OK Leidner did not have a good game. I know it - everyone who watched the game knows it. All I ask is that we do NOT spend the next week with 13 different threads rehashing the QB position. Leidner is the best the team has at this time. A year from now, things could be different. But complaining about Leidner will accomplish nothing this year. We just have to hope he plays better in the next two games - and hope that his coaches and teammates find a way to help him.

You are correct sir. It was not a good game by him today though.

A fellow Norwegian speaks the truth. Team needs to get ready for Nebraska as we control our own destiny.

My main complaint about him today as he had poor body language, no spark and just didn't seem mentally in the game ready to play.

I thought Leidner played fine. He threw two picks when we had no choice but to throw. We don't have any receivers that consistently get open and so he had to take some chances. A faster, more athletic (than our receivers) defense was able to make some plays and pick him off. I think it is foolish to believe any QB on our sideline could have done better today.

I DON'T think he "played fine." You are right that we don't have anyone any better but if we trade QB's with OSU, we most likely win the game. We simply have to recruit a better QB - that is the main thing holding us back from being a contender and going to the next level. Or possibly, Leidner gets better and takes us there himself next year but he isn't there yet.

Aside from not having a great game, his receivers didn't give any help - no separation, and no one made any plays to the ball. With a fast defense like O$U, why would we set ourselves up for INTs by continuing to use routes that consistently got jumped by the secondary?

Disagree... It's a mistake to focus on results of his performance, and instead should focus on his process. One should ask, Is he improving? Is he improving by focusing on deliberate improvement in his processes? Is he progressing from the beginning to end of the season?

I saw him play much better than against Iowa. OSU is just way better than the Hawks.

Mitch showed signs of mental growth. He was playing a great team, with intense speed. On the first series he showed discipline by not trying to force plays that were not there. He continued for the most part with the same improved decision making until he was forced by game circumstance to increase risk taking.

even still, it appears at first glance, to be making tighter throws, thus missing by a smaller margin. He also is gaining confidence in his ability to make tighter throws.

He still does not check off the first receiver well, but that can be said about some NFL QBs too.

Overall, I'd say he demonstrated that he has, and continues to get better. That is all one should ask of every Gopher.

I wouldn't say he played fine. 7-19 85 yards 2 INT is a really bad game.

Unfortunately he is the best option they have at this point.

Yep, they blitzed a lot and our receivers were not getting any separation.

He did not read the read option very well today though. That's a big part of this offense. He should have kept it a few times that he didn't.

Another Norwegian here. Anyway, he did not have a good game, but should not be blamed for the loss. At this point he's just not good enough to win a game for us. Hopefully he becomes that player. Nebraska up next, let's go gettem.

Those numbers aren't all on him though. There is much more to a passing game than just the QB.

This is a very silly post. Very very silly.

Considering the conditions, he played well enough to put us in a position to still try to win the game.

the loss not all on Leidner but he didn't do anything to put the team in a position to win. that was Cobb and 3 Ohio St. turnovers.

Aside from Mich. State and Virginia Tech, no one has scored more points on OSU than the Gophers. I salute Leidner for keeping us in the game until the last seconds against the 8th best team in the country. (BTW aside from the Virginia Tech game, 31 was the fewest points OSU has scored all year…including against Mich. St….one reason for that is because the Gophers WON the time of possession battle…which can be credited to our offense).

I agree with every single word above. Well said, sir!

I get what you are saying and I'm not the biggest ML7 fan, but he played the best he could today and gave us some opportunities to win. A few plays he hardly got turned around to throw on Play Action and was about to get popped in the mouth. Tough to make confident throws when that happens.

He didn't play fine. He played quite lousy. You are right that nobody on our sideline could play better today, but our quarterback play was not "fine" by any means.

I hope a 23.9 QBR will never be fine.

South central MN German here (born in New Ulm, grew up in Sleepy Eye). Nobody on this team is good enough to win a game by themselves, in my opinon. It must be a TEAM effort and a TEAM effort only. If we live and die by that statement we'll be just fine the next two weeks. If the team took it to individual levels, we're in trouble. In regards to ML7, IMHO, there's too much blame on the QB when we lose and not enough credit when we win.

Me too

One example of a bunch...if you are going to run a quarterback sneak for a 1st down, then get your wide receivers lined up correctly.
Quarterback's job and that mistake was crucial. Too many poor decisions and questionable leadership instances to be fine.

Leidner is definitely getting better. His throws are better even with two picks one of which was deflected. He has more poise and does not get rattled as easy.

We played an elite offense. He did well considering he had Joey bosa crawling up his nose every other play.

Hunter Mason is my dream Gopher QB. 160 yards per game. High completion percentage, and few turnovers. No frills. Just move the chains on 3rd and 5 and hit the open receiver. Every game. Not every other game. It will also take some decent receivers too, though.

I don't think Leidner himself played any worse than he did against Iowa. If you substitute Iowa's pass rush with OSU's, substitute Iowa's DBs with OSU's, exclude Donovahn Jones and decrease the temp by 15 than he would have had the exact same stats last week as he did today and vice versa.

Reading this thread has made my head hurt. There are real people out there who think the QB play today was "fine" and "put us in position to win"? Is this honestly what it has come to, that a performance like that is considered acceptable? Mitch is a big boy and playing Big10 football, criticism is ok, it doesn't make you any less of a Gophers fan. Mitch may be the best current option, but it no way was today anything but a trainwreck from the QB.

This coaching staff has done a great job building the roster from top to bottom, I'm satisfied with the teams overall performance. They will not take the next step until they can bring in a real Quarterback

7-19 85 yards 2 interceptions

I guess context isn't important. Go away mkAz. By your standards I'm guessing WAst. is the best. Go away - you have zero clue.
You don't think he has room for improvement? Really? And I'm the clueless one? Wow.
