per Marcus:

Gophers men's basketball coach Richard Pitino addressed his new contract and raise for the first time publicly Monday in a radio interview, saying he agreed with criticism that he didn't deserve that yet.

The University of Minnesota announced last week a $400,000 raise and two-year extension through the 2020-21 season for Pitino, whose team went 18-14 last season and didn't reach the postseason.

"I certainly understand it -- 100 percent," Pitino said on KFXN-FM. "Where (former Minnesota athletics director) Norwood (Teague) and I spoke was after my first year. I said, 'Norwood, we need to ride this momentum,' because I understood that we were a long ways away from where we want to get to. So the people who are saying, he's 6-12 why is he getting a raise? I get it...I do understand that. I'm the first person to say I haven't accomplished anything."

Go Gophers!!

I like this guy more all the time.

I will like him a lot more when he starts winning games in the Big Ten and especially against Wisconsin. He talks the talk know it is time to walk the walk - Win baby Win! I want him to have a much better record than his current 61-42 record (14-22 in the Big Ten). The third year as the coach should show us where he is bringing the program. I wish Gopher basketball was relevant on a national stage!

I just hope he doesn't bolt at the first chance if he starts to win.

That's always been my concern about him. I think he's bright as hell and excellent with the media. It looks like he's matured on the sideline in terms of not getting in his players' faces all of the time. I'm not sure if he can recruit difference makers or get the best out of what he has in the way that Kill seems to do it and I don't think he has a long view of this job.
