Pitino's Style versus current Big Ten Teams

think about other teams that play "different styles" and see how they do in the tournament typically.. il use syracuse louisville and vcu as a few teams that as of late have made a push in the tournament and typically make it to the sweet sixteen at least. i find it to be an advantange to these types of teams come tourney time because teams have a lot of difficulty preparing for the unusual. most teams around the country run the same types of systems and defenses so you get used to making adjustments without even thinking about it as the game goes on. but if you have to think a little more or do something different it can wreak havoc not only physically but mentally

Wow.......I could have used Dwayne Wade, but he wasn't one of the top 5 recruits coming out of Illinois his senior year.

It doesn't matter how a player rates in his state. It matters how the player rates against the nation. Your logic is just terrible. Maybe we should go after the number one guy in Wyoming, Montana, or North Dakota. Who doesn't want the best in the state? Heck, why not get the best player in Minnesota? Our state is 8-9 times the population of those states.

Bob, you may be right, but I'm guessing some of our big needs will be supplied locally. Back in the days of yore, Dutcher did wonders with those who grew up wanting to wear the maroon and gold. I'm much more concerned with the massive firepower Coach P. will need to succeed in the B1G. He will need to continue to cast a wide net to bring the Vaughns, Allerick Freemans, Alvin Elliss etc. to Dinkytown. Need to bring 3 level scorers into the game in waves.

I don't know, I think people get a little confused when Pitino talks about a fast-paced game with a lot of outsiding shooting and they think those teams are full of dynamic offensive wings. Even the great Florida teams were so good because of Noah and Horford (they were athletic enough to run but tough enough to contest a lot of shots and rebound). Heck, even the Lousiville team this year, I wouldn't call either Smith or Siva top end scorers. I mean, Smith was a good scorer, but he's an undersized SG who struggles shooting (a lot of his points come off of transition and his own defense). Siva is good facilitator, but he's not a top level scorer.

While I totally agree with you in terms of adjustments and etc, this does just touch on what was supposedly said by the coach- two of these three teams have elite talent.

I'm just looking forward - very forward - to someone who knows how to properly use bench players and knows a thing or two about good substitution patterns. Oh, and maybe someone who won't have his guard defenders sink and leave their own man wide open on the 3-point line every time Joe Schmoe gets the ball within 15 feet of the hoop.

These two things alone probably cost the Gophers a few wins or more every year, and plenty of tense moments that never ever needed to be, too many of which ended on the losing side.

Didn't Tubby say he was going to do the same thing? I know Pitino is going to go about it a different way but there is no guarantee it's going to work inside Big Ten play.
