per Greder:
Gophers linebackers coach Mike Sherels was nominated Wednesday for the Courage Award presented by the Orange Bowl and the Football Writers Association of America.
Sherels, a former Gophers player from Rochester, has overcome a life-threatening intestinal illness that required multiple surgeries to remove more than 18 feet of his small intestine. He lost 50 pounds and cannot eat solid foods.
After a leave of absence, Sherels, 32, returned to his coaching position full-time before the Oct. 8 game against Iowa.
