Proposed $20M Surly Brewery site less than a mile from TCF

I wonder how much the bars and pubs around TCF stadium will appreciate having a brewery move in on a piece of their game-day business...? After all, many of those establishments also sell the Surly brews, and game day promotions at Surly would place the brewery into direct competition with the retailers.

Pretty sure those establishments will be fine. Plenty of people will still want to head to big ten, stub& herb's, etc. I actually think this will be a great game day addition.

This is great news! I think the whole area to the east of the Bank is ripe for a renaissance.

For those like Schnauzzer that don't care for hoppy ales, Surly makes a really great German style of beer now called Helles. It's a very popular style in southern Germany. Not as hoppy as a Pils but really good!

I don't know if the U can have a alcohol sponsor or not but NT needs to get all over this. Shuttles to the stadium before and back after. Can make a nice deal with Surly. I drunk fan base is a louder fan base!

Surly Brewing Co. has released the first architectural drawings of the $20 million destination brewery it intends to build near University Avenue on the border between Minneapolis and St. Paul.

The drawings are from HGA Architects. In April, Surly announced it has purchase 8.3 acres at Malcolm Avenue and 5th Street SE, with plans for a brewery capable of producing 100,000 barrels a year, plus a bar, a restaurant, an events center and a beer garden.

Plans currently call for environmental site cleanup to begin this fall, construction to begin late in 2013, and the project to be completed by the end of 2014.

No need for a shuttle. Lightrail will take you from door to door practically...

So Surely, or Summit, step up with a Maroon and Golden Autumn Ale or a Thirteen-Lined Harvest Lager!

That is totally not what I had envisioned. Seems very post-modern industrial minimalist. I guess I was picturing more of a tavern feel, but on a larger scale. Still think it's an awesome plan and excited to check it out, just not how I drew it up in my head. :)

We invented a Maroon & Gold -- similar to a black & tan but with Summit & Premium. It tastes like sh-t. We still order a maroon & gold, just in separate pitchers.

Not really. You'd have to walk almost a quarter-mile just to get to the light rail. If you're young and fit, no problem, but most people wouldn't consider walking .25 miles "door to door". The transitway is much closer than the light rail.

They can have an alcohol sponsor, don't know if they will. The U signed a 6 year with Minnesota Brewing back in the mid-90's. The U gets some money and a Minnesota company gets the exposure. A classic "Win/Win". They then backed-off saying that a University having a beer sponsor sent "the wrong signal".

How they missed all the Miller and Bud advertising during College Games is beyond me.

Roseville based Pour Decisions Brewing Co. makes an ale in the fall called "Maroon and Bold Ale" that is an all-Minnesota ingredient IPA that is maroon in color. They sold it at Stub and Herbs last year.

FYI. The Pour Decision guys are a couple of PhD type people from the U who decided they rather make beer.
