Post Game Thread: Gophers Lose a Very Winnable Game at Cal

Brutal game from Perich and the coaches. Fleck is a good program builder and above average recruiter. He's not a good game day coach. He needs strong coordinators. I don't think he has them right now. Harbraugh especially.

Koi had a 1st percentile game today. So many mistakes, but these things are gonna happen especially when you are 19-20 years old and doing everything on the field.

Would like to see him with his mind right next game

This. If you’re going to be an executive coach, you need damn good coordinators. We’re 1.5 short there

Off to vacation. See Gophers football in two weeks...

B1G play is different. This is good.

Hopefully this is just that one game that got away and we take care of business against Rutgers, Purdue, Northwestern, etc. My prediction for the season was 9-3 with one dumb game that we should have won being that third and that’s still possible. Just need to be better and learn from this game, actually take things away from this game, and put the Perich cart back behind the horse.

It's early in the season and 9-3 with a solid bowl game still isn't out of the question but it also feels like this could be the game we look back to as the beginning of the end. Play calls were stubborn, cowardly, or plain stupid for most of the night. Fleck tried to turn Koi into Travis Hunter and he showed he doesn't have the capacity to worry about so many things. I have to think if both teams swapped coaching staffs we would have won by at least a touchdown.

When you play the way the Gophers do the margin for error is really small.

Couple of turnovers, couple of absolutely horrendous decisions by the two-way player and questionable play calling on both sides of the ball and you end up with a loss.

What say you GopherHoler’s?
Embarrassing. Gross. Cal was better prepared, and better coached by a considerable margin.

The inexcusable, 1st grade play call with Perich.

The inexcusable, horrid defensive play calling on the field goal right before half. Rushing 3 AGAIN after getting burned repeatedly by rushing 3.

The asinine defensive substitutions to play micky mouse with the play clock and getting a too many men penalty.

The run call on 3rd down in the 4th quarter. Again, a disastrous play call.

Add in Koi Perich’s huge mental mistakes.

Lastly, I’ll say it again, we’ll never win 9 regular season games without a legit OC.

Interesting post game news conference PJ flat out said the bad decisions like those by Perich cost the game, also said eight times it was on him and three or four times that losing this game might be the best thing that could happen to the team.

I don’t see 9-3 with this team with how it’s coached. The margin is too low with too many coin flip games. Talent is there for it, but you have to let it rip when you have chances and your players can’t make mental mistakes that kill your. Team as they are will assuredly have another egg in there.

PJ has kind of patented the shitty start, finish strong approach year in/year out. Just have to ride that wave.

Nice to see Brockington have a breakout night. Ijeboi with almost 5 yards a carry. Geers had a highlight TD.

The defense had an interesting approach. Not atrocious numbers-wise but with little help from the offense they had to be better. They couldn’t stop them from running the clock on the last drive.

Speaking of which PJs penchant to run the play clock down to nothing when down by 2+ scores continues unabated. I’d like to see a little more urgency or at least the ability to have urgency when needed. I hope it’s coming.

Beyond that, burn the tape Koi. Wow. Sorry. Better days ahead.

Hats off to Cal. They were better.

A reason for hope: we recovered last year from the Iowa debacle and at least it was not a conference los—two weeks for the coaching staff to address issues and for Darius to heal. That said, tonight daggered much of the energy & interest in the Rutgers game. Just a barbiturate of a performance starting with PJ & his staff. Depressing trip home for the multiple thousands of Minnesota fans who made the trip.

Alright. Finished my recording. We looked terrible. Koi was an undercover Badger agent - can't believe how he hurt the team repeatedly.

Another season, another occurrence of dropping games we should win. Looking like another 6 or 7-win season at the moment. Why can't we have anything nice...

losing to OSU and Oregon is a given

that means winning all of the rest has to happen for 9-3

that's not happening

Dude, you shouldn’t be counting on Darius.

Agree with what you said. Especially the bold. Two weeks to be angry and hungry. Take it out on Rutgers!!!
