per Marcus:

“I think we will get (offensive line coach) done right around the holidays and before the convention,” Clayes said on WCCO-AM.

Claeys has said that in an ideal world, the offensive coordinator would also be the quarterbacks coach, which was vacated by Jim Zebrowski on Nov. 29.

“You hate to put yourself in there, but I’ve been putting a lot of work into (offensive line coaches) and have talked to a lot of people and making sure that it gets narrowed down,” Claeys told ‘CCO. “I want to make sure that we find the best football coach possible and No. 2 is that that person is a good person and fits in with the staff also, so we all get along. It’s all about making our kids better.”

See my post on point No.2 I made a few weeks back.

"I am going to shed some light on this topic from what I know...Limegrover was not well liked from what I was told by a direct source. My source has a direct source to the team which I am 100% confident is true. A few weeks back after Kill retired I asked this person since I knew he was connected directly about what he knew about the Kill retirement and he stated that they all really liked playing for Kill and was difficult to see him have to go. In the same instance he said to me "Limegrover is an ass, really arrogant and cocky and players didn't like him." When the news hit about the Limey and Zeb getting fired my source said that they had spoken to his source and stated " he was glad he was gone"

This tells me a lot, it first tells me that TC was well aware of this and needed to do something about I. Hard to get your players to play as hard as they can and coach them up when they don't respect the OC/OL coach. TC also stated that he is keeping 80% of the offense in tact, Limegrover easily could have switched the offense up the way TC wanted it. So the move to get rid of Limey wasn't about X & 0s it was about getting a better culture for everyone involved. Its obvious Kill tolerated it but TC wasn't going to let it go on anymore. Limey was putting on a good recruiting face but once the kids were on the team he really rubbed them the wrong way. I am willing to bet when the U hired TC this was discussed and the U knew the contracts were not going to get renewed. No way TC pulls that move over the U, you don't go in to the negotiations and say "Hey hire me nothing is changing I promise, we need to keep the continuity of the coaching staff" and then go fire the OC/OL coach and QB coach. Which is likely why Limey said he had no clue this was going to happen and thought it better for all parties involved that he decline an interview.

Just my thoughts..."

That "direct source" should have been fired immediately, or I would like to see them fired now.

Anyone that would talk to someone about such things, even in confidence, needs to go. Near professional treason.

That said, you can't "switch up" an offense with a few games to go. Suicide.

Obviously, they talked to a blabber. I hate this BS.

That shows how far off base you are in assuming it is/was a staff member. SMH

Seems obvious the source is a player. News flash, players sometimes bitch about their coaches. News flash #2, employees of every organization bitch about their superiors/management. It's always amazing to me this is a surprise Or insulting to management. Then again, some people are not self-aware or have delusions of grandeur.

Sounds reasonable to me.

So the OC will not be involved in hiring ANY of his assistants. Hmmm

Lol. You say so much **** that is so off base, and flat out wrong.

Which would beg the question....Why did Kill put up with the problem? It wasn't like Limy was the country's best OC.

So many schools have already hired new offensive coordinators this offseason. It is a bit strange to me that Claeys is waiting to make that hire until after the bowl game...unless he already knows who he is going to hire and this is some sort of timing issue in regards to that persons current contract

St. Thomas still has a game this Friday.

I agree with you, he already knows who he is hiring.

Wouldn't the new OC want say in his staff? He is already inheriting a RB, WR, and TE coach. Now a OL coach? Hope they are all on the same page. I'm surprised he isn't waiting to get an OC and then fill the O staff together.

When we hired kill, I remember a lot of Northern fans saying they were glad to be rid of Limegrover, but they loved the rest of the staff. I didn't put much stock in it because of the way their offense dominated us, but over time it has made sense.

Interesting. I don't remember that though.

It sounds like Claeys has a fairly strong idea of the type of offense he wants to run - so presumably, he is targeting OC candidates who have run that type of offense in the past.

If I remember correctly, when he let Limegrover go, Claeys said it wasn't going to a be a complete overhaul of the offense, but more of a change in philosophy, including something about putting playmakers in a position to make plays.

So, I suspect that whoever Claeys hires as OC is going to have to take the job on the condition that he adheres to Claeys' philosophy - and inherits the rest of the remaining offensive staff.

Depends on the guy but they want some sort of fluid transition here, and I'm not sure an OC who gets hired at MN is going to be able to go out and just get his pick of the litter for line coaches and etc.... and in the end the HC makes the call, so not that weird.

Whether true or not, where there's smoke there may be fire. The offensive staff developed little talent and continued to make head scratching decisions. Max Williams bolted as soon as he was eligible, head scratching red-shirts pulled, OL underachieving, QB's slow to develop, etc. etc. The defense seemed so much more organized and from recruiting to playing time. Claeys may have noticed the same issues and decided the players on offense needed a fresh start.

Could also be he wants people who the players already know and are comfortable with to coach them for the bowl game. Think about it as a player, new guy comes in and you have less than two weeks to get to know him as a coach and play under him before an actual game? Not to mention the time needed for the rest of the offensive staff to get to know him and get comfortable coaching together. Better that that stuff happens during spring ball and summer practices. Add in some getting to know the coach out of practice during the summer as well, and by the time an actual game comes around most if not all the kinks and newness of the coach will be long gone.

Honestly, position coaches are year to year anyway, so if the new OC comes in and doesn't like someone they can dump them next year. Based on timing it makes more sense to stick with the bulk of the coaches and deal with the rest next year.

The popularity of position coaches with players is totally irrelevant.

Good coaches often come close to being hated.

Limey was always a class act in public. As a coach, he was not very good at his job.

The gophers out gained northern Illinois in the game by more than 50 yards.
Not saying they didn't run all over the gophers, just saying many have selective memory of that game.

Too bad all those yards resulted mostly in field goal attempts.

Watching NIU rush for 10.6 yards per carry will do that.

I don't know that I have a selective memory, I was at the game and we couldn't stop them.
Northern Illinois ATT YDS TD AVG
Chad Spann 15 223 2 14.9
Cameron Bell 3 36 0 12.0
Ricky Crider 2 33 0 16.5

Feel like my memory was pretty good. Guessing we dominated time of possession, but when they had the ball, as I said, their offense dominated us.
