Phil Miller blog: Rickey Foggie on MarQueis/Kill: "I think MarQueis is in a win-win"

Favorite quote from the article:

"Some people have their recruiting coordinator evaluate film. Not me," said Kill, mentioning that Brewster's coordinator, Dan Berezowitz, did initial evaluation of prospects. "I want guys that have coached the game, side-by-side with me, to evaluate personnel. Our quality-control guys evaluate (a recruit's tape), then it goes to the position coach, then it goes to a (defensive or offensive) coordinator, then I visit with them all."

I hope the kids we sign from now on fit the system really well!

Dan Berezowitz certainly didn't have a lot of coaching experience. Not like you have to have been a coach to tell who can play and who cannot, but I can understand Kill's motive to going with his own guys.

Good article. I think everyone is positive and they are trying to pitch in and help out. I think the players should be welcome as part of the extended family - these guys have bled for the maroon gold and it is nice having them on board. Nobody is saying they should be calling any of the shots, but they all know what it's like to play for the Gophers and the challenges they have to face. Many of these guys are coaches or have sons playing football themselves (I wish Marion Barber would have had about another 10 sons!) and it's a good thing to have these guys feel like they are a part of the program in some way.

But can a kid fit into the system the HC wants to play? Berezowitz is being made out as a GM. Brewster's organization looks worse everyday.

I was thinking the same thing. Kill is so much more organized with his system. Basically it is a pyramid.

Sadly, I don't think Brewster was all that organized.

Here's the deal...

College football programs have a limit on how many coaches a team can have. And by coaches, I mean individuals who coach during practice and games. I believe the number is 9 maybe (not entirely sure). Some schools choose to have one of these 9 act as their recruiting coordinator. Some schools opt to have a non-coach serve as their recruiting coordinator (i.e. - Brez). The reasoning for the latter option is you want someone who can dedicate more time to recruiting. Brez's sole job was recruiting.

Now it looks like Kill will have a different system in which a position coach will handle RC responsibilities. It makes sense as he's been at smaller schools where he might not have had the budget to have a non-coach RC. As he gets used to the resources he has here, that may change, but it may not.

The name of the game is efficiency. As long as Big Jer and the Business have an efficient system, it doesn't really matter.
