Picture of Gophers red, white and blue "M" helmet decal for Saturday's game

All kinds of people get wounded in their work. Construction workers for ex. How about all the children who are sexually abused every year. Let's honor them. Plus, this decal is UGLY. I was going to attend but now I'm staying home.

Good, in fact, just stay out of TCFBS forever and become a NDSU and becky fan. You're unwanted here. Goodbye.

So much of this stuff is around recruiting. Every week we see a video of a teams Halloween gimmick or some coach dancing in the locker room. Maybe Joe Blow will come here to play if we can get our coaching staff to do a dance.

We've reached the A.D.D. Generation of recruiting sadly...

You need to dial it back. Did you fight for the right for every person to speak their mind, or not? What were you fighting for? Call them pacifists, sissies, whatever. I'm a vet , I love this messy country with all it's freedoms that piss everybody off. We need to learn to respect other viewpoints, b/c sometimes there is some wisdom in there. Not everybody wants the military jammed in their faces every way they turn. I'm a vet and i agree it gets taken a little far sometime and respect for the flag/military would somehow be better if it was more organic and not an obvious marketing move. So what?

Thank you.

I'm shocked and appalled that there are so many classless Gopher fans on here. I was really hoping that a winning football team
would cause all the whiney a$$ cry babies that call themselves gopher fans to check their pissing and moaning at the door, but to piss and
moan about the Gophers using an American Flag pattern on their helmets for ONE game as a show of honor to our troops makes me embarrassed
of you all. I'm not calling any of you un-american, i'm just simply calling you all d*bags for wasting yours and everyone's time to complain
(of all things) about this. Tell you what, don't like it, cheer for the Nittany Lions this weekend, or become Vadger fans. No one wants you around
anymore.

Completely humiliating.

And before some geek wants to bring it up, I am a combat veteran of 3 tours of duty, I don't need things like this to feel honor, I don't
need people to walk up to me and thank me for my service, I know what i've done for my country....but it never feels bad when someone
acknowledges what i've done for this nation. This is one of those small things that makes you feel good.

WE are having an adult conversation about the exploitation of causes during college and pro events.

YOU are the guy calling us all classless d*bags for having said adult conversation.

I think it might be you that is humiliating.

I'm getting tired of the parachuting in of guys carting American flags on the opener. Carry in the U of M flag. The military DOES NOT belong on the football field. We honor America with the National Anthem. You want to get all hyped up over the military? Watch the Army- Navy game.

and why is it an American Flag on the moon, why not a U of M Flag? amirite?

What are you fashion police? You were going to the game but now you won't because of a uniform? You sound like a great fan! I personally don't enjoy attending games anymore but if I were to go to a game a teams uniform wouldn't keep me from attending.

So, you are really staying home because of a decal on a helmet? That seems pretty adult of you.

I'm just surprised by everyone's reaction to this. It's a small helmet decal that will barely be seen from the stands. I don't consider that even close to being jammed in our faces. What Northwestern is doing is different. What the NFL does with the pink (lasts a month) is different. Oregon, same thing.

The Gophers have done three things so far: pink for cancer, purple for epilepsy, and now this. All three have been very subtle if you ask me.

It's like staying home because the uniforms are not the color combination you want.

That's what i was thinking too. Didn't even think that was the "flag" on there, just and artist's representation of the Stars and Stripes. Have no problem with the arguments. Hell, it's an interent board, and this is still America right?

G028 of course was over-the-top and out of line but is anybody surprised by that?

Oh, go vote for Lindsey and Kyle. Nobody should be pissed about them should they?

I can't speak for all of us aging Americans, but it's more the medium and the pervasiveness than anything else. More empty symbolism. I don't react strongly to this one way or another, but perhaps a better way to honor veterans would be to sell a special t-shirt or something with the proceeds going to medical services for veterans. A decal on a helmet doesn't accomplish a whole lot except make people "feel good."

It's marketing plain and simple.

What does the moon have to do with football?

I don't think any flags were launched from Cape Kaler.:cool02:

I was trying to out-absurd the guy I quoted. My thoughts on the matter are....don't care one way or the other (not a great look though).

