As the beginning of the college basketball season gets closer and closer, I’m sure everyone’s curiosity meter is about to explode when it comes to what exactly to expect from the 2015-16 Gophers basketball team.

To this point the best sample we have is the University of Minnesota’s foreign tour to Spain over the summer, which included four exhibition games from Aug. 10-20.

The opponents don’t really matter, but I thought it was interesting to see how certain players performed, especially considering this team has an entirely different identity with seniors Andre Hollins, Dre Mathieu and Mo Walker gone.

It's nice to get these stats, but I wish we could have seen them sooner. I was a bit dissapointed of the Spain trip coverage. How hard is it to bring an HD camera along and give us some highlight clips?

As far as the stats go, it's nice to see Dorsey, Mcbrayer, and Murphy as 3 of the top 6 scorers. If we are to overachieve this season, that's exactly what we are going to need from them.
 

Agreed. Pretty weird to see this article pop up now. Somewhat interesting, nonetheless. Encouraging numbers from Murphy all around. I liked seeing how many times he and Gas got to the line. Disappointed in the rebounding numbers from Gas and King, not that any of this really matters.

Agree, they did a horse**** job for the fans on that one.

What in his past performance raised your expectations for a significant increase in King's rebound numbers? He's just not that kind of player. By advanced stats, King was the second worst rebounder of the regulars in 33 games last year (surpassing only 5'9" Mathieu). However, he was essentially tied for the lead in all around shooting performance and that is what will keep him on the floor as much as possible.
 

Marquette is my other college team and they did a euro trip this summer as well. Their coverage was totally different from Minnesota's. They had highlights of every game and then at the end of the trip they had individual player highlight videos as well. I was kind of expecting that from the U.

That and he understands team defense. There are guys who play big minutes because of this skill. It often leaves the fans wondering why they're on the court, but there they are every year. Otto & Joey come to mind right away.

As arguably Oto's #1 fan over the years, you'd think you would have been able to pick up on the fact he only has one "t" in his first name.

True. Thank you for mentioning that. Joey is one of the team' more valuable players right now for a number of reasons despite his weak rebounding. I just hope Bakary heals quickly, and more importantly, completely.
 


The fact that there's nowhere to go but up, he's bigger now, more experienced, and has been told he needs to improve that area of his game because it's really been hurting us. Plus now he's probably our biggest leader and it looks pretty bad if you're playing PF and getting as few rebounds as he is when pure effort could give him more rebounds than he's gotten. Don't get me wrong, he doesn't have the size or athletic ability to become an even average rebounder, but he can certainly do better than he has. Do you disagree?

Notice I was referring to 'ppg' and rebounding stats for Gas...

If he can do 5ppg and 4rpg in 10-15mpg a game this year I would be happy.

I don't disagree and he should be a better rebounder, at least on the defensive end, but he hasn't shown a tenacity at blocking out and aggressively going for the board in the past. On the offensive end, he's too good of a shooter to play too close to the basket and, despite the jokes about his penchant for fakes, those fakes have actually been pretty effective in getting him free throw attempts.
 

Gotcha. Agree with all of that. Didn't catch you said ppg in the other post--makes more sense now.
