The punt team is often considered the most crucial of the four special teams units because the punt could be blocked, it could be shanked or it could be converted into a big return — all huge swings in field position.

Starting tailback Rodney Smith has been practicing with the first punt team.

“Special teams are a big thing here; they’re a priority here,” Smith said. “I think it definitely shows my skill set and makes me more marketable for the next level.”

With fellow standout running back Shannon Brooks expected to be out for Thursday’s opener against Oregon State, coach Tracy Claeys said Smith might not be on the punt team come game time.

“I don’t know if he’s going to start on the punt team or not,” Claeys said. “I’m a little bit more trying to keep as many starters off of them as you can.”
