bruise heel and possibly plantar fasciitis, Murphy hasn't scratched the surface yet, not playing Buggs was between Charles and him, Sharp is the best walk-on he's worked with.
Here are the quick notes (not verbatim):
• Kevin will get an MRI tomorrow, doctor said it was a heel bruise plus possibly plantar fasciitis. Sounded a little concerned. He landed on it pretty tough. He's a tough kid and said he was in pain.
• Murph was good with 18 rebounds. Good win with a guy going down. We know now, we have a lot of variables going into MKE, we have exams this week, they're a good team, Christmas element.
• On Buggs - There was a lot of reasons he didn't play the last game, but I didn't feel the need to tell you guys. That's between me and Charles. I love that kid, as a kid, he's just a little different during competition. It's just a matter of continuing to grow, he was a redshirt. He understands everything he does. He's really sharp, he knows when he makes a mistake, but needs to react quicker during competition, or react the right way. He responded very well today.
• I wanted our guys to not feel sorry for themselves, and the guys responded to that. It's tough, you can't hide when you lose.
• I was happy with the energy throughout the game, we were cold from the beginning, I don't think we're a great shooting team. We did a good job defending without fouling, we could almost be more aggressive.
• On Dupree - one of his 3's I didn't like. He's a better shooter than he's showing, he's good at driving.
• On keeping Murphy coming off the bench - nothing is indefinite in sports. He's playing really good off the bench, why change? He's one of our best players, but he's playing great off the bench. I don't know if Gas is totally ready. He gives us a lot of energy off the bench. We got him in pretty early. Maybe there's something to be said that he's comfortable coming off the bench. Starting doesn't mean as much to me as it does to Marcus (laughing). He can be a better defensive rebounder. I think he's just scratching the surface, he can really get there. He's got the wingspan, he's got really long arms. He can get a LOT better. On drives, he exposes the ball a lot, he still gets a little lazy on moves, he needs to get better of ducking in and demanding that ball.
• I see Steph playing, and getting in that rotation, I don't look at him like a walk-on, he brings value, he gets deflections, he's a good player. I remember when we got him, we thought he'd bring value to our program. Ahmad, it's just getting quicker.
• We're a little thin in the backcourt to begin with, we signed Jarvis with the hope he'd provide depth there.
• Stephon Sharp - best walk on he's worked with. That's not to take away from other guys. When we got him, he was a legit D1 player.
• On Bo Ryan - I never worked with him, we worked against each other. I saw that notification popped up on my phone. I saw him 3 weeks after he announced, you could tell he was kind of uncertain, like he was leaning that way a bit. We played him 5 times or so, and did beat them once. He recruited guys that fit the ways he wanted to play, he never beat himself, he never fouled, or in his mind, he never fouled, and never turned the ball over. It showed me that you need to hold your guys accountable. The stability he did that with was really impressive, he will be in the hall of fame. He's a good guy, he's a guy I've spoken to a bunch, fun guy to be on the road. I hope he's enjoying retired life, because he's given a lot to this game.
• Murph - he's doing a lot of things that don't have anything to do with coaching. He's just scratching the surface. He plays the 3, 4, and 5, he's willing to do that, he studies, he wants to win. Special kid from a great family, extremely humble and grounded. He'll stay that way, he's not going to change. If he continues to play with that high motor, I think he can be an all-conference player.
