anything.

Here are my post game notes - as always, not verbatim, just typing as they talk.

Richard Pitino honoring the seniors post-game on the court….

• He will go down as one of the best Gophers to ever put on that jersey, Austin Hollins
• He's another guy, these 4 guys have been so much fun to coach, Oto made a tough decision because he was in so much pain, he'll be a great coach one day, he's going to hang around next year so you see him, Oto. If anyone has a job they can offer him over the summer, he wants to earn some extra money and work.
• You are the best fans in the world, I love you guys - Oto
• I appreciate him so much, I maybe should have played him more, he's going to have a great career hopefully overseas, Maverick.
• This next guys, I could spend about 10 minutes making fun of but I'm not going to do it. When I got the job, Malik said he wanted to come with us, and we told him he had to be patient. He's showed unbelievable loyalty to us and this University. He never saw a shot he didn't like, Malik Smith.

Mo Walker
It's tough to beat a team so many times in a row, we need to take this week to get better offensively and defensively.*

Austin Hollins
It's bitter sweet. It felt great getting the win, and seeing Mav get a career high.
My family has been my biggest support system
It felt good, just being persistence and not giving up
On the best thing this team has going for them - I think our confidence, our confidence is really high. I think guys know that we can go in and win this thing.
It was great seeing guys that I went in w like Mav have w career game
Sid: How good can the #Gophers be without you next year? Austin: They can be as good as they wanna be.
On playing PSU for the 3rd time - I don't think it's a help or hindrance, it's tough to beat a team 3 times in a row

Malik Smith
(On being here only one year) I think I was a big part of the system, being that I already played it last year
On how many games they'll have to win to get to the Dance: I'm not sure how that works, it's too confusing. I'll give Joe Lunardi a call tonight (joking).

DeAndre Mathieu
We took care of the ball today, that's why we got such a big lead
I don't really follow anything about the tournament, I just know if you win, you get in.
He just told us we were fine, everyone makes runs in this league, and it was our turn next.
On the importance of Austin Hollins - Austin is going to carry us, we go as far as he goes.*

Maverick Ahanmisi
It feels good, I've had fun here for 4 years, it was a fun experience going out like that. I'm going to miss the barn, I had to hold back some tears.*

Oto Osenieks
It was really sad for me, kind of disappointed because I didn't get to play. It really meant a lot to me that Coach Pitino put me in today.
Next year, he said I could do video coordinator stuff. I'll be helping at practice...
On who's decision it was to stop playing - It was mostly my decision, I was talking to a lot of people, and it would be tough to play at this level with this knee.
It was really sad and emotional for me to say goodbye, it was tough not to cry.
I think we're taking a medical leave. I'll still be on scholarship next year, just not playing.*

Richard Pitino:
• Obviously, a good win for us. It was tough having 7 days off this time of year, the guys are so eager to get on the court. The best thing you've got to do is play. Mentally, more than anything, I think the guys handled business. They were sick of seeing me, and I may have been sick of seeing them too. We play them again on Thursday, and one of the hardest things to do is beat a team 3 times
• The reason why we announced is because we wanted to honor him tonight. If we wouldn't of had that opportunity, we would have waited. I wanted him to have his opportunity to get a jersey, speak to the crowd. I didn't want to show up PSU in anyway, but I wanted to find a way to get him on the court. He's a really good kid. Hopefully he has a career in coaching, he'll be with us next year if he gets his medical.
• We've always done that (speaking after the game) - I always thought it was great for these guys, they'll never forget it. IT's good for them, to throw them out in front of 10, 12K. These are memories they'll remember for the rest of their lives.
• It was hard. We wrestled with do we start them or not? Mav wants to play, he doesn't want to start and being subbed out after 30 seconds. Malik wants to play. Mav played 13 minutes, he took advantage of every minute because he shot it 8 times (laughing). I've got a lot of regrets this year, but I need to find him more minutes, somehow somewhere.
• On Mo Walker - He comes in, he demands the ball, and our guys look for him. He's become a good FT shooter too. He's a big target, I think he's going to have a huge off-season this year. He's going to get in unbelievable shape, I think he's going to be one of the better bigs in the conference. He lost 60, it's hard to do, it wasn't me, he deserves the credit. I didn't need to stay on him every day, it wasn't an issue. He enjoys feeling good about himself.
• That Purdue game comes to mind, we were up 19 and gave up the lead. It's them growing. We're old, but we're not all that experienced. Mathieu was at a JUCO, Mo hardly played, Joey was in the Missouri valley. I think we handled their run pretty well today.
• I think they're really good, I think Pat does a great job, he took over a really difficult situation. He's a great recruiter, he's great coach. They played WI tough, won against OSU, we continue to have respect for him.
• We played 3 games (at FIU in the conf. tourney last year), that was a lesson for me as a young HC, we had to win the tourney, I don't know if we have to win this to go to the NCAA. Maui taught me a lot too. We hopefully will play 4 games in 4 nights.
• Austin has been playing really well in practice too. He works so hard every single day. There were no adjustments that we made. It's huge to have him playing like this.
• We need to cut down on the TO's, that's always been our issue. When we don’t' turn it over, we're pretty hard to guard.
• Andre Hollins was just sitting for fouls
• I think it's definitely mental, more than anything. They need to understand that it's a very well coached group. We'll fix whatever mistakes we can make. We have never won a BT championship. I had no idea that it only has gone on since 1998, I thought they had them for like 100 years.
• I think when you get this far, there aren't many secrets anymore. I put in a lot of stuff early, but don't put in a lot of new stuff anymore.

