Per Greder:

The Athletic projected Monday that Minnesota will play against Fleck’s old team, Western Michigan, in the GameAbove Sports Bowl in Detroit in Dec. 26. First, it would be a far cry from the aspirations Fleck openly shared in preseason about a huge goal of being in the conversation for the College Football Playoff this winter. Second, it would be the Gophers’ fourth overall trip to the Detroit bowl (formerly known as the Quick Lane Bowl) since 2015, and a third visit across Fleck’s nine seasons in Minnesota.

It also would create a must-win situation for Fleck.

Go Gophers!!

Don't see why that would be awkward? Disappointing but not awkward. I would think a difficult breakfast combo with Collins would be more awkward
Yeah, Awkward is an odd word choice. He didn't recruit or coach any of the players on the Western Michigan roster and the current coach isn't even the guy that followed him at Western Michigan and has zero ties of any kind to Fleck.

So outside of playing against a team with a familiar looking jersey I'm not really sure how that matchup would be awkward.

Ending up in Detroit against a MAC team would definitely qualify as disappointing. Hopefully we take care of business this weekend and don't end up there.

It would be awkward clearly, but kinda right up PJ’s alley he would deal with it fine and the intrigue behind all that would make it somewhat more watchable than otherwise. With all the potential fun matchups we can get into as part of the Big Ten bowl agreements playing any MAC team sucks ass But this would do so less.

I won’t be there. Once was enough for me. Ridiculous to accept the bowl in the first place. Put the equipment away, do some soul searching and figure out why you are at the bottom of most of the B1G key stats. Release the decoys, and hit the portal hard ala Indiana. Find new coordinators and a new OLcoach. Find someone who will coach his kids to recognize possible stunts instead blocking air and then come “ late to the party”.

A must-win? LOL

Or what? Are they saying he will be fired? A must-win is a playoff game where there is no other option.

Oh I suppose the Vikings next game is a “must-win” as well and if they lose that one then the one after that will be a must-win.

Do you really think that's better than getting an extra few weeks of practice?

It'll be Northwestern in Detroit, anyway. They'd bring more fans, who are closer and just happy to be in a bowl game.

If we go 6-6, I all but guarantee it's the Rate Bowl in Phoenix. Great area with a lot of U alumni. We want to be there.

If we get to 7-5, there's a chance we could get into the Las Vegas bowl, but would have to beat out Nebraska (not likely, if the bowl's preference matters). That bowl is the same thing as the Mayo bowl last year ... I believe they flip flop every year as to which is a Big Ten bowl.
