Player-Coach

I really hope this is a joke. If not, Ben Johnson has mentally broken the fan base.
It appears I am mentally broke. Good enough for Bill Russell, and Dave Cowes. It is only for the rest of the season and solves a lot of problems. I think the fans would like it.

There is always talk about player buyin. What if Ben decided to move on and a player was named coach for the rest of the season? Do you even need to hide salary as NIL? Some may say Garcia but I would name Asuma.
I would probably go either Mitchell or Fox. Mitchell probably already making calls as the PG and Fox is actually older then Richard Pitino was when he started his first stint as an assistant at Louisville
On a serious note at some point Thordon will finish the season out. I'm thinking after the Michigan game.

You might end up being right, but what's the point?

Obviously the player-coach is not happening and I'm not sure there is anybody associated with the program today that would make a difference or he would be doing so already. Last February most on this site felt Johnson had done enough in year three to earn a year four. Remember the "Ben Johnson is NOT a disaster" thread that surfaced? Now we live with that decision. There isn't enough talent on this team to avoid a bottom three finish this year and there isn't enough talent coming back to worry about the optics for next year (1 player maybe).

I think they will let this play out until they have been officially eliminated from post-season competition. Then an announcement will leak out that he's not coming back and he may or may not finish out the season. That is, barring the players absolutely quitting on this coach. That hasn't happened yet, in my view.

It is a crazy-ass idea, but I gotta admit, I'd tune in to watch a few if only for the novelty of it all. I mean at this point, why not go full circus?

Parker Fox is old enough to be a coach so he would make the most sense.
OK, I'll bite. The way Fox plays tells me he knows how basketball works. Of all the current players, he moves the best without the ball. I've said for some time that he has coaching potential. Let's do this! 😉

Worked for John Gagliardi (though he was in high school) so maybe it would work for the Gophers

I'd say make Patterson's dad the coach. It appears that he already has some say in things.

Bill Russel did it when Warmath was still coaching football. Dave Cowens did it in the 70s. You think the idea might be a little outdated?

Not to mention they were pros with lots of experience playing at a high level...not one member of this team can say that. It would be a train wreck and the fans would hate it.

I applaud the outside the box thinking but we would be a worse joke than we are now.

The joke is that guys like you believe everything you're told by the media...literally no matter what.

The OP realizes that what's going on now is a total joke. We could win the Big Ten for $6M. 5 very good starters at $1M each...and $1M spread out to our bench and coaches.

But everyone in here spouts off that we need a $6M coach to make us great by sheer intelligence. So dumb.

Edit: Not to sound negative, combative...but even if you're right and I'm wrong...I think humor and thinking outside the box is a breath of fresh air in here. There's nothing else great to talk about the way things are going.

I love outside the box thinking...glad you like it too. But I disagree that it could get worse than this.

Many years ago, way before NIL...I suggested that we all write to Prince. Everyone said I was ridiculous. But do you still think getting a guy like Prince involved would be ridiculous?

It would be fitting for this team/program.

I started a Thinking Outside The Box thread in here a year or 2 ago. I still get a little crap about my Minnesota Barnstormers idea I threw out LOL.

But to hit big...you have to predict ahead. Not just do what everyone else says. And also go by what YOU yourself likes...instead of what others say they like.

I think a minor league pro team...composed of Minnesota natives of any age...challenging other states...would be much better than this current 'college' crap.
