5. RB Jeff Jones, Minnesota
For head coach Jerry Kill, landing Jones in 2014 was meaningful on many levels, including keeping in-state stars from signing with another Big Ten school. Academics shelved Jones last year, but he got of the gate quickly this offseason, impressing the staff with his ability as a playmaker and his dedication to the game. The Gophers are hungry for RB David Cobb’s successor and weapons on the edge. Jones is capable of filling both roles, but Kill employ him as a slot receiver, while allowing Rodrick Williams and Rodney Smith to shoulder the load on the ground

Cue comment that this technically isn't his redshirt freshman year.

Quit with the nit picking, for all practical purposes he is, he's in a rare situation that's analogous to being a redshirt. Just accep,t that they are using the closest common reference for his situation, even if it technically doesn't apply.

He wasn't nitpicking, just pointing out that others most likely will be.

Gophersports now lists him as a RS frosh and not a soph so that ends that debate. It's official now.

that means he did enough in the classroom to warrant another year of eligibility right?

No, he needs to have at least 80% of the credits towards his degree to graduate by the end of his 4th year to get a 5th or you can look at it like he already has 5 years but if he doesn't get to 80%, he will only have 4. It's really just how you interpret it but of course Gophersports says it's the latter.

Is Jeff really only going to be used exclusively as a slot receiver or is he going to get carries out of the backfield as well?

He looked very good catching the ball out of the slot in the spring game but I think he will get occasional carries. My $.02.

Jeff won't be around to play for 4 years. The NFL will call before then. Jeff will fill many rolls and be all over the field including as a RB.

I think JJ will be our starting RB by the time the 2015 B1G season starts.

I just hope he is a play maker and difference maker in the game. We need someone to step up on offense with Cobb and Maxx gone and I would love to see JJ be the guy

If academic progress is the key to him getting four years of eligibility, with the system in place for monitoring progress, tutors, etc. I like his chances of succeeding. I also like the prediction that he'll leave early for the NFL. If that happens, the Gophers will win a bunch of games.

I hope that Jeffrey Jones has L. Maroney type talent, and is so good that he has to get carries as a RB.

I fondly remember 2003 when MBIII has coming back from a lost year (hamstring), Terry Jackson was back after putting up huge rushing numbers in 2002 (out of nowhere), and Thomas Tapeh was finally healthy.

Despite all this Maroney showed up at Camp and was so impressive he started to get carries the NC blowout games, and proved to be so good they could not keep him off the field, leading to the end of Terry Jacksons RB career at Minnesota. Barber of course was great that year as well.

If JJ can show Maroney type flashes, he might never leave the field. I am looking ahead to seeing Smith carry the ball as well, and do think that Roderick Williams has a great chance to impress this year.

One word for the upcoming season: INTRIGUING.
