Post Michigan loss, comments from Tubby, Rodney, Trevor, Austin and Julian

I feel like I always need to give this disclosure, I type as they talk, so not exact quotes, but pretty close:

Julian Welch:

Andre and Rodney and everyone always told me to be aggressive, so I just tried to play my game.

On bench criticism - I don't read that stuff. Everybody on the bench is real positive.

On turnovers- it was one of those games, we were careless with the ball.

Austin Hollins

Tubby said we needed to take care of the ball, we just need to do a better job of that.

We played a few tough teams, but we can't blame it on them being tough, we're tough.

On preparing for the next games - We go back to practice, there's a lot of games left, we need to pull out some wins.

On the big build up of this game - There were no nerves going on out there, we prepare for that, we just didn't execute.

Trevor Mbakwe

They got hot and our turnovers helped them.

We need to get back to work, it's early, anything could happen.

Some people might jump off the bandwagon, we have to pull through, sneak some on the road now.

I think we stopped being aggressive and when we started being a passive team it hurt us.

As far as experience, they didn't have more than us

There are no moral victories, but we were in both games, we fought back.

It could have been, but after the ball gets in the air, it's anyone's game.

(On Tubby's thoughts on turnovers) He's not liking our turnover problem, gotta get back to basics, keep working and believe in each other.

Rodney Williams

We've got a lot of fight in us, we can't keeping digging these big holes.

We come in and prepare well, but don't execute well, that's hard.

I still believe we can challenge for a Big 10 title.

(On getting down about these losses) All of our losses came from top 5 teams, we were able to fight back.

Tubby Smith

• We just got outplayed tonight, I'm disappointed that we didn't raise our level of play, to the level I thought we needed to. We have had a real tough time taking care of the ball. Michigan made a lot of shots, and we made runs during the 1st half, they have a lot of weapons, we just couldn't sustain a good drive. We always shoot ourselves in the foot, or do something to knock the wind out, and turnovers are the worst. We're not doing a good job defending people, and that's been 2 games in a row now.
• I was disappointed in our practice yesterday, especially on the defensive end. You play the way you practice.
• We've got one guy that come everyday, everyday, in Austin Hollins. He's become the hardest worker.
• We weren't very smart, in taking care of the ball, and making the proper switches, we must have given up 22 points off TO's in the 1st half. They had so many dunks and lay-ups, that means you're not defending. Guys start pointing a finger, and that's a lack of communication or effort.
• We expected guys to do more off the bench, and we didn't really get much from them. Julian had a good shooting night, but 3 TO's, Maverick and Oto with TO's too, it's hard to keep them in the game with those.
• We did a good job of getting back in the game when Andre was out, we were within 2 points a few times.
• When Julian was making shots, he was pretty productive. We gave ourselves a chance.
• I would think I'd see more push out of the guys to start the 2nd half. Usually we respond much better, I don't know what happened there.

Soooo..did you ask him why he put all three of these guys on the floor at the same time, again? The least of Tubby's assistants will have forgot more about basketball than I'll ever know but the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

Too funny, the players and Tubby seem to be saying the same things as the fans are saying. So at least we are all on the same page, lol. Hey, the 1st step to fixing a problem is acknowledging that a problem exists.

He had 5 bench players on the floor again. There is no point in me getting pissed off anymore as nothing will change. It just makes no sense.

Tubby points our Austin as being a hard worker and you can see it in his game, he has been the only consistent player this season, really hope others learn from him and see the pay off working hard gives you. Austin is one of my favorite all time gophers because of his work ethic

That is the most honest thing that a poster can say.

Nope, because of this...

...not looking like this is ever going to change. He's always done this.

A non press conference note, I guess Sid asked Andy Katz if he was here with Howard Cosell...and actually meant Dickie V. I'm pretty sure Cosell died almost 20 years ago...

Funny story!! I saw Sid talking to his icecream.

Sorry, my question was probably more rhetorical/frustrated in nature. Usually I try to stay away from this board after a loss. I should know better.

