Michigan had guys on that team that were in the National Championship game last year.

As always, my notes are typed live, not verbatim. I will tell you, Pitino was pretty upbeat and positive, but the guys in the locker room took this hard. It was more upset than they usually are.

Here you go:

DeAndre Mathieu:
We didn't make plays they did in the clutch
At the end of the game, there were 2 crucial turnovers, and the pg isn't suppose to make those (referring to himself).
Coach was happy with the way we were playing, we just stopped rebounding. We pride ourselves on playing harder than the other team and our rebounding.
When asked about a size disadvantage for rebounding - There is no size disadvantage, we'll play harder.

Elliott Eliason:
We couldn't make plays defensively down the stretch
You hate to learn the hard way, but sometimes that's the way you have to learn.
I just know the back door killed us, that was a tough one to swallow
(On getting 4 fouls) What are you going to do? You have 4 fouls...that eats at me to be quite honest.

Austin Hollins
We just got to stick together as a team, we can't hang our heads on a loss like this.*
(On his shooting) It was frustrating, I tried to do a lot defensible to help the team
Keep our heads up, we can't hang our heads on this one loss.*

Richard Pitino:
• Certainly a disappointing loss, at the end of the game when they had opportunities to make big plays, they did, and we didn't. We told them don't get back door, we got back door. There is a lot that we can learn from and get better from, and there was a lot that we did well.
• Eliason was doing a really good job, 10 boards in 24 minutes. Oto gave us a lot on the glass, so did Mathieu. There are definitely a lot of positives to take.
• Probably a little bit of both - we chart challenged shots, which are a less than 30% shots, and we took 8 of them. They played very good defense.
• I just told them, I know you all wanted to start the B1G season with a win at home, but this is a marathon, not a sprint. They have guys on that team that were in the National Championship game last year.
• (On balancing Eliason with fouls) I think that's the whole game, because of the fouls, that's what it's become, staying aggressive without fouling. I don't know if there are questionable calls that he could be smarter at. We made a lot of mistakes, but still had the chance to tie it and send it into OT at the end of the game.
• It's all about patience, I know that's a bad word in sports, it's all about recruiting. You've gotta stay positive, we understand who we are, our strengths and weaknesses. It's all about recruiting.
• On Smith - I wanted to play small, but their 2's and 3's were big, we're going to run into that. Malik has always been that guy, he stepped up and knocked down those 3 FT's like there was no one in the gym. He's fearless. He was very helpful, we wouldn't have been in the position we were in at the end of the game without him.
• Robinson - I think he's a really good player, and I never want to see guys go out. They had guys that stepped up, you've gotta give them credit, they won the game, we didn't lose the game.
• On Austin - when I look back at the film, I'll probably be frustrated with 3 boards. But those guys have carried us (the Hollinses).
• Mathieu had 5 turnovers in crucial moments, but you can't put it on him, because he's carried us. TO's is a factor, a major issue.
• It happened right in front of us, I knew it wasn't our ball, I would have liked to have been told a little sooner.
• Pitino said last play had option of either Mathieu or Smith. He said he thought Wolverines were going to foul in that situation

There gonna kill Purdue, if they take the loss hard they'll come out pissed off and defend the barn. One at a time boards

Gotta play well.....

To be competitive in the BIG. We're not going to be killing anybody. It's not that kind of team.

I think Pitino says all the right things.

He absolutely does. You can tell he grew up learning from one of the top guys at "coach-speak." Either way, I like his attitude and his perspective.

He's better than coach-speak, though. When I heard the Gophers were interviewing him, I watched a couple of his press conferences from his FIU season, and I was basically sold based on that. He gave substantive, thoughtful answers shortly after the game. His instant command of what had just occurred was impressive and borderline startling. And he's forthcoming. He knows it's part of his job to communicate to the press and fans. After enduring a Viking season full of non-answers and obfuscation from Coach Frazier, this is a very welcome change.

I agree he has an advanced degree in coach-speak. For the post privacy generation, it's an important quality to have. If Vince Lombardi was coaching today he would be flooded with litigation.

Postgame Quotes (gophersports)
Michigan Head Coach John Beilein

Opening Statement….
"Minnesota really has a good team. That back court is not a joke; they’re really a good team. I like what Richard is doing with them. They’re tough to guard. We’re thrilled we were able to make enough shots and get guys off the bench and make enough shots to come away with the win.”

On Glenn Robinson III’s status after injury...
"He has some injury with his ankle; I’m not sure what it is. He tried to run down in the hallway during the media time out, he couldn’t do it, so why make it worse”

On using his bench more with Robinson out…
“It says a lot about what our coaching staff really preaches every day is that everybody has to be ready all the time. The tenth and eleventh guy can be in any of these games.”

Coach-speak is a necessity but I very seldom have an interest in listening to it. Having said that Pitino is a good listen. He is on ESPN1500 every Monday for an hour at 6:30 PM. Also good sense of humor.
