the axe from the end zone v. behind Wisconsin's bench. I can't speak for the players but just let me take the dang thing and I'm good

Traveling Iowa fans are by far the worst, no question for me. Been to Madison for probably a dozen games. Outside of a couple drunk students, only experienced some good hearted ribbing.

Penn state fans were brutal
. The old ones nice, young ones awful

Indiana I can’t analyze as no one was there

Random idea to think about here: First, teams who win a big rivalry game want to show off and flex their win, especially on the road. Second, I think rivalry games with a trophy are cause for a naturally different type of celebration where you flaunt the trophy. In games where you don't have a trophy on the line, that might potentially lead a team to plant a flag or do something else to flex their win. I believe most of the fights that occurred this weekend were in games that don't have hardware on the line. I'm in no way insinuating that in a trophy game there can't be fights, we've certainly seen that within the Axe rivalry. And I'm also not saying teams who don't play for a trophy should plant a flag in the middle of the field, etc. I just believe teams who win a "trophy game" naturally tend to celebrate differently than teams who win a rivalry game with no hardware on the line. This is certainly a rough hypothesis but something to potentially consider.

I suspect that the various conference commissioners will come out with sternly worded statements proclaiming that the "Planting the Flag" routine has been outlawed, and any team that attempts it going forward will be met with "severe consequences."

of course, if they wanted to have real consequences, they would withhold TV money from the teams involved, because that is really the only thing that matters in today's D1 world.
And NIL money...

Hmm

Don’t remember the year but it was kill/claeys era
Was either 15 or 13 I think
It was 2011.

The fracas wasn't because Badger players were chopping the goal posts. I think it's dumb, but i also understand the concept that to the Victor go the spoils.
The fracas started when they ran through the gathered team, staff, and band mid-Hail to chop the post, and knocked down and ran over a bunch of people to get there.

Both Kill and Paul Chryst had to do a lot of damage control and emotion management of their teams to get the temperature down in both locker rooms.

Badger teams have since come to the east end zone and chopped that goal post, but they've had the presence of mind to wait until Hail is done and everyone has left to do so.

Further demonstration of how much bad juju that 2018 win resolved on our side. No more talk of chair legs or Essen Haus beer steins.

Speaking of the Essen Haus, the joint is on its last legs. The property is being redeveloped into high rise housing.

It was 2013- and Gary Andersen was the Badgers coach at the time, not Chryst.

I'd heard about the future Essen Haus closure too- went there for a schnitzel and a stein post game on Friday. Guessing that will be the last time, really sucks. I love that place!

I know many of you won’t want to hear this, but I was quite proud of Minnesota and Wisconsin while attending the game in Madison.
I concur. After chopping the goal post on the Fieldhouse end, the Gopher players ran down to the student section end while the UW band was waiting for their Fifth Quarter performance. I thought that might cause some issues, but there were none that I saw and I was impressed that the band patiently waited for the Gophers to have their fun and move back to the other end. To their credit, the Gophers didn't linger too long down there. Don't know if there was any complaining, but from my vantage point it seemed that everyone handled it well. (May have helped that by that point there were only about 500 Badger fans left in the building.)