I don't think it's the helmet decal, or even the Gophers per se. What I think is clear is that the topic has touched a nerve of fandom starting to feel exploited by gestures that don't do all that much good, and have reached the point where they start to come across as little more than bald-faced self-aggrandizement of the organizations. Seems pretty clear that the sum total is starting to repulse a fair number of fans. Sports marketing professionals take note.

Edit: I think staying home because of the decal is ridiculous. And I roll my eyes at all these things. I'm pretty cynical.

I agree that seems excessive. You're really going to skip out on the opportunity to see the Gophers pick up their eighth win for the first time since 2003 because of a helmet decal?

This is probably the most audacious uniform alteration we've seen from the Gophers in the last five years or more. I mean seriously we don't even really do throwbacks or any sort of funky alternate uniforms. At least you guys can take comfort in the fact that we aren't completely abandoning our school colors for all-out America f*** yeah uniforms like Northwestern. It's not like we have a history of doing this sort of thing.

Really, it's just a helmet decal that is being worn for a single game and then you won't have to look at it anymore. We're not changing the school colors to pink and gold for a month to support breast cancer research.

I can understand where some people might not like that supporting a cause seems to be more of a marketing ploy than genuine goodwill, but this doesn't seem excessive to me and I really doubt it's gonna be making the U a ton or money or anything. I'm just a little surprised with the level of outrage and disgust in this thread for what seems to me like a fairly minor thing.

My guess is - A) he wasn't coming in the first place, or 2) he is coming anyway but was being over the top. But I could be wrong because, III) he is kind of a dbag.

I'm assuming the helmets will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to some charity. If not, then you are right.

Minor League baseball teams do a bunch of special jerseys that are auctioned off to benefit a charity. Sure they're trying to get more people in the stands and make more money. Sure it makes them look good in the eyes of the public. But as long as it isn't disrespectful to most people, and everyone wins (good marketing for team, organization makes money and gains awareness for their cause, and fans can purchase some cool stuff), I don't see a big problem with it.

Like I said before, there are certainly some companies that jump on the pink or red, white, and blue bandwagon solely for themselves and don't really do much good for the cause. But I don't think that has been done here. Just my opinion though and I understand why some may feel differently.

They're doing something similar to that for Friday Night's Men's Hockey Game.

Leading up to the game, season ticket holders can donate their tickets to the exhibition to Defending The Blue Line families by mailing their tickets directly to Defending The Blue Line - Gopher Tickets, 1206 N. Frontage Rd., Suite B, Hastings, MN 55033 or by e-mailing [email protected]. For those who are unable to attend the game, Gophersports.com will stream the exhibition contest live.

Minnesota will also host an in-game auction and sell autographed pucks throughout the night with all proceeds going towards Defending The Blue Line. Other promotions for the event include competitions for select members of the military during both intermissions, autograph sessions with Hobey Baker Award winners Brian Bonin and Robb Stauber, an equipment drive in the main lobby of Mariucci arena and photos on the ice following the game for all military members in uniform..

I think many people are just tired of all sports(and their uniforms) being bombarded with 'causes' that have become way too common.

I watch/attend a sporting event to view the game. If I wanted to watch a variety show I would watch Ed Sullivan reruns.:cool02:

Why did tradition become a bad thing?

When the costs went up, stadium attendance started to go down and they had to start appealing to people who weren't big time College Football Fans to begin with?

Public relations is a big part of it. Things like this make people feel good about the product, even if they don't go to the games. The next time they're looking for a gift for grandson Johnny, they may get him a Gophers sweatshirt. That's a very simple example but you get the theory behind it.

No matter what you do, someone will not like it. If you stop doing all these things, people will look at you negatively. When you do it, some will get sick of it. The idea is to be somewhere in the middle. Do these things but don't overdue it either.

Agreed. Make it a bit more scarce and it will carry a bit more impact. And make sure there is a tangible benefit as part of it (financial, volunteer effort, etc.). And mix it up. Not pink for a month. Not Pink every year. Not something military every single game.

Lol, you have got to be kidding me.