Minnesota Head Coach Pitino Quotes

Opening Statement...
"This is a great win for us tonight. It was a tough to have seven days off this time of year. The guys were so eager to get out on the court when all of these other games were going on. The best thing for us was to play a game, so it was mentally difficult for us to have to wait seven days between games. Our team took care of business tonight and I was happy with the way we started tonight. Penn State had a nice run of points, so we had to calm ourselves down. It's a good win for us and we have to get ready to go to play them again on Thursday. One of the hardest things to do is to beat a team three times, so we need to prepare for that.

On playing Oto Osenieks at the end of the game...
"It was a tricky situation because he is seeking a medical, yet we still wanted to honor him tonight. If we didn't have the opportunity that we had at the end of the game, I would have waited and we would have worked with him in the offseason. He's a great kid and a great representative of the university, so I wanted him to have his opportunity to get a jersey and speak with the crowd. He was able to get into the game for a little bit, which was a good way for us to let him see some, but I also didn't want to show up Penn State. I wanted to find a way to get him on the court someway. He is a great player and we hope he has a career in coaching which is what he hopes to do after he graduates. He'll be with us next year and work with us day in and day out."

On having the seniors talk with the crowd after the game...
"When I was at Louisville we would ask the seniors to speak on senior day. I thought it was a great way for these guys to create lasting memories. They'll never forget their chance to speak in front of 10 thousand people. More than anything it's great for them to say thank you because these college years create memories that they will remember for the rest of their lives."
On deciding when to play Maverick and Malik...
"It was difficult because we wrestled with the choice of whether to start them. Maverick wants to play; he doesn't want to start the game and then get subbed out after 30 seconds. He's a better player than that. Malik is the same way, so I wanted to play them and get them good time on the court. I was glad that Maverick played 13 minutes and took advantage of every moment. I'm happy for him, he's a great kid, and I need to find him more minutes as we move forward. Hopefully we'll have a few more games to give him that opportunity."

On Mo Walker establishing himself as a post player...
Mo does a great job of coming in and demanding the ball. Our guys look for him and look for chances to get him the ball. He's become a solid free throw shooter as well. His confidence has really improved which I believe has been instrumental in his success.

Junior Mo Walker

On halftime adjustments…
“At halftime coach (Pitino) said we weren’t playing as aggressive as we could have been. He wanted us to get to 80, so we picked it up a little bit in the second half.”

On playing Penn State again on Thursday in the B1G Tournament…
“It’s tough to beat a team three times in a row. We got them at their spot and now we got them at home so it’s going to be challenging to get them a third time in the BIG Tournament. We have to take this week and get better offensively and defensively.”

What the team takes away from today’s game….
”It was a good, solid win. We had players stepping up off the bench, Maverick (Ahanmisi) had a good game today. We’re all just playing well right now, but we have to keep it up, keep up the intensity on defense.”

Junior Center Eliott Eliason

On whether Penn State had more interest in Thursday’s upcoming game than today’s….
“They (Penn State) wanted both games, they know how much more the B1G Tournament means to them in the long run because they need to make a run in (the tournament) and win to make the (NCAA) Tournament. It’s going to be big for them on Thursday.”

On Thursday’s game being held on a neutral court….
“We had a lot of emotion today, being at home. That helped us. But on a neutral floor it’s going to be a lot tougher, we’re not going to half that (fan support).”

Senior Guard Austin Hollins

On what this team is taking into the B1G Tournament…
“Our confidence is really high and guys are playing at a high level. Our guys really believe that we can go in and win this thing. We want to make the NCAA Tournament, but our mindset is starting the B1G tournament right on Thursday with Penn State.”

On his last home game on ‘senior day’….
“It was bitter-sweet, but it’ll be a day that I’ll always remember. It was great seeing some guys that I came in with, like Maverick, have a good game, but definitely a bitter-sweet moment.”

On the team maturing throughout the season….
“It’s a long season. At this point, we have grown. We’ve grown a lot over the course of the season, we’re improving in all areas, but there’s still room for improvement. We’re going to work hard this week and get ready for the B1G Tournament.”

Penn State Head Coach Patrick Chambers

On the tough start for Penn State...
“(Minnesota) had a week off and they had fresh legs. It was senior night and they were playing for the NCAA tournament. I think that is what you saw in the first 10 minutes there. We could not recover. You can’t give a team like Minnesota a 20-point lead and expect to come back. We did a nice job getting the lead to single digits, but I think we ran out of gas.”