I agree 100% with the take on Austin. If the other players could emulate his work ethic on the floor we would be in great shape. He may have an off shooting night, but his engine is always running. Too many times you look and Austin is the only one moving without the ball.

I thought, offensively, we stood around too much last night. As Trevor said, very passive. Almost playing "afraid to lose".

Its a tough run of games we just went through. Unfortunately, in the B1G is only gets marginally easier.

People need to step back and realize we have 3 losses...3 losses against teams in the top 5 and 2 of them were #1 at one point. I think this team will be fine and much better come March.

Some thoughts:

- Tubby teams at Minnesota have tended to be mentally fragile. They have responded poorly to adversity. Is this the start of a slide? It's amazing how once the pressure if off, they play so much better. The pressure will only increase with 2 straight losses. I'm also fascinated in the mental aspect of an athlete in big situations. It's interesting to see how Tubby's teams can just be trainwrecks at times. I think it starts with the coach and the culture surrounding his program. Rodney's recent tweet is anything but a surprise.

- This team has too many limitations to be "special". I don't think a top 3 seed is in the cards. They'll probably land in the 4 to 6 range with a 50/50 proposition to make the Sweet 16, depending on the 1st and 2nd round matchups. I see the ceiling as being the Sweet 16. The elite teams (1 and 2 seeds) are just too much for this team. On the bright side, if you have told me this would be a Sweet 16 team before the season, I would have taken it and most fans would have. It's just that Duke, Indiana, and Michigan all proved that this won't be '97 all over again (minus the scandel). They're a good, not great team. Too many limitations.

- Coleman needs to shoot open 3's. He'll make 25% of them, which isn't great but we'll get the O rebound roughly 40-45% of the time on the misses. His defender knows he won't shoot and plays off of him, making his above-average driving ability nullified. It's amazing how instinctive defenders can be once they see you shoot the ball to try and block it, even if you're a below-average shooter. If all he does is drive, defenses will continue to collapse, making things more difficult for others.

- It's been said over and over and over but the sub patterns have to change. The air is taken out of the ball AND the building when all 5 subs are in there at the same time. It kills the momentum. It might fly vs Penn State or Nebraska but not against the big boys.

- Welsh over Mav

- EE and Ingram need to set a physical tone when they're out there. I'd like to see some nice hard but legal fouls. I'm tired of seeing EE put his hands above his head the moment a foul is called on him, as if he's trying to take back the fact that he touched the opposing player. We need a Miles Tarver on this team in the worst way. Someone that can get under the skin of the opponent and loves to "create" contact. It's OK to throw your weight around and let it be known you'll knock someone on their a$$. This is the B1G.

- Austin Hollins is becoming my favorite Gopher since Dusty. He goes out there and does his job and knows his strengths and weaknesses. Smart, heady player.

I like alot of things about this team. But they don't take of the care of the ball at all. They're always sloppy with the ball, have been all year long and that's going to be their downfall. At this point, it's just what it is. They make ill-advised and at times downright stupid plays while passing the ball on offense. When they were overcoming that earlier in the season, nobody brought it up because the team was winning. Now comes good competition and we see how really really sloppy they are when push comes to shove. They'll still overwhelm some teams due to their athleticism, but I have a feeling that ball security is going to be an issue the rest of the way.

I actually really enjoyed that "out of character" post from you. It's absolutely ridiculous that we have to watch Tubby put out a lineup that turns the ball over more than it scores when we play good competition. It would benefit some of those players to play with some first line players. There's a reason they're called role players. When you stick them all together, they can no longer play their roles. It's asking too much of them. Obviously Welch's shot has been off this year, but the best part of his game is going around screens and hitting midrange jumpers. It's a lot easier for him to do that when he has decent players around him.

I'm done making fun of Sid (not saying you are). I turned the dial to 830 @7:40 the other day for the first time in at least a year, they guy hardly knows what planet he is on at this point. It's moved past funny and jumped to sad.

Yeah I agree. Way past funny, even past sad.
