Joe Schad reporting.

They're a little late to the coaching search party.

Pitt may get a bigger name coach because it is so easy to win in the Big East.

Fired after being co-champion of your conference has to be rough. Should be interesting to see how this shakes things up. I bet that people will be saying "If we had just waited a couple more days, we could have had Wannstedt!"

Wanny has had Pitt in position to win the Big East I believe the last 3 seasons and found a way to choke it away. Pitt is a what we call a 8-win team, but with the potential bleeding out of the woodworks to be so much more. The Big East frankly isn't that good right now and there has been no excuses for the way Pitt hasn't been able to dominate that conference.

I hope Pitt joins the Big Ten if expansion with ND happens. This kind of seems like the grass is greener firing but I suppose if they get a good coach it will be worth it.

I hear Leach is looking to coach again.

This seems like a program Golden might actually leave Temple for. At least, it is in the right state.

If Pitt and Notre Dame were to join, would they join the East, with Wisconsin moving to the West? Or perhaps Notre Dame would join the West, while Pitt joins the West. The former would restore geographical balance, while the latter would annoy Badger fans.

They will regret this IMO. Pitt has been very solid under Dave. They haven't won the big games, but in a conference that is getting tougher (tcu plus Syracuse, ucon, Syracuse, usf, and louisville all getting better) it is risky. This wreaks of when the chargers let go of Marty schottenheimer

I do agree, this is a tricky firing. Wanny has done a good job there, but as mentioned it could be a grass is always greener situation. Who may they get? Wanny was a Pitt guy! We saw what happened with Arizona State when they got greedy and pulled the plug on Dirk Koetter as well.

I'm for any scenario that annoys badger fans.

Marty Schottenheimer? You're joking right? He was 5-13 (lifetime) in playoff games and never got out of the first round with the Chargers. Norv is 3-3 in the playoffs and has won the division every year as coach of the Chargers.

Pitt would be a great fit for the Big 10. Unfortunately they don't offer anything the Big Twen would be looking for. A new tv market, a national fan-base things like that.

Rutgers stinks (literally and figuratively) and it would be good to swipe an elite basketball program from the Big East. Maybe Uconn works (2 hours from NYC)?

The point is that they fired Marty to take the next step and they haven't done much better. Norv is 3-3 in playoff games, but 2 are in the wildcard round (a place where Marty had skipped the year before by winning 14 games). Marty was 0-2 with a younger San Diego team in the playoffs, norv has taken his more veteran team beyond where Marty did just once. Minnesota is the only place where losing the conference title game is considered a lot better than losing a divisional game.

UConn was rumored at one point. It doesn't sound like they'll be adding any more teams in the near future.

Sounds like he is "resigning" and taking a job in the Athletic department.

The A.D. at Pitt was the A.D. at Nebraska who fired Frank Solich with a decent record and then turned around and hired Bill Callahan. I am sure he will screw up this hire as well.

Notre Dame, BYU, SMU, Bethel, St. Thomas, etc.

Well than the mistake wasn't firing Marty it was hiring Norv Turner.

That's exactly what I'm saying. Dave is a solid coach, but is poor in the big game and not an all time great. I'm not saying that there aren't better coaches out there, I'm saying they'll end up regretting the decision to make a change, because I don't think they'll make a hire who is any better than Dave.

Sounds like Mason. They have a lot of talent compared to other teams in the Big East along with top notch training facilities, so I can see why they are not happy with just being average. You can't fault a school for trying to win championships.

Unlike mason. They just won their conference!

But seriously, the Bears, Dolphins and Panthers can't all be wrong. Wanny seems to be the master of getting to and/or maintaining mediocrity. While that would currently be a step up, it's far more exciting to see what Kill can do. But like us with Mason, Pitt may come to regret this. Then again, it is the Big East.
