Post game notes-Rick Pitino told the Gophers "Our team is as talented as his team..

...is this year."

Great tidbits from today. Here you go:

Richard Pitino:
• Good win for us, I think that SDSU played really well especially in the 1st half. I think we got much better today, especially on the glass, Austin had 14 boards, and Elliott was great. We're handling the ball well, we are good right now on defense, we've got to get better.
• We've got to continue to improve. I don't think anyone is really weak, technique wish, we've got to get better. We gave us a couple of 3's at the end of the game. I think we're good, I just don't think we're great (defensively).
• I love Oto and I love Joey, they are good kids and try hard, but they're not naturally gifted rebounders. We've talked about looking ourselves in the mirror and looking at our weaknesses. Austin was the guy we looked at, and he had to get 7-8 rebounds a game. I thought he could give us better than we got last year, he's got long arms, he plays well, he's physical. I wanted to be realistic, if they averaged 3, got get us 6, if you average 5, go get us 8.
• On Austin Hollins - He was awesome, I thought he was so good tonight. 0 turnovers, he's so athletic. I don't think Austin Hollins gets enough respect. I think we have 2 faces of our program, Andre and Austin. He's such an easy kid to coach, it's almost disturbing. Coaches sons are very smart (laughing). On a day to day basis, Austin gets it. He understands the big picture. That has to do with his father, but his mother as well.
• On Rick Pitino being there - He was there? (Laughing). He was trying to come to the FSU game, he wasn't able to make it. I didn't know he was going to make it until I walked on the court, and saw my idiot brother yelling. I brag about this place so much, I wanted him to see it, and I'm glad he saw it. He looked good in that maroon and gold, I think if one of our guys gets a job, we can just slide him into the assistant coach spot - he owes me, I coached for him for 3 years.
• We had great chemistry, substance, we were humble - if we can do the same, we can get better. The difference between our guys and his guys is that they believe their lottery picks. We need to build that confidence.
• Their focus was good this game, I don't think they let up with their mentality at all. We were much more business-like this game. Now what we have to do - we don't play until next Friday, and that's the worst thing in the world, so we need to get them ready.
• Andre Hollins was being a jump shooter too much, he needs to get to the line more, he can do that 7-8 times.
• If you could put Elliott and Mo together, you would have one hell of a player. If they can push eachother, they can make themselves better players, competition is the best thing for that.

Joey King
• We don't think we played as hard as we should of against New Orleans, but we're feeling a lot better about this game.
• On meeting Rick Pitino - It was a great experience, it was nice experience, it was great to meet him. He holds a lot of knowledge, there's a lot to learn from him.

Austin Hollins
• On 1000 points - It feels good, I knew that was at stake I wasn't too worried about hitting it.* It means a lot, this is my senior year, it's been a long journey. I didn't know throughout the game.
• Minnesota has great fans, they have always been very supportive
• On Rick Pitino - He said it was a great milestone, he did congratulate me.*

Elliott
• I feel a lot better (after being injured), getting a double-double
• I feel like my ankle was 100%, having time off really helped and doing treatments with Ben, our trainer.
• On Austin Hollins - He came out and stole a couple of rebounds from me (joking). He's always had the athleticism, he just had to have that mentality to go get rebounds.
• On Rick Pitino being there - I didn't realize it until halftime, then I looked over, we didn't know he was coming.*

Malik smith

On what Rick Pitino told them - He told us that the sky is the limit, keep working hard, it's all about our focus.
He said that our team is as talented as his team this year. He said he was proud of us, he watches us pretty much every game and always roots for us.*

Rick Pitino was really cheering and into the game. Very cool he wore maroon and gold.

I hate SDSU - I hope we never play them again.

Why not keep playing them then? We always beat them.

Awesome recap, thanks GL. I think tonight's highlight was Rick telling the announcers that Richard said "he could die here." And that was after Rick said the original plan was for Richard to take over for Rick at Louisville. I think Richard really likes it here, which is great because I want him here for the long haul.

I was wondering if that was Richard's brother sitting by Pitino Sr. His brother seemed to be much more into the game than everybody else around him, he was definitely having a good time. He was over there dancing with Goldy, jumping out of his seat on nearly every good Gopher possession, and also running right down behind the Gopher bench to heckle the ref nearest the Gophers sideline (so much so that I saw Pitino Sr. yell for him to come back to his seat and sit down). His brother was a fun guy to watch, hopefully they are both back to see another Gopher game soon!

I thought he was great fan to have there, seemed to have fun, was cheering, never on his phone, just a supportive Dad...that happens to be reigning National Champion coach.

I don't mind playing them, I think they are a decent opponent, and often, SDSU brings a lot of fans here. I'd rather have a school like that on our schedule than New Orleans.

I seriously want to know if his brother is single, because he was hilarious! You guys have got to check out this photo of his bro photobombing. Most people are subtle, he was not. I cracked up at this!

Gophers' Cheerleaders > Vikings' Cheerleaders, just sayin'

I just hope the Pitinos are as genuine as they seem. If they are, we are very fortunate to have little Ricky here!

Thanks for the notes GL.

I wasn't able to watch the game, but looking in the box score I was a little surprised at no minutes at all for Wally or Charles. Second game in a row for Buggs.

His brother must have hit up the cocktails on the flight up. Cool to see them having fun.

Thanks for the notes GL.

Why is that surprising? Based on on court performance, they have deserved exactly 0 minutes of playing time.

Well, let's see. Gophers had played 10 games prior to hosting South Dakota State. Buggs or Ellenson had seen playing time in every game except for the Syracuse one. That's why I'm surprised one or the other didn't see the court last night against the Jackrabbits. That's pretty much the reason.

Buggs has played in 4% of game minutes this season. Wally has played in 13% of minutes. Not sure what the surprise is. The only surprise should be if you thought they deserved to be playing.

Really doesn't matter if I think they deserve to play or not. Pitino is a smidgen above me in the pecking order.

Yeah, I understand they don't get in much at all, but one or the other usually does see the court. Thought maybe the opponent last night might allow them to see a little bit of time. Holding out hope that they'll eventually be able to contribute.

"Rick Pitino told the Gophers "Our team is as talented as his team.."

I was fairly sure I wasn't mistaken: When they interviewed Rick at halftime did he not say that we were only a little better than South Dakota State?

He was lying to Malik.

Actually Buggs looked really good against FSU in his limited playing time. He was very solid on defense and even hit a 3 pointer. He was only in for about 3 minutes at the end of the first half too. I thought he would definitely see more playing time after that.

He said something like that. I thought I remember him saying we were better but not that much better.

I don't think there's any doubt that there are some issues with his Dad, and I have no clue about him...but as long as they aren't enough to hurt the reputation of our program, and he wins, I'm all good. Let's not pretend that bball coaches are these great upstanding human beings. Most cheat and do dirty things...there are a few Tom Izzos and Jim Molinaris left though that give me hope.

He did say that. Richard backed off that comment when he was asked about it at the presser, and basically compared the two by saying they are hungry, humble, etc. But that's what Malik said Rick said to them!

I believe it was the dance team doing the game last night. They will cheer a lot in place of the cheerleaders. Dance team is very good.

Ha! That's so cute that you think Tom Izzo is clean.

Great coach but far from a clean image. Recruiting shananigans and covering up rape allegations for his players.

Haha, I caught that too. Doesn't quite add up.
