PiPress: Early signing period could ease decommitments, Jerry Kill says

Gophers football coach Jerry Kill says college programs will continue to try to get players to rescind on their commitments to other schools until the NCAA institutes an early signing period.

Currently, national signing day, which was Wednesday this year, is the only time when recruits can officially commit to college programs. An early signing period, possibly in August, could help abate the decommitment game, Kill believes.

"I don't know how many times in the Big Ten there are flip-flops," Kill said. "There is nothing you can do about it. Everyone is trying to compete to keep their jobs. I think until they have an early signing day, you are going to see that because then it's a little harder to do that."

Why should we make kids who already have to make earlier decisions than the general population of the senior class make even earlier decisions so that millionaire coaches can work less?

Secondly, the recruiting process already works against players that dont bloom until their senior year. An early signing period would only enhance that effect.

I'm sure the early signing period in December will work against kids who bloomed their senior year (if the blooming happens in hockey season), but otherwise since every other fall football team is long done by then, guess it won't matter.

Typically Jerry doesn't have any recruits in August. So that would require an earlier camp and BBQ
based on his present best strategies. August seems too early? Dec 1 makes more sense.

The general population decision day is May 1.
I would argue the national signing day should be moved to May 1 before it should be moved to Dec 1
