Key moments of the game where we had poor play calling / game management, and poor execution by the players.
1:28 mark - Trips left. 3x1 they motion Williams to quads (empty). Both LB's seem like they have the flats(motion). We let #1 free, completely uncovered for a free TD. Terrible.
4:30 mark - 3rd & 8. Trips left again. We let #2 have a completely uncontested TD. How can this happen? What are we playing here? Gousby was aligned on him, but he just lets him free. Looks like it's man, but is it a pattern read? But #2 doesn't break outward, so it can't be. Completely ridiculous pee wee level football there. Embarrassing and comical at the same time.
8:40 mark - 3rd & 1. We go under center and make 3 yds easy. Very easy. For the love of God, can we do this more often? This situation comes back again in a critical spot in the 2nd half.
8:52 mark - 3rd & 9 for us. 2:15 left before half. Illini have 7 in the box but the call was to run it. Maybe PJ should just waive the white flag in the air on the sidelines, to signal his passiveness to all his players and all the fans in the stadium. That's what you're telling your offense, that we have no confidence in you (especially the QB and WR's) to make a big 3rd down play through the air. We run it for a couple yds, and kick the FG. Fans are booing.
10:03 mark - We get the ball back on our 27 with 0:27 on the clock and a timeout left. It's challenging to move it enough to get into FG range, I get that. But my God....you have a kicker with one of the strongest legs in College FB, wouldn't you want to try to take advantage of that? He can be a weapon for you. Fans are booing again.
15:13 mark - 3rd & 1 for us. Critical 4th qtr play. 9 man box for Illini. Why not go under center again and sneak, instead of trying the slow developing run? And Newton is playing a 4i on the play, so don't tell me the future NFL draft pick impacts a sneak.
15:26 - 3rd & 3 for Illini. Empty 3x2 for them. Why is the hell do we have Selig lined up against Williams? Can't Walley travel with anyone, especially in key situations? Illini are laughing when they see the matchup, knowing it's not even close to fair. Lindy makes a huge game changing punch out for us. Tremendous play!!
16:24 mark - Two 2p conversion for us. It was there. It was a pretty tight window, but it was open. Just needed the throw to be a little lower. Critical play. Have to find a way to execute.
17:20 mark - 3rd & 2 Illini. Why in the hell does Nubin have his heels at 9 yds on 3rd & 2? We're playing Cov. 2 with no slot presence on 3rd & 2?! Are you kidding me?! Opposing OC's are laughing at this.
17:54 mark - We shift to unbalanced. Tremendous play call for the situation. Was wide open and likely seals the win. A simple 5 yd pitch and catch. This might be one of the worst throws I've ever seen on a football field, taking into consideration the importance on sealing a victory with the simplest of all throws. Pause it midway through the play. Look how open and easy it is. My God.
18:25 mark - 4 & 11. Win is sealed with one defensive stop. Cold, backup QB in now. And you decide to rush 3?! Soft. Passive. Playing not to lose. Looks like Striggow is a spy (WHY???) and he decides to rush just a split second late. Of course Williams finds the soft spot in the zone.
And the rest is history.
This is poor game management and coaching, and poor execution, in so many different ways.
And the results are a critical Big Ten loss.
