Play “Your the Gopher AD”! What’s your move?

#'s 483 to #500...and losing some each year.
That's not even close to accurate. United Healthcare is #4. Target is #37. CHS #97. Best Buy #100. US Bank #107. 3M #134. Etc. Only 1 out of 17 is between #480 and #500.

I laugh at everyone who says that we couldn't/wouldn't have a very good NIL fund with the right coach. Do we not remember what the vibe was when Tubby was hired? If NIL had been in existence at that time, we could have bought a better squad than the starting 5 in the movie "Blue Chips".
The Barn was rocking. Gopher's basketball was the hot topic in the media. I remember the feeling thinking "a National Championship coach is choosing to come to the U. Let's go." I still have my yellow "It's Tubby Time" t-shirt. It can happen here. No doubt. With the right coach. BUT---It sure as hell won't happen with CBJ. Never was gonna happen.
It won't happen with Medved either. He doesn't move the needle.
Need a salesman. Muss would've worked. I'm thinking Will Wade. The buzz would be here. Both positive and negative. Worth a shot.

I’ll assume Coyle has had someone ready to hire 2 years ago but is waiting out that persons contract buyout/contract end.

I can only imagine the "text messages of anger" that Coyle is sending his wife right now about the condition of the basketball program he's enabled and presided over.

The condition of the program is on his shoulders and his shoulders only. The initial decision to hire him may have been made from above him, but Joan exited the building over a year ago. This is Coyle's mess and his mess only.

What you don't change, you choose.

Go Gophers!!
Easy to say when we don't know the dynamics of the Ben hire. Not saying it wasn't Coyles decision but it was a weird hire. Anyone who says they were not shocked when Ben was announced as the coach is lying. When you had an ultra progressive president at the time and a B1G commissioner that says stuff like this:

"They're aware," Warren said of Gabel's and Coyle's recognition of Minnesota's diversity
gap. "I trust them. And I trust that they will always be focused on doing the right thing."

You setting yourself up to not hire on merit.

It 100% wasn't Coyle's decision. Also, Warren was a disaster.
BJ will be fired at seasons end and I have confidence with a new Pres, Coyle will get the next one right

You have no idea who made the Johnson decision.

And Warren was a home run hire.

I'd be shocked if it was a Coyle hire. AD's are eventually judged on how well their men's basketball and football programs perform. Regardless of how you feel about Coyle, I refuse to believe anyone would put their career in the hands of such a uniquely unqualified person. We just have not seen any other decision made by Coyle that was at all similar to Ben's hire.

If it were just a loss, I might agree, but last night was a game with no game plan. It was like watching a pickup game at the Y. Ben had no plan. A head coach cannot do that.
That's how it felt yesterday in the 1st half as well...Ben is not doing a good job coaching this team. The roster and team both have limitations with Garcia being our only truly consequential player, BUT...this team had me looking forward to the season. 1st time with legitimate depth. Experience. Results and productivity from many players (almost all of which were achieved at a lower level of competition...GRANTED). But I thought this team would have a chance, every day, because they collectively have 50 or 60 years of collegiate basketball experience. Yesterday's game changed my thinking. We are BAD and the #1 reason why we are bad is because we seem to have little coaching...no game plan...no Plan B...no offensive flow. Nothing! I will watch the rest of the year and try and remain hopeful that we come close to meeting my pre-season hopes, but I am ready to move on from Coach Johnson.

Old wins

Go get Sundance Wicks from Wyoming. He is good! Gotta get some of the Fortune 500 companies to donate to the NIL

We have 17 Fortune 500 companies in MN

Have to start turning the other cheek when putting a team together…..gotta start bending the rules!!,,,
Fortune 500 companies are not going to donate to the NIL. They get nothing out if it. 98% of the people in this state can only identify 1 Gopher player. Garcia.

The people that donate NIL money are wealthy individuals that want to feel like they own a team.

Some Fortune 500 companies like FedEx with Memphis are making large NIL donations.

I've heard this Fortune 500 thing floated out there a number of times. Nice sentiment. Wishful thinking.

Some people just do not understand how large corporations work.

Fortune 500 companies are made up of people from all over the globe. They come from colleges far and wide. Many times the leadership teams aren't from here, and (gulp) even went to a different school. They have an affinity for the state so long as their check cashes, and that is about it.

An executive with ties to the university may choose to give money to their alma matter as individuals. We have a few billionaires and probably a bunch of millionaires with ties to the school. But they want to back a winner, and we ain't got one. Problem numero uno.

We might as well hire Richard again if we hire Medved. The last two years since Pitino has had time to build his program he is 3 and 2 vs Colorado St. They each win at home and Pitino waxed him in the Mountain West Tournament last year.
We have to do better than Medved.
The last two years....Medved 40 and 29 overall
Richard 48 and 22 overall...3 and 1 this year after playing two Top 25 teams in the non conf schedule

Hard to argue with your numbers. I like Medved as a last resort.

That’s the one I have heard of too. There are probably more you just don’t hear about but I am not sure exactly why FedEx would do that. I watch a lot of sports and have no problem with individuals donating to NIL but unless my employer was getting some tangible business benefit out of it I wouldn’t want them spending their money on paying college athletes. I would rather that money be reinvested back into the business or donated to a charity that benefits people in need, not college athletes making 6 figures and going to school for free.

If by incompetent dunce, then you're correct- a home run hire :ROFLMAO:
Let's see. Somehow turned the B1G into the highest paid football conference in the land, despite the rabid SEC fanbase, and has them on every major network with long term deals that effectively limit other conferences options. The conference owns two of the top three TV markets, and good inroads into the 3rd.
Pretty neat trick.

Someone's a dunce alright, but his name rhymes with TessHoesdad.

Hire Ricky and then Ricky hires CBJ again? S-A-R-C-A-S-M emphasized.

If I am in Coyle's shoes you don't fire him now but you make sure you have everything lined up to move quickly in the hiring process after the season.

You committed to giving him year 4 so you don't over react to this loss and you let things play out over the remainder of the season. But early returns are not encouraging so if Coyle doesn't have a good feel for who he will go after when the time comes he isn't doing his job.
Yeah.
Not worth even talking about firing the coach IMO

If they don’t make ncaa tourney it’s over

Well, then it's over. Or if you're not certain, wait unit 1/2 of b10 season is over.

Lifetime deal for cbj!!

That’s what I’m saying. It’s over. Not worth even discussing
0% chance he saves his job. Because team isn’t good enough to really be competitive. I just hope we make the big ten tourney

Fire Ben Johnson immediately. Look at the 6th grade traveling coaching circuit to find a better coach. Should take all of 17 minutes.

The only real reason I could see for firing him right now would be if there was an assistant coach on the staff that they wanted to audition to be the permanent replacement. But I don't get the sense that we have that assistant here.

Suppose you could make the move when the team is officially eliminated from any shot at making the NCAA Tournament. That would give you a little bit of a public head start but you gain very little to nothing by doing it right now.

The pissy fans will still be pissy because the team won't start winning with an interim coaching change and it won't bring people to the Barn either.

When they didn't fire him in the off season they essentially committed to giving him the season to try and save his job. Has only been 4 games, maybe he pulls off a miracle and the team starts winning, but most likely he doesn't and you make the change at the end of the season.

Whether or not that was a good decision is probably a pretty good topic for debate
I wouldn’t have brought him back. But I wouldn’t have brought him back two years ago either

The only benefit of hiring him over Craig smith or Medved is nobody would blame you for cutting bait quickly. And we didn’t use that one advantage
We took a flier on our hoops coach. It is what it is
