Phillip Nelson

I'm going to be shocked if Nelson doesn't end up at UW, which sucks because he ultimately is a better talent than Molberg (sorry northern guys). The UW insiders consider him a "for sure" once they offer him. His family is from Madison, he has only been in MN for 5 years and his dad played for the badgers.

2 QBs. I could go for that.

Just as long as we don't bring in 6 like 2004....

Did we really do that??? Wow, I didn't follow recruiting as much then, but wow. I just looked at the names. I only remember the hutchinson kid cause everyone wanted Murtha. Otherwise none ring a bell.

Do we really go for 1 QB per year though? I mean, is Alipate ever going to see the field? Is Tom Parish the heir apparent to Gray? Then Shortell? I mean, don't we want a 3 year starter for QB?

Sloan El transferred to the College of the Sequoias after red-shirting as a freshman at the U. After one year to College of the Sequoias, he transferred to Emporia State (KS), where he started 23 games over three years. Didn't realize he was playing Indoor Football.

Why didn't we give him a chance here? It's not like Cupito was lighting things up....

If a guy is good enough to be a 3 yr starter, he will be out guys older than him on the depth chart.

If he left after his redshirt season so it seems like we never had the opportunity to give him a chance. Cupito was pretty bad the year he redshirted (2004) so you would think he would have had an opportunity to play in 2005. Who knows what happened though.

I'd rather have Molberg. I don't know why we're wasting our time offering Nelson instead of Molberg because all we're doing is giving Molberg more time to look at other options and so if/when Nelson hops back to cheesehead land Molberg might not be the sure get that he apears to be now. Nelson seems like he'd rather be a cheesehead so let's go for the northern kid who truly wants to play for his state.

I agree, wrap up Molberg now and if Nelson still wants in, there's nothing wrong with taking 2 QBs. I'd rather have one or two, but I sure don't want to miss on both.

Doogie just tweeted:

"Talked w/ Andre McDonald... future #Gophers WR... committed to Kill on Sun. He told Iowa no. He's working hard on P. Nelson (Mankato West)."

Gotta love McDonald's early commitment and actively recruiting Nelson. Who knows if it'll convince Nelson to come here but it certainly can't hurt.

*wild claim alert: McDonald will be either Molberg/Nelsons go to WR in 4 years, after we send Gray AND Shortell to the league.

He's playing for the Steelhawks of the Indoor Football League (IFL) in Pennsylvania. Here's a quote from the press release when they signed him last fall:
http://www.oursportscentral.com/services/releases/?id=4104780

Andre Sloan El, a Philadelphia native and graduate of Roman Catholic High School, brings big time play making ability to the Quarterback position. The 6'3" 205 lb. signal caller is a unique talent because he can hurt opponents with his legs, just as easily as with his arm. Signed out of Roman by the University of Minnesota, Sloan El took his game to Emporia State University for his Junior and Senior seasons where in just two years amassed 4,562 total yards, good for 4th in school history. His 34 career touchdowns also rank him among the top 5 in the ESU record books.

"What you're getting in a player like Andre, is the Michael Vick or Donovan McNabb affect of indoor football," stated Executive Vice President Mike Clark. "He is just as dangerous tucking the ball away and scrambling for big yards as he is airing the ball out. It's not easy game planning for a dual threat like that."

Didn't Quitsy Edwards go to Roman Catholic too? Pipeline!

Yep. Secure the guy that you know for a FACT wants to be here first, because if you give him the cold shoulder long enough, then he may not be quite so amenable to coming here when you finally get around to asking him. You certainly don't want to make the guy feel jilted or spurned, because other schools will be sure to try and take advantage of that to lure him away from us. So you get him first, then after you've got that fella locked in, that would be the time to go after the much more iffy player so far as us actually ever being able to land him, and it would sound like Mr. Nelson to Minnesota would be a highly, highly doubtful proposition at best.

If you look at FSU's 10+ years of finishing in the top 5 I don't believe they ever started an underclassmen at QB. So I'd say no, we don't ever want a 3 year starter at QB.

It makes sense to me to offer Nelson early. WI thinks that Nelson is a lock if they want him, well, Kill is putting pressure on that process. WI is sort of forced to decide pretty quick on Nelson rather than look around for better QBs and decide if they want to offer Nelson. Now, WI sort of is forced to do one of two things....offer Nelson (probably earlier than they'd like) or risk alienating him.

Now, I know it's a similar ordeal with Mollberg, but being that he seems to be a bit less touted, I think we are risking less than WI with Nelson.
