Pitino or Shaka

Pitino. Shaka's style would never work in the B1G. ;)

Pitino. He has embraced the Barn and Minnesota. Wouldn't trade him for anybody.

Have not watched a lot of Shaka and Vcu but seems like Pitino has more fire in him.

Pitino. I personally like his system more than Shaka's. Both are among the best young coaches in the country though.

Shaka, but barely. A year ago this would have been an absurd question.

I think everyone here is delusional, pitino may end up being better, but shaka has proven way more than Pitino has yet, there is a reason why all these top name schools go after shaka year after year, including the gophers. This isn't a knock on pitino like some of you would try to paint it, but lets not put pitino on a pedestal where he has yet to earn it.

Pitino, by a long shot! Dude gets it! This a long term college basketball coach. Teague, hit a home run here. Tubby built a substantial middle of the road B1G team, and Pitino will turn it into a top teir team...if he stays...

I think "delusional" is probably overstating a bit (if people want to feel that way). I would clearly agree that Pitino doesn't have the same accomplishments that Shaka has. But the question was "which coach would you rather have?" Accomplishment isn't the same thing as preference. Tubby is more accomplished than Pitino, but most of us would prefer Pitino.

For me.....I would probably lean Shaka but the gap has closed.

Shaka has accomplished a lot more. I would prefer Shaka.

Shaka is a name every recruit in the country knows, and now put him on big time program and he is going to have a field day recruiting. Sure people know the pitino name, but its not because of our pitino. There is no way you can compare Smart to Tubby, Tubby's time has come and gone, Shaka is just starting. Don't get me wrong, I love pitino and see him doing good things here, but no way I'd take him over Shaka if given the opportunity. Shaka took VCU to a final 4 and has consistently taken his teams into the NCAA tourney. Think about that for a second, Did any of us know who VCU was before Shaka? I think the rest of the nation would laugh their heads off reading this thread.

Before we got Pitino I did want Shaka so I would have to say Shaka. This isn't a knock on Pitino though. I'm happy so far with Pitino and like where our team is headed. He's gonna have to recruit his butt off in the short term to make up for the previous transfers and attrition(Otto) but seems to be up to the task since he brought little dre, malik, Joey in. Once the classes even out we should see even more improvement.

Not arguing, but have you watched Pitino coach? The guy gets it. Perfect mix of arrogance and confidence.

I'm on the same side of the debate as you are. I would take Shaka over Pitino as of right now. But you are arguing "accomplishment" which is not the same thing as "who would you prefer". There would be no debate on "accomplishment" but it is not absurd or delusional to pick Pitino, based on a perceived high ceiling (right or wrong).

How dare you? People that you see here are the same people who praised Smart when he had that run in NCAA and was compared to young Tubby. How quickly things change? They say this becasue they have no way of getting Smart here. If Smart says that he would come here if offered, I bet you 99.99 % of these people will role the red carpet for him and name a few of their kids after him too.

Who's this Tubby? Am I in the wrong thread?

Mods, please do whatever it takes to keep these conversations on topic. Many thanks.

If you had asked this question just after Tubby was fired, knowing pretty much nothing about Richard Pitino, I'd have taken Shaka Smart. If we had hired Shaka Smart, I'd guess most people on the board would say there's no other coach they'd rather have right now than Shaka Smart. I am happy with Pitino, but if you told me I could have Shaka Smart right now, it'd be a tough offer to turn down. Even if we assume the two are equal coaches, Shaka Smart has name recognition and a reputation that Pitino doesn't have yet, outside of being his dad's son, which might enable him to build up our program more quickly than Pitino can.

Anthony Grant says hi. He hasn't done much at Alabama. But he did take VCU to the NCAA's and beat Duke. He was also about 30 minutes away from being Billy Donovan's successor at Florida. Let's not act like VCU was some basketball wasteland until Shaka arrived. It simpy isn't true.

Mods, can we move this into a "All things Shaka thread"? :D

I'll always pick the guy that's here, simply because he choose to be here.

Close call but I really like what pitino is doing! His in game coaching has been great. I like the different adjustments versus different teams. He is young has energy to get recruits he is a go getter. Great hire!

Pitino is greater than Grant. Donovan is not close to retiring. Grant is closer to replacing Donovan, as Pitino is setting up his own legacy here.

Pitino for sure, he is our guy. Shaka is the fashionable pick, but he seems a little more flash than substance compared to Pitino. Both are good coaches, Shaka got a group of players to prove his ability, Pitino is working to get the players. I feel that Pitino is the right guy for the U, he is looking to build his own legacy here at Minnesota. He will not leave as long as we treat him right, he is in one of the premier conferences and he can take the U as high as we wants to go. I think Pitino will have a better career than Shaka.

I hope you're right, but aren't you the same guy who added "if he stays" to a comment about building the program? Richard has done a great job and I hope he stays here a long time, but the poor infrastructure in place at the U and the enticement of more money and an easier place to win has me perpetually worried about him pulling a "Lute Olson" and jumping to an easier place to win consistently. The '15 recruiting class will say a lot about how momentum in the program is perceived.

You are correct

I might have said that. I believe his ability to recruit here will determine his long term viability here. With that being said, I believe he will recruit well here. I am sure we will pay him, therefore he stays here and builds his legacy. This staff will not lose out on recruits by a lack of effort.
