PiPress: O-Line coach could be hired sooner

A quick look at his biography, success at lower levels including FCS, four years at Winona St, played and was a student then grad assistant at Iowa.http://goleathernecks.com/coaches.aspx?path=football&rc=259 He knows MN, worked his way up at lower levels, is available, he looks like a good fit. It could be pure conjecture or the could be something to it.

Yeah, but this is the real key piece of information from his bio:

Despite using six different starting line-ups along the front five (mainly due to injuries), the offense registered eight 100-yard rushing efforts during the 2013 season and nearly scored as many points as the previous two seasons combined.

Now I know why they hired him...

per Marcus:

“I think we will get (offensive line coach) done right around the holidays and before the convention,” Clayes said on WCCO-AM.

Claeys has said that in an ideal world, the offensive coordinator would also be the quarterbacks coach, which was vacated by Jim Zebrowski on Nov. 29.

“You hate to put yourself in there, but I’ve been putting a lot of work into (offensive line coaches) and have talked to a lot of people and making sure that it gets narrowed down,” Claeys told ‘CCO. “I want to make sure that we find the best football coach possible and No. 2 is that that person is a good person and fits in with the staff also, so we all get along. It’s all about making our kids better.”

Bob Nielson knows his football. If he is the hire, I'm inclined to like it on that basis alone.

Coach Blazek certainly has the kind of credentials to fit in with the present Gophers staff, he makes more sense as an O-line candidate, than a lot of names that have been mentioned for Offensive Coordinator.

He just signed with USD as their head coach making about $250k. A job that with quick success could lead to another jump up. Doubt he is coming here for an O-Line position

I have a deep source embedded in the program...either that or a bunch of Gopher coaches and players just started following him on Twitter within the past day.

Just checked him on Twitter, Quinn Oselund, Trystan Castillo, Garrison Wright and Coach Anderson
started following him. Coincidence? Maybe, but odd.

He has a pretty good track record, and as much as it pains to say, if he was a Grad Asst at a college
(Iowa) that produces a lot of NFL OL, then i'm ok with that.

Blazek was Nielson's OL coach at WIU.

Kill praised Blazek specifically before the MN-WIU game: “Bob’s background and knowing Bob, and what they’ve done in the past and you can always watch the film and see his blueprint on what he’s doing at Western Illinois,” said Kill. “They’re a very, very good zone team and they’ve got a very good offensive line coach in A.J. Blazek, who played at the University of Iowa, who was an excellent player, who’s also an excellent coach. You’re going to get a dose of the zone and they’re very good at it and they execute it. They’ve got a big back and that’s what he does.”

Maybe Claeys has liked him for awhile.

Same news tweeted by Dougie

"Darren Wolfson ‏@DWolfsonKSTP 47m47 minutes ago

.@CoachBlaz, who interviewed for the Concordia-St. Paul head coaching job (didn't get it), is a name to watch for the #Gophers O-Line job."

Don't know if this has been mentioned, but Blazek is a Kansas boy. Grew up there and went to HS in a small Kansas town.

If Blazek is the top candidate, then that is another strong indicator that the Gophers are going to a zone blocking scheme for next year. All the tea leaves seem to be pointing in that direction, which may also be an underlying reason for some of the recruiting decisions (de-commits, JUCO signings and possible transfers). Sounds like Claeys is bringing in OL to run a new scheme.

Finally, the jet sweep!

Since the buzz around Blazek seems to be at least partially due to Twitter, it's probably equally relevant that he just started following Rutgers Head Coach Chris Ash, the official Rutgers Football account, and the official student section of Rutgers athletics.

There could possibly be more than one reason Coach Blazek would follow Rutgers. A thought that's been in the back of my mind what about Norries Wilson as OC? It's something to think about.
