In another thread (I don't recall which one), someone was wondering what the Gophers' true record looks like compared to teams from the Power 6 conferences (I currently define as ACC, Big East, B1G, Big XII, Pac 12, SEC). Here's the breakdown, from best winning percentage to worst.

It is the SINGLE MOST thing I think could kill the Gophers if they're fortunate enough to remain on the bubble on Selection Sunday.

Wow! That is a fine group we're in there.
 


The thing is that they've been in a position to win some impressive road games - notably Michigan - but couldn't pull them through. They've played better in most road games than their record indicates, but they haven't been able to pull out wins.

lack of good guard play.
 


Boston College = stinker (lost by 12)
Illinois = embarrassment
Maryland = ???
Michigan = gut-wrencher
Michigan State = embarrassment
Nebraska = gut-wrencher
Northwestern = TBD
Ohio State = embarrassment
Purdue = folded midway through second half
Rutgers = gut-wrencher
Wisconsin = dug one out

Only have two more opportunities to soften the damage here.

Embarrassing. Clem was pretty bad on the road, but at least he won his home games.

That’s my #1 gripe with Pitino. Doesn’t win at home enough. Rarely beats a team that is better. Even Monson did that at times.

WAG, the numbers back you up. Here are the numbers (since 1999-2000 season) of how Gopher head coaches have performed at home vs. eventual NCAA qualifiers. Obviously, this does not yet include current season results.

Home Record vs. NCAA Qualifiers Since 1999-00 Season
1 Dan Monson vs. NCAA Qualifiers/Home: 21-19 (52.5%)
2 Tubby Smith vs. NCAA Qualifiers/Home: 16-20 (44.4%)
3 Richard Pitino vs. NCAA Qualifiers/Home: 10-16 (38.5%)
4 Jim Molinari vs. NCAA Qualifiers/Home: 1-3 (25%)

Totals: 48-58 (45.3%)

It's not that hard against poor teams. The gophers wilt against garbage and they are gonna get killed for it. End of game we have nothing. No set plays, no scorers that can break somebody down and poor free throw shooting. It adds up to not being able to close out games that are close or come down to the wire.
 






Yeah, the abysmal road record could be a real killer come Selection Sunday. That in combination with the late-season swoon (losers of 6 games already in February) leaves us in my opinion looking just terribly shaky at the moment and might well prove to be fatal when it comes to tournament chances.
