The Gophers' rush defense would welcome yet another instance of déjà vu.

This season started the way last season did. The Gophers' nailed down the running games of nonconference opponents, only to be carved up by Maryland in the Big Ten opener. If that pattern continues this weekend against Iowa, well, that would be OK.

The Hawkeyes beat Minnesota, 17-10, last season but it wasn't because of their running game. The Gophers held Iowa to an average of 3.7 yards a carry, and 125 total rushing yards, in Iowa City. That kind of performance would help when the Gophers (3-1) face the Hawkeyes (3-1) in the battle for Floyd of Rosedale at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at TCF Bank Stadium.

First, Minnesota will need to correct the mistakes that allowed Maryland to amass 315 rushing yards, and 8.5 per carry, a 42-13 road loss on Sept. 22. Gophers defensive coordinator Robb Smith wasn't interested in revisiting that on Tuesday.

"That was two weeks ago, and I'm really on to Iowa," he said, adding, "I'm just focused on us being elite this week."
