Its funny how the people on this board have already reversed their thoughts about this guy after watching 1 press conference...just weird how you can hate him one day and love em the next. True Minnesota Fans...

just my 2 cents..

In people's defense, I don't think anyone hated Kill. It was just the overpromise/underdeliver deal by Maturi and company that upset them. I think a lot of people grew to like Coach Kill today and I hope more will over time. It's going to take results to get Minnesotans excited about Gopher football, but that's always been the case and would be with any coach.

Many of the haters only come on here:

a) the afternoon of a loss;
b) the afternoon a coach is hired or fired..

... and then they go away until a and/or b occur again. I'm sure we'll hear plenty from them after the 1st loss.

Right, any intelligent individual could decipher this yet people like Gopher Way keep squawking about how bad everyone thinks Jerry Kill is, when in reality it was about people being mad at Maturi for not meeting his own expectations.

I know this is a pretty mind blowing thing (to me anyways), but some may have to altar their opinion of Maturi as well...

Exactly. My initial displeasure wasn't directed at Coach Kill, it was directed at the man who hired him.

I feel much better about him now. It doesn't change my feelings about how the search was handled. A bungled process can still yield a satisfactory result. It doesn't mean you shouldn't try to fix it.

1. Kill did a great job with the presser. I like him.
2. Very amusing how Maturi rewrote history with his parameters for hiring. He set the guidelines up such that you couldn't have hired Leach and the only name that could have been filled in at the end of all the parameters was "Jerry Kill". For instance he stated that it was a parameter that you had to know upper midwest recruiting...... I'm guessing they'd have offered the job to several coaches that wouldn't have met that one.
3. Kill was obviously told to make ZERO promises of future grandeur. Kill is Maturi's anti-Brew.

I didn't hear alot of overhype talk like Rose Bowl, Big Ten title etc. I liked it.

And just what is your point about how the ..."search was handled. A bungled process"... Sounds sour grapes to me because you didn't get to have the real scoop on everything to sound like a hero. Yikes, howeda7, that statement scared me about you. Sorry. Doc

I agree with your opinion that more hate was due to the way the search was handled and more importantly Maturi...

I just dont want to see any more losses to the Jackrabbits and/or Coyotes!! HAHA

Problem is too many fans here Altar (as in worship) their own opinions here. I am sure that Kill will make them alter their whiny opinions.

He won the press conference. So did Brewster 4 years ago. Same people (me included) were so excited after hearing him talk.

I'm still skeptical because of Maturi and no press conference is going to change my mind. With this hire, I'm definitely taking the wait-and-see approach. There's no honeymoon in my mind.

Sat Sept 3, 2011 most likely - if that's a win he'll be indoctrinated into the Gopher Pantheon the same day.

This plus the fact that unlike Mr. Brewster, Kill had a track record as a head coach to look at and that record wasn't bad. Maybe after Holers got over the fact that they didn't hire their personal 1st, 2nd or 3rd choice they thought that Kill wasn't a bad choice after all.

Or drugs, lot of drugs could have been involved.

A couple of things that stood out to me;

1. He seemed self-confident. That is something that should translate to his players.
2. He is very much about the team concept. I also liked the statement about his teams not being out worked.
3. He realizes the importance of recruiting & developing relationships with the Minnesota High School coaches.
4. He seems very genuine & determined. I think he will not be out worked on a personal basis trying to make this club a winner.

I will admit, he was not my first choice (2nd, third, or even fourth for that matter), but the fact is, he is the new Head Coach for the Gophers. He was right when he said that this is not Jerry Kill's team, it is Minnesota's team. Coach Kill will have my upmost support & I wish him and the team nothing but success. Hopefully everyone on the team will get behind him & they can continue what they started to show the last two games! Go Gophers!!

Don't forget Sunday mornings...

I was listened to it on WCCO. Turned it off afterwards, the talking heads were bashing the hire - how about if they applied their "professional expertise" to actually analyzing the hire.

Weirdly enough Kill is very much personality wise like his good buddy Gary Patterson. I've met both personally (good friends with Patterson's neice) on numerous occasions (Kill while at Emporia State and Patterson just back around home). Both are just small town blue-collar Kansas boys. They aren't going to be flashy, but they are hard working straight forward small town guys.

Kill style wise when it comes to coaching should mesh very well with the BIG 10.

Subtle difference.

Yes, but important. I can think Maturi screwed the pooch on this hire, but that we might be ok long term.

Maturi needed to fix what he did wrong four years ago. He didn't do that. He may have hired a very good coach that will build the program back to where we were. Kill may even over take that, but you cannot discount that Jerry Kill didn't do what this hire needed to -- instill confidence in the program and reinvigorate the fan base.

Sometimes that's ok. Take away Brewster and there is perhaps disappointment, but not anger, but Maturi can't take away the massive mistake he made four years ago.

Brilliant move by AD Communications to not let Maturi take questions. They let Kill shine, prevented Maturi from having to publicly field the tough questions they were expecting. Some reporters I'm sure asked him the pointed questions later, but 95% of people are only going to see the press conference.

Just before the press conference, I had the radio on KFAN. Common man was talking about how he didn't know how many coaches the Gophers have had, so I switched to WCCO. It would have taken less time for him to go to wikipedia and count up the number of coaches than to go on about how he didn't know. Maybe I just have this idea that people in the media should know things.

We are finding out which on air host do their home work and which do not.
They need to realize that their listeners are much more informed as a result of the internet.

A couple of things I don't think were mentioned but stuck out to me:

If I'm not getting the job done they don't have to fire me I'll know it and leave on my own

I wasn't my wifes first choice and maybe not even the second or third but I ended up with her. HMMMMM!
