Post-Game Michigan Press Conference Quotes/Notes

So, it was Mitch's fault Limey called a shot gun play at the .5 yd line to win the game? Maybe, because he didn't audible out of that stupid crap and run it up the gut to win, like Limey should have called in the first place with a t/o left.

Or at least done less motion and gone to a shotgun, QB draw. I don't know, literally anything other than that play call was a better play call.

Not Mitch's fault at all. I really dislike Leidner starting. But he played a heck of a game tonight. He made the plays to win the game. The coaches made two huge mistakes that lost it (pulling Mortell and the 19 second play)

Clays just said it was his decision to throw on fist down and then try to jam it on on 2nd down

The bold is complete ****. "We're looking to get two plays off" WTF? TWO PLAYS? You have 19 seconds and a timeout from the 1/2 yard line! I would feel infinitely better about what happened if he just admitted that he and the staff were oblivious to the running clock. I just can't believe this is an actual quote. Wow.

why would they even call a play that has the motion to begin with. I just can't believe how dumb they are -- once it got to about 11 seconds he should have used the time out

Well since Claeys revealed that it wasn't a mistake on that play with 19s left, then why didn't he make Mitch Spike the ball... then do the "cute" motioning play? Would have had enough time to try a run, then call time out, then tie it.

No matter which way you look at it, he screwed up! I'm all for his taking risks... but gotta be smart about it. They wasted way too much time on that last drive also. Was he THAT confident that we would get a TD or FG?

Everyone needs to stop calling Mortell "the best Punter in the B1G". Last year folks. This year he loves punting line drives that are easy to return. He has not been very good this year.

Throwing on first down is fine. Not being aware enough as a coaching staff to know the clock was going to be running and therefore wasting a ton of time with shifts and motions is totally inexcusable. Someone on the sideline has to be able to figure out that the clock is going to start running as soon as the ball is set because the previous play ended in bounds.

And as for the decision to bench your all-big ten punter on a kick out of the endzone in a tight game is beyond stupid. Mortell might have been having a bit of an off day but that is not the situation where you take a great player out and put in a guy that has never punted in a college game before. I was really hoping it was due to injury because doing it to send a message was just dumb.

They called that motion play looking for the same result that they got against Purdue. They figured he'd be wide open and it would be a walk off win. Got cute when they didn't need to.

Claeys on if they knew the clock was running after the TD was reversed:
“Yeah, we did. We did.”

On the emotion of getting the TD overturned and if they were fully ready at that point:
“I don’t think there is enough time, you don’t have any choice. You got to be ready. As soon as they put the ball down to go, you got to go. You have to have the next play mentality all the time. I’m not saying it doesn’t take away some momentum, obviously it does but I’m also a big fan of that rule. I don’t think you should lose the ball game to somebody that doesn’t score points they way the should. The replay got it right, after I seen the first one, I knew there was a chance it was going to be marked short, so that’s why we had the offense ready to get up there right on the line and get going.”

Hasn't been as good as last year but we were still #3 in the conference in net punting coming into the game and he has averaged nearly 44 yards a punt this year. I will take Mortell even with some struggles punting out of the end zone in the 4th quarter against Michigan as opposed to Santos0

Well. The fact that he planned from the beginning for 2 plays really makes me question his coaching. As of right now, he doesn't have my vote.

Claeys on if they knew the clock was running after the TD was reversed:
“Yeah, we did. We did.”

Then why didn't you spike the ball to conserve time if you were going to get cute and knew the time was running? urggg!!

Mitch on if he was expecting the clock to start running after the TD reversal:
"No. I don't think we were expecting it to be going. I mean, I wasn't at least."

Complete miscommunication during a moment when you had time to go over scenarios. Replays in college are like an extended timeout. The staff knew the clock would start but never relayed that to the QB? Something is off if you ask me.

Claeys says he knew the clock was going to run, Mitch said he didn't know, don't think Limegrover has weighed in on that yet. To me the play call would fit with thinking the clock was going to be stopped because in that situation it makes zero sense to run a play that takes that long to setup and essentially limits you to one additional play, heck as it worked out the clock almost ran out on the first play.

Mitch on if he was expecting the clock to start running after the TD reversal:
"No. I don't think we were expecting it to be going. I mean, I wasn't at least."

He should have been well aware because after the 4th down catch to Maye the same thing happened. Unbelievable if the coaches did not remind them that this was going to happen

So stupid. Make him punt for the first time ever at a critical time?

He held him accountable. The punt that Mortell kicked to Peppers earlier was absolutely awful and cost us a TD, who is to say he wouldn't do it again? And Santoso is supposed to be a pretty good punter.

Spike the ball on 1st down. 17 seconds left.

Run that play on 2nd down. 10-12 seconds left.

Run the sneak on 3rd down. TO, 5+ second left.

4th down. Go for it or kick the FG.
Yes exactly. Very proud of the great game played and coached for the other 59:41 though (except Santoso punting).

Here are some quotes/notes from the post-game press conference. I typed this live, so they are not verbatim.

Tracy Claeys:

Talked to Kill last night. Said he was going to watch the game. Said Rebeca would keep him from throwing things at the TV. Said to take good notes for Sunday.

I'd say Claeys owes Kill a new TV.

Mitch Leidner:
"I wasn't expecting the clock to be going." (after the replay)

I had a lot of confidence. I haven't lost a QB sneak since I've been here, I think. No one stops up in that situation.

Then why the hell not call your own number on the previous play instead of dropping back into shotgun?

On why Santso went in to punt:
"Because Pete didn't put the ball where was supposed to and that caused a long return. We worked two weeks on it, so we said hey, let's give the other guy a try. Placement of the ball is so important on punt coverage--I mean it really is".
...................NO YDS AVG TB IN 20 LONG
Peter Mortell 4 161 40.3 1 2 53
Ryan Santoso 1 29 29.0 0 0 29

Makes sense..

Do you think he kicks them 29 yards in practice too?

Mitch taking the sack I think also played into it. Not that I agree with what he did, but people make it sound like he just picked someone off the bench who had never kicked and put him in. Guessing Santosa's punts are as impressive as his other kicks and he was nailing it last night. We don't know what they do in preparation and then the second guessing starts when it doesn't go as planned.
