We found out that one is the punter from Green Bay. Does anyone know who others might be? Kill stated yesterday on the sports huddle that they are working very hard in MN and Wis on kids with DAK/MAC offers. QB Kline from Blaine? Others?

What is the difference between a preferred and regular walk on?

Thanks

Preferred walk-ons are guaranteed a spot on the team. Much better situation to be in than a regular walk-on

Nothing like walking on and working all through training camp only to find out you're not going to make the team.

Yup, makes sense...thanks.

Sorry for the the thread hijack OP.

Yeah, but they were one step closer to living my dream of playing for the Gophers than I ever was.

Walk ons...

Do they sign papers also on Signing day, or do they just show up after they have registered for school?

I read the Link regarding walk ons. If I read it correctly, he cannot start practicing wtih the team until after School has started and that would be in September after our first game out west. Kind of touch to deal with that except that punters I suppose could linger off to the side and do their own thing which I would think would be some sort of violation.

Another difference: There are only 105 players allowed at preseason camp, so preferred walk-ons are guaranteed to be there.

Orseske will be the starting punter anyway, so it doesn't matter. It will be nice to have an experienced punter two years behind Orseske who will be ready to go once he graduates.

I'm assuming he will redshirt so shouldn't be a big deal.

A roster spot means he's one of the 105 that are allowed to start camp before school starts. A team member means they're guarenteed a place once school starts. A prefered walk-on with a roster spot doesn't have to wait until school starts.

The Gophers return Dan Orseske, who averaged just 36.1 yards per punt this past season. He failed to average more than 40 yards per game in a single contest, which seems somewhat incredible. Orseke finished 114th in the country in punting average (last according to ESPN). Orseke was highly recruited out of high school, but if he doesn't regain his form, it wouldn't be surprising to see a competition for the starting job. .

With Brewster gone, perhaps he regains his form. He was pretty good in '09 prior to his illness and progressively improved after Brewster's firing this year (as did the team). Curious I know. I think Brewster's extension (reduced buyout) put a lot of pressure on the coaches and team to their detriment. You don't expect a coaches extension to hurt a team unless you have a grossly incompetent AD writing the contract. Might have been the case.

The pressure of a lame duck coach is what these kids were relieved of when Brewster was fired. Brewster's extenion was a good thing that Maturi did. He lowered the buy out and started looking for a new coach.