On putting up a fight towards the end of the game
“From the eight-minute mark of the first half to the 10-minute mark in the second half, I thought we really competed hard. We have to start out the game that way when you are playing a desperate team like Minnesota.”

On playing Minnesota on Thursday in the Big Ten Tournament
“Tomorrow is going to be about Penn State. We will worry about Minnesota on Wednesday. We just have to pick up the pieces, regain our confidence, and do a better job moving the basketball. We were playing great defense up until today and I knew if (Minnesota) got into the seventies it would not be a good outcome for us. They got 81 points.”

The "hard to beat a team 3 times in a row" is one of the dumbest cliches out there, that has absolutely zero statistical data to prove it

I love this guy.

It was really funny - then he asked why the Big 10 didn't have a tourney before that. He was dumbfounded that it hadn't been around for that long.

The "hard to beat a team 3 times in a row" is one of the dumbest cliches out there, that has absolutely zero statistical data to prove it

I'm sure there is some data to show, but I'm too lazy to dig it up! After a quick Google search, all I could find was NFL references, like this one:

Ok, I actually just got stats on this...because what else would I be doing at 2am? Lol.

From 1998-2013, in Big Ten Tournament history, the team that went 2-0 in the regular season series wins 67.3 percent of the time (37-18) in the 3rd meeting. The breakdown is: 12-4 in first round, 11-9 in quarterfinals, 9-5 in semifinals and 5-0 in title games.

As far as teams that meet in the regular season finale, and then play in the B1G tournament opener, the team that won finale is 6-5 in tournament.

So, even though it is tough, Pitino was actually incorrect on this one, we actually statistically have a better chance of winning the 3rd meeting.

I think your logic is a little shaky. What was the probability of going 2-0 ? Winning just the first game??

But, if he would have said it's hard to beat a team twice in 5 days he would have been right.

But... but our Coach said it. It must be true

My theory is that he's learned how his team works mentally, and he's playing to that. This group plays better when challenged, so he's not afraid to put this out there as a big challenge.

Are you kidding? It's not logic, it's pure stats. 12-4 is what has happened in the past for the 1st game on the 3rd meeting.

But, if he would have said it's hard to beat a team twice in 5 days he would have been right.

6-5 are the chances, so 54%. That's close to half...I wouldn't say that's hard, that's average.

I guess it depends on the way you look at it. Yes it is one game, and we are asking the question after the first two games have been played. But I think the way many speak of this is that it's difficult to beat someone three times in one season because the probabilities compound.

My question to you was trying to point out that to prove/disprove this statement you would need to compare the probability of:

Winning game one

To

Winning game one and game two

To

Winning game one, and game two, and game three

In this version of the numbers, it would be very difficult for someone to convince me that it's easier to beat an opponent the 3 times in one season compared to twice or one time.

I always say, numbers don't like, we lie about numbers. Either way we want to spin it there is a way to argue it guess.

Dude, you are making this way too complicated. Someone asked the statistics of winning a 3rd game and sweeping them, in the BTT. I gave you results of a team doing that since the beginning of the Big 10 tourney. That's all.

As we all know from watching the Big 10 this year, anything can happen on any given day. I just showed you that it's more likely for that team to win the 3rd meeting. And quite honestly, nothing matters if we don't beat PSU. One game at a time...

It's way more mental than it is statistical.
Gopher Lady's results suggest otherwise, however I would tend to agree that there is a mental piece to it.

Probability and statistics shows that past results have absolutely no bearing on an upcoming event. Each event is on it's own. We play the upcoming game, and let past results go to sleep.

Yup - We are all on the same page today guys. Lets bury this one.

I think we are arguing two different things. GopherLady has accurately cited the relevant statistic for the situation the Gophers are facing: of the times where a team who has already won two games gets a chance in the BTT to go 3-0, how often do they convert on it? That is where the Gophers are now, and given her numbers, it suggests that we have a strong opportunity to do it.

Another question might be "if we assume that we will meet up with a given team twice in the regular season and again in the BTT, what are our chances of winning all three?" That number would be much lower because you aren't already sitting on the first two wins. That would also be irrelevant to the Gophers' current situation, because we already have banked two wins against PSU, so all that matters is given that, will we get number 3?

Shouldn't you be packing? I understand that you're going somewhere a bit warmer than Indy.

Haha...packing will happen after I finish work, errands, bank, gym, laundry, and my to-do list. So like, 2am :)

Have fun, and tell our mutual friend Jeff from the T'Wolves to break open his first communion money and buy you a cocktail.

Lol! Will do - I can't believe we're going to be there at the same time. I hope to see him, great guy.

Right, its just conditional probability. Consider flipping a coin three times. The odds of getting three heads are 1 in 8. But if you've already got two heads your odds of getting the third are 50%. The gophers have already got two heads.
