Will we have a 2020 Football Season?

I think it will be a limited season; some of the early games will be cancelled.

As of today, my answer is that there will be no season. I declare the right to change my mind at any moment though.

Nope.

I think the soonest you will see any sports getting back to playing is the NBA & NHL starting their seasons January 2021.

I hope I am wrong.

This will make for a very long 2020.

That’s a pretty arbitrary date.
January 2021 is equally likely to have more cases than October 2020 as it is to have fewer cases

If their is no season then the juniors and the rest should be able to keep their scholarships. I guess the 5th year seniors will graduate a semester later but miss football in 2001. Even if football is not played in 2000 the seniors should get their scholarship money.

In your first poll you didn't consider a half season of 5-7 games

I think this is probably right.

At least I'll have time to get through War & Peace now

Honestly brought me a little bit of joy to see that even 50 votes in, nobody has selected the most pessimistic option.

:giggle:

I think regardless of if there's a season, there will be more limited fans. Coronavirus will still be a thing in some capacity, which will limit the number of people wishing to expose themselves to a large mass of people. So unsure if that's what the limited fans options means, but my estimation is there will be college football as by that time our government will open things back up as the economy will not be able to withstand that long of a hiatus and people will be stir crazy for something going on, which will be the justification major sports need to offer the product in order to make money

I'm guessing a possible 5 game Big Ten West season, a 5 game Big Ten East season, followed by a Big Ten Championship Game and possibly a 2, 4, or 5 team National Championship playoff.

By the football season, football itself will be riskier than COVID-19 for the players.

At risk individuals should continue to avoid the public.

The rest should where masks.

PLAY ON !!!

With all the PGA events, NASCAR & MLS announcing new dates I think CFB will play as scheduled

FWIW - watching the news today, heard two different doctors or medical experts state that they would not recommend any large-group gatherings - concerts, sporting events, conventions - until there is a proven treatment for covid or a proven vaccine.

Fauci - when asked when things go back to "normal" - said the fall of 2021.

Another doctor also said he would not recommend that sports be played - at least not with fans in the stands - until 2021.

It all depends on the numbers. things might get better sooner.

But I will still bet that there will be no fans in stands this year. I will also bet on a late start to the season and a reduced schedule.

I don’t see games happening in empty stadiums. This thing is going to have to be in a pretty controlled state before I see them risking it. If the situation isn’t safe for fans in the stands, it won’t be safe for players on the field either. Counting players, coaches, staff, trainers, managers, etc. that’s 150 plus people on the sideline/locker rooms. The very nature of the game is men in extremely close proximity, breathing heavily. The players on the field would arguably be at higher risk than the fans in the seats. And given the risk of law suit should a player catch the virus and die as a result of playing, I can’t imagine the schools’ or league’s lawyers would ever let them take the risk.

I want to be optimistic and hope they have this controlled in some way by then. I don’t know the likelihood but I will hope for that. And if they do, I’m all for a football season. I can’t wait.

This virus would rank at the bottom of dangerous things that college kids and younger have to deal with.

I don’t disagree with your statement. But I think it has more to do with liability the schools and league willing to take on. Getting hurt during a play is part of the game. Ending up in a hospital after a stupid night of drinking is outside of the school’s control. Getting a viral disease and dying while playing a school-sponsored sport that the school should have known was a risk... that’s a plaintiff attorney’s dream come true. Attorneys and risk managers are going to have a big say in whether there’s a season this year.

As shown in the graph a few posts earlier, kids die playing football every year. They can choose to play knowing the risks, or choose not to play.

Yep. And it’s an inherent part of the game. This virus isn’t. The liability for this will be a huge factor in their decision making.

Playing the 2020 season in Feb-May of 2021 seems to be gaining steam. Just a guess, but I think it’s as least as likely as playing this Fall.

The university is literally more easily sued if someone gets underage drunk in a dorm and dies than if the die of covid19

you’d have to prove that the person caught the virus because of your event. Which would be literally impossible to prove.

Universities and leagues aren’t canceling games because they’re worried about getting sued. They’re canceling because they know they should cancel for the safety of their fans and participants. It isn’t some fear of litigation.

Which is a pretty stupid plan when you consider we are equally likely to have a second or third wave in Feb as we are to have a second wave in September

You could do that, but if they plan to open the following fall as normal, that gives the athletes just a couple of months off. I think that would be brutal for football players playing a vicious sport.

Trump is on right now and is talking of opening up the country. Dam, I just get the feeling things are going to be fine in the fall.
