Here's the final standings for the 2008-09 Pick Per Day competition and a few comments:

  • rrjack took top honors among the 14 "Steady Selectors" which required making picks in at least 2/3rds of the 134 days for which picks were published.
  • SaturnSweater wins the "close but no cigar" award ... he made 87 picks and had a 0.600 average ... just two more picks and he would have taken the lead.
  • Three of us participated in every pick ... Jike and Gopher in Qatar both had higher winning percentages than yours truly so I end up on the bottom of that grouping.
  • We had over 19 picks per day ... the number of picks dropped a bit as the competition neared the end and tournament picks began.
  • The board averaged 0.508. IIRC, you have to average around .510 to actually make money given the percentage "withheld" by the books. Still, eight of the Steady Selectors were above the .510 cutline.
  • Consensus picks did fairly well this year ... much better than last year and I believe better than when SS ran this a couple years back.
  • Standings for the tournaments picks are summarized in the following post. (I posted the regular season results in this post earlier.)
See you next year!

Thanks Snowman for all your work in putting this detailed PPD series together. It is a great honor to finish on top of the steady pickers on what I consider to be the most knowledgeable Basketball Board on the internet. Next stop Vegas for further fame and riches.

Thanks a lot MNSnowman! This was fun...if I'd have known I'd pick .700, I'd have gone to Vegas! Looking forward to next year.

Thank you very much for doing all of this, Snowman.

Finishing on an 11-1 kick isn't bad. This is my best year doing this since Hodger started it a couple of years ago.

MANY THanks

Snowman - once again, you've outdone yourself. :) Thank you for taking on this beast of a contest. It helps make the winter a bit more interesting around here.

Great work Snowman, you put in a ton of time. I was terrible this year (in not submitting picks enough to make the top bracket, and for placing last in the bottom bracket).

Thanks for all the time you put into this, Snowman. I'll happily take my 12-7 postseason record into the offseason....

I appreciate all the kind words. If I had to decide today, I'll probably run PPD next year. One change might be to exclude games on Monday-Thursday that start late (typically on the west coast). It gets tough to calculate the standings at the late hours.

One thing which helped immeasurably was finding the site that someone recommended for lines. I'm not sure that the site is always as fast as we first thought but their formatting of picks makes including them in a readable format without as much manual/semi-manual manipulation. (I sure am glad I learned some tricks of spreadsheets, data bases and macros back in the day of 286-machines and Lotus 123. Flip that floppy disk to disk three and make sure the drive is locked and loaded.)

Thanks again for doing this as well, Snowman! My .500 record for the season was a pretty amazing achievement for me, considering the fact that I toiled around 10 games below .500 for the better part of the year.

I can also feel pretty good about my 13-6 record in the tournament as well, noting that this record is much better than Spingleton's paltry 12-7 mark.
